you want to be on level 4 by elevator or 3 so that you would only have to go up 1 level to pool area.

My second trip to Sierra Mar ( last one in 2012) but this was the best price ever for 11 nights, $738. taxes in ( was $658 a few days earlier )

Flight with Cubana surprisingly on time both in and out.

transfer take just over one hour from the airport and the road has been resurfaced since my last trip.

Hotel is only 25 years old but shows its age, the elevator is now operational, rooms are being renovated but only a few at the time and I did not get or see one. Typical single beds with one thin pillow, air conditioning was very weak in my room but ....

Food was reasonably good with a good choice and varieties, two a la carte but I did not go, comments were good about them though.

Many returned customers, many for more than 20 times, older crowd at this time of year but always could find people to chat with in the lobby.

Employees are excellent and service was great, at the bars , buffet, maids , front desk......

beach is not the best as all the south side of the island, lots of chairs and palapas for shade, a bar is also on the beach, pedal boats...

One pool in the center of the place, anywhere you go you will pass near it , it is the heart of the place, many chairs, water is adequately fresh and employees make sure it is clean.

SCOOTERS were available but after 10 days of requesting one...no
luck for me, seems I was always bypassed or they were broken...very disappointing for me.

Mercedes at the front desk has been there for years and takes care of some issues you may have

Vladimir at the beach snack bar is also a feature at the hotel, very nice man who can give you reliable information.....

Would I return a third time ???? I am sitting on the fence

Any questions, email me , I love talking about Cuba, I have visited most places in my 25+ trips

Just returned from another great two weeks at Sierra Mar. Forget the road the resort is worth the rough ride. Food which has always been good has gotten better, the place is being cleaned up painting and fixing. The elevators although not operational are being worked on. Sunshine every day with temps in the high 20s to 30s. Staff as usual friendly and cooperative cleaning staff busy every day mopping and sweeping. Aways seemed to be 8-12 Cubans staying there but were not any problem. Resort was far from full mainly returnees but some new who mostly were very satisfied (Always a complainer or two) sometimes only about a dozen around the pool. Adofo's retaurant is a great addition and well worth a vist. Make no mistake this is not a five star resort but it is a great 3+ resort and a great bank for your buck.

My trip was to relax in the warmth of southern Cuba and I was not disappointed. The hotel has a very comfortable feel to it. The design is such that you do not see a huge bank of rooms and this lends a much more live-able vibe to this site.
Service was usually very good, but the buffet restaurant could be a bit spotty at times.
Rooms were not fancy but completely serviceable. I had a VIP package and had a stocked room minibar. The mattress was long overdue for replacement and was not comfortable unless I slept in the middle of the king bed, but this may not be an option for a couple - then again?!. I was on the ground floor so the view was limited - if you want to sit on the balcony to see the sunset or the ocean it is best to ask for a 3rd floor room [my bank of rooms had 5 levels, there 3 banks]. If you want direct beach access go for level 1.
The elevator is sometimes breaks down but was back in operation within a couple of hours. For those who need easy access this is very much something to consider. The facilities for the most part are on an elevated "ground" level above 2 of the banks of rooms [ie. above the 5th level of rooms] while the beach is accessed from the bottom room floor.
The food was pretty good for Cuba but not fine dining, with the a la carte restaurants being best for food and service. European wine is available to purchase at the bodega style spot. The bodega was the best of the lot for my taste. The ecological restaurant was closed for renos but is due to reopen in late Feb 2016 I was told.
The "all included" wine offered as usual sucks but is drinkable.
The fellow travelers are from Canada [both languages] and German. The median age is probably 55/60. This is NOT a party hearty crowd and I think would be a slow death for most teenagers. Lots of friends meeting up at the resort or traveling together to Sierra Mar. I met many people who were returning for an 8th time or a 10th time.
Entertainment is much better than expected for an out of the way location. They even put on a good pool show one night which was a first for any Caribbean location I've been to.
Not a lot of excursions available. Santiago is an hour away by cab/bus and is worth visiting for a full day. They are sprucing the city up big time for the upcoming 500th anniversary of its founding next year.
NOTE The hotel does not accept credit cards - better bring enough cash. I did see one ATM in Santiago near Banco Nacionale de Cuba but I don't know if it has limits for Convertible Pesos nor how well it connections to outside countries.
WIFI in lobby is not good. Internet access by PC, also in lobby, is not good either according to reports. Both require payment.

We took our three teenaged boys to the Sierra Mar over the Christmas period, and since we have returned home, they have not stopped talking Spanish. We all really enjoyed our time there. The staff were very friendly and the food was good. The beach was great - it has the natural brown cuban sand and the water was warm and clear. I am a beach lover and only went to the pool once to swim over and haul my husband away from the swim up bar! There is a dive shop at the beach and we all went scuba diving. Good time. For those that wish to just snorkel, there is a reef not too far from shore that you can swim out to. It's beautiful - lots of coral and fish to see. Our only complaint is the rooms. They are very small and simple and need updating, but the view from the rooms make up for them. The maid service was excellent. The place is very laid back and relaxed. If you want white sand beaches, and tons of action, the Sierra Mar is NOT the place to go. It is a little secret tucked away in the Maestra Mountains, and the scenery is like something from the movies. Enjoy your time there! PS. The best surprise for my husband was the fresh squeezed orange juice machine they had set out every morning.

Unfortunately, we do not have rooms on the same level of pool, buffet and a la cart restaurants. There is a building in front of the lobby area that have access to these facilities through a ramp.
