My husband and I (25 & 28) along with another couple went to Cuba for our first time this January. We all LOVED it and are going back! The food was excellent, always new things to try. The beach was beautiful but hot on the feet! Bring sandles! The people are so friendly there on and off the resort. There is nothing to worry about when leaving the resort, the people are all so friendly and always eager to help you out and show you around. If you take a trip into Santiago make sure that you are prepared to be swarmed by people as soon as you get off the bus. They just stand there waiting for the tourists to get off the bus. They ask for soap or the clothes you are wearing and will follow you into the stores asking you to buy stuff for them. That was the only time during my entire stay that I ever felt pressured by the locals.
My husband and our friend took the mopeheads into the town right by the resort and were stopped by a man who was a retired school teacher. He got on the mopehead with my husband and he brought them to the school and showed them around the town. When one of the mopeheads broke down, a bunch of people came to help out, one man went home and got a big bag full of tools and they flipped the bike over and everyone was helping to get it going again.
We brought a suitcase full of stuff to give away down there. Next time, I will bring more adult shoes, sandles and clothes. This is very hard to get in Cuba and very expensive for them to buy.

We went on the mud "bath" run. Please, don't go there expecting an actual mud bath! You get rubbed down with cold smelly mud and then you stand in the sun waiting to dry. Once you are dry you wash off with water comeing out of a pipe in the ground. It's something you should try, but probably wouldn't go again.

The snorkeling is beautiful, you can take a peddleboat out to the reef or just swim from the beach. You will love it! Also, you have to try the Ecological restaurant out. It cost's $5 to eat there and the food is wonderful! The scenery is just beautfil as well. But try to stay away while they are fogging!

The rooms weren't too bad, I have stayed in worse in Toronto. We didn't spend enough time in our rooms to really care. We went there expecting worse because of what we read. It they really wasent that bad. If you are expecting the Hilton though, please spend the extra money and go to the Hilton!

We made some wonderful friends at the resort and can't wait to go back and see them. Next time we are bringing our kids with us!

Yes, it is true that many of the tourists are older but beleive me, after spending all day in the sun, you don't have much energy at the end of the day to stay up late very often!

We met people who had been there anywhere from 5 times to 18 times now and they keep comeing back! I can see why people return! This place is perfect and especially for the price!

The bus ride from the airport to the resort is about 1.5 hrs but very interesting. You get to see alot of the town and see how people live. I really enjoyed our bus ride!

If you are going to Sierra Mar for a relaxing vacation surrounded by wonderful people, good food and good drinks you will love it here. But if you want a party go to Veradero. I hope this helps! E-mail me if you want to know anything else.

We just returned April 9th from a week at Brisas Sierra Mar, in Santiago de Cuba. We read all the reviews about this resort before we booked and it sounded fabulous. Once there we were a little dissapointed. We must admit that the resort is very nice, the weather was great, the beach and scenery spectacular. The food was good comparable to other Cuban resorts. Unfortunately the rooms were something of a dissapointment. We were not expecting the Hilton presidential suites, but we did want water, air conditioning and lighting to work properly. The power went off every day while we were there. One day there was no hot water because of an electrical problem that lasted over 3 hours and no clean towels. The air conditioning was not running properly, we complained to our rep who promptly got on the phone to get someone to look at it, but nothing was done. The rooms were clean, but the beds and sheets could have been a little updated. The sheets had all those little fur balls from too much use, the patio door didn't lock so we were a little scared leaving things in our room. Of course the staff was friendly and helpful when they could but this hotel needs a lot of repairs. When you go on vacation you will run into some problems, but we have been to other hotels in Cuba also of the Brisas chain and they are much better kept up.

We went on our trip from February 17th to the 24th. As soon as we walked out of the airport in Cuba the travel agent was on site greeting us with our room key and info package. This is before we even seen the resort. Was a nice touch.

The bus ride to the resort is about 1.15 hours. Not the best way to start the vacation, but what can you do. The resort is said to be a 4 or 4.5. Ok I have been there and done that. its not a 4.5, however the accommodations are clean, as are the facilities.

The rooms are a nice size, not sure why people say they are small, and clean. I am a clean freak and I found them fine. Don’t expect a Hilton because you will be disappointed.

The Beach is nice, if you like to go diving, or snorkeling its great. For the swimmers try going to the other end of the dock. A nice 5 min walk past the locals and you have a nice sandy beach to swim in.

The Staff don’t expect English to so strong, you can get the point across and they are there to help. The bartenders are great. As far as drinks, I read there are only 7 or 8 types not sure what bar they were at? They have 7 or 8 drinks listed as the most popular for that area. Ask them to make you something and let them surprise you. Lots to drink trust me, try the Horney Monkey yummy!

The Entertainment this is the only thing I found to be a bit off. There was only one show I actually watched it was great, had fire gymnasts and nice dancers and a magician. Little tip, as all the people are watching the show go get some drinks, gives you a chance to get to know the bartenders to.

The Food All the basic needs are there. You will not starve. Great omelets if you can wake up in time to eat them Breakfast is done at 10am. The variety is not great but the food is good. No sore bellies in any way. Water is good to.

The Disco make of it what you will. Most of the people at the resort are older and although there are young couples good luck! The 50-year-old guests were more lively then them. So get up and start your own party.

Overall the surrounding area is great, really relaxing and lots to do if you know how to have fun. I would rate this a 7 out of 10. The only reason it’s a 7 because I have been to a 10 out of ten and that’s is hard to beat.

Great Bang for the buck !

just returned yesterday after 2 weeks again at Sierra Mar, 3 rd trip within a year, same good hotel for not fussy people who just like an inexpensive place to relax and enjoy the scenery of the ocean and the mountains. The hotel upper part was closed as it is only the beginning of the season. I will skip the whole description as it has been discussed many times before. Doctor and Eric the dentist on site everyday, some guests go there to get very inexpensive dental work...
weather was an even 31 degrees and sunny everyday with only one thunderstorm midweek, dry season started, very little wind and hot through the winter if you try to avoid freezing in Varadero...

Rented a scooter for 13 days and travelled vast area around from Siboney to Marea Del Portillo and everything in between.
Even if told not to carry your passport, if you rent a scooter, TAKE IT WITH YOU as I was stopped by the police and given a 50 CUC ticket for not having it with me.

65 km to the city of Santiago, 14 from Cheverico, visite to the cemetery and saw Fidel's grave and the change of the guard, the fortress of Castilla De morro at the mouth of the Santiago bay...just a few ideas of things to do. A taxi to Santiago could run from 60 to 100 CUC round trip if you ask around ...I used the WAWA ( cuban bus) for $ 0.20 to go to Santiago, the return was in the box of a truck in which 200 Cubains and me stood up the whole trip back...about 100 people to many for the room we had but it is god experience...not good for ladies LOL

The hotel finally bought about 8 new bicycles available to ride around to nearby villages. Food is typical 3 star Cuba if you are familiar with it. The hotel was nearly empty with about 60-80 guests but still had nightly shows and live music in the lobby bar until 11. A la carte restaurants were open, the snack bar and the el Rancho beach restaurant. The pool was the cleanest it has been in a while, beach area needs new lounge chairs but again, you will get by. same long time employees remain efficient and pleasant.
rooms well kept by our usual maid.

it seems that security was cranked up this year for some reason but there is nothing to worry about at Sierra Mar.

A few hookers and self designated tour guides still begging on the nearby public beach but would never be allowed on the property so just avoid the area past the beach bar.

a trip to bigrock just on the other side of Santiago is something to see as well, a little road going up for 14 km , view is spectacular and a nice restaurant / hotel at the top, perfect day trip...

For those wondering if it is possible to use the sister hotel Los Galeones in Cheverico the answer is no...it is very small (34 rooms) and even though the guests there can use the Sierra Mar, Los Galeones doesn t have the staff/food to handle more than the guests reiding there. However It is possible to visit the place , just clear it with the front desk at Sierra mar

Just inbox me if you need details, this has become my place after more than 30 trips to Cuba but if you need luxury, this may not be for you.

We just stayed at Brisas Sierra Mar Jan 4 - 11 2017.
We had previously stayed at Brisas in Santa Lucia and Brisas Guardalvaca just as a point of reference. Also just to clarify I have been to Cuba over 30 times and have stayed at the good and the bad. I decided to visit this Brisas for my 60th birthday Now to this review.
We (4 of us) arrived at 11:00 am 4 hours before check-in and surprise everything was ready for us and waiting. The VIP package we booked was exactly as described. The room was ocean view in typical Cuban fashion clean, dated and just fine all around including the stocked fridge with beer, cola, 2 bottles of Rum and 2 bottles of red wine as well as 2 large bottles of water again as described. So far so good.
The resort is kind of laid out backwards as the main section with most of the amenities are on the top floor and most of the rooms are contained on floors below. There are 2 elevators at the section we stayed in and they worked everyday with no problems and very little waiting. Because the resort is built on a mountain it's more vertical than horizontal. Don't misunderstand me there is lots of horizontal room as well but most of the things to do are conveniently located in one prime area and it's very easy to get around.
The views are exceptional nothing but mountains and sea hence the Sierra Mar name. It is well situated with not only beautiful vistas but near by to a small town and a few good restaurants.and beautiful scenery all around.
The beach is very nice but not white sand like many spots in Cuba but the views more than make up for it.
The food in the buffet is ok nothing great but enough choice and more than enough to satisfy most. The 2 a la carte restaurant (international and Cuban) were awesome. Wonderful ambiance and delicious food. The snack bar offered burgers, hot dogs, French fries and sometimes pizza and all were quite good and readily available.
There was music all the time all over the resort and it was a pleasure to see musicians pop up all over the place. The evening shows were entertaining and pretty typical with a bunch of talented kids working very hard to please a bunch of strangers.
However like you will read on may reviews they do have their short comings if you want to look for them ( I wouldn't suggest it). Focus on the positive and you will fall in love with this quaint little resort.
The staff is awesome! As mentioned before I come to Cuba a lot and have come to know the staff is great at all of the resorts but this group of people really stood out. They were kind, helpful, and most importantly incredibly considerate. From the moment we got there until the minute we left these people never stopped trying to please us in every way possible.
Overall I can only urge you to try this resort. There is nothing in particular that is great, there are no simple points I can make to prove what I say BUT for some reason there are all these little pieces of a puzzle that fit perfectly together and enable you to have a great time with some wonderful people proving one of the best trips I've had to Cuba.

Go to Brisas Sierra Mar and experience all it has to offer. Go to Brisas Sierra Mar and fall in love with their staff. Go to Brisas Sierra Mar for some of the best views in Cuba. Regardless of why you go make sure at least once you go to Brisas Sierra Mar.

Thanks to all of you at Brisas Sierra Mar for a truly wonderful vacation and for providing warm and welcoming experience. We will most certainly see you again in the very near future.

GO THERE!

Stayed at Brisas Sierra Mar Nov.12-16. Had to fly to Holguin as the Santiago de Cuba airport was not open yet due to hurricane Sandy. Quite an eye opener journey to Sierra Mar and see all the devastation caused by Sandy. Royal palms and trees looked like they were sheared off, looked like match sticks. Many people lost their homes and roof tops and as we left many still did not have electricity. Cubans did die in the hurricane.
The road is getting better, we do not mind the journey, we love the scenery.
The hotel did not seem to suffer the winds of Sandy like other hotels have. Looked like nothing happened. There were 8 of us that arrived at the hotel. There were less than 20 of us at the hotel other than the workers that stayed for the week that were fixing the electric and telephone poles in the area. Week 2, more people arrived.
The weather was fantastic, no rain. The staff (Every single one of them no matter where they worked) was exceptional as always. That is what makes this area so great, the people. We rented a car for 12 days.
If you have a chance, walk down the hill, turn right and you will see a sign 'Oceano', a great place to eat and have a lot of fun. The menu is fantastic from fresh lobster, fish and chicken. Beer and rum is also available. Extremely reasonably priced (CUC) for the amount and quality of food, while you listen to Cuban music. We had a birthday party there, what a great time!
The elevators at the hotel were being worked on day and evening everyday. Maybe they are working now as I am writing this.
The hotel was freshly painted and very clean. The pool was maintained very well and the hot tub was working.
The food at the hotel was over the top. Excellent! Don't expect to get a steak or American style food...it is Cuba and I think their food is great!
The beach was hit again with the hurricane. The dive shop is open, no damage to the building. The beach bar is being rebuilt. The Rachon is being fixed, not due to the hurricane, but just wear and tear over the years.
The Cuban bands that come to the hotel are excellent, don`t miss them.
Street parties is Chivirico are still happening although the town was hit by the hurricane, many large trees are gone, uprooted. Sidewalks damaged.
Like I said, many of the people lost their roofs or houses. Food is difficult to get for the locals and they are struggling. If you get a chance go off the resort and visit the villages. If you have travelled before, you know what to bring.
Tipping is not required, but we always do. The staff deserve it, from the cook to the waiter (waitress) to the bartender and gardener, and bell boys. They work very hard to make your stay a pleasure.
We are repeaters and have been going to Brisas Sierra Mar twice a year for the past 4 years. First visit was in 2001.
We appreciate this gem in Cuba and we hope you do too when you go there.
You must understand it is not a 24 hour party place like Varadero. It is quiet but you can still have a fun great time. Your holiday or visit is what you make it.

I guess it depends on when you stay at this hotel. We(my boyfriend-23 and myself-22) booked the deal through redtag.ca and left Toronto at the end of August and came back on Sept 5. Very very good weather! Only one small storm, which went away by 1 p.m.
If you enjoy complaining about every little thing then this is not the place for you. If you love beautiful scenery, great people and spending quality time just enjoying the sun then this is definitely the right spot!!
The food was great, yes, of course there was not a great variety, but then again, we are not picky. If you don't enjoy the buffet, then wait till 6 p.m. when the fast food stand opens by the pool bar. They have great junk food! Fries, hot dogs, pizzas...delicious!!!
The hotel is not great. When we got there, it was 1 a.m. and we were dead tired because of the long road, and I started to cry because of the way it looked. I also cried on our last night, because I was leaving, so don't decide that your first impression must be your last one as well!! The sheets were VERY clean, and for the first time in a hotel, I didn't have to use my own pillow. I do suggest you bring extra towels if you are icky about chlorine smell.(from the sheets)
Never booked the a la carte restaurants, as I mentioned earlier, we're not picky about food, but from what I heard the food there was pretty tasty.
About the trips!!
--- I strongly suggest you go on the trip where they show you the Baconao Park, the Prehistoric park, the dolphinarium and take you to Santiago. The dolphin swim was the most amazing part, it's too bad a lot of people missed it because they were scared or were embarassed. Those dolphins feel at touch like a squishy eggplant skin.
--- Also, we on the trip to the waterfall with the horses. I used to compete with horses, so I knew how to handle them(they were temperamental). If you are scared, don't go, they get competitive and might kick you off their backs if you don't know how to handle them. The man who is your guide is very friendly and will tell you pretty interesting stories. If you speak spanish, don't be shy!!! They love to hear outsiders talk to them...and that goes for everybody-even the employees.
--- Another trip you won't want to miss is the scooter rental. If you decide to rent them, be careful, they are very heavy. I rode motorcycles before, and thought they are as sturdy, well turns out they're not,...ate some grass on the way down. Either way, do take them and once you get to the cliffs spend some time admiring the huge waves hitting the cliffs-it's really something, and ever forget your camera!! take it everywhere, almost everywhere you'll look there's a potential shot! Our plan was to go to a school and give the kids some gifts, mostly stuff from the dollar store that they don't have and can't even get. It was unfortunate that it was their first day at school and most kids were let out early, so the schools were empty when we got there. We left everything for the maid.

Our maid was very nice, we always left her something on our bed before leaving. She was very thankful, always leaving flowers or notes. Made our day to see how greatful people can be for things that we take for granted. I also left almost all my clothes there. If you plan on going anywhere in cuba, it's usually a good idea to bring clothes that you don't use with you to give away. They really need them. Also, tip the servers, you tip them everywhere else you go at home, why shouldn't you do it there too, where they do much more work than here?

The swimming pool was dirty on the first day, but after it was cleaned regularly. We rented the paddle boat only once. The currents were very strong, and we were pretty scared to go snorkelling. This girl in our hotel got bitten by something(don't know that?) when she went snorkelling.

Always check your room for creepycrawlings. We had one (small) spider once, simply removed it with paper and threw it over the balcony. Nothing else since then.

The drinks were GREAT! I drank there almost all their coktails, but mostly enjoyed Bucanero-the best beer!!

Check out the pictures and here's the link for my youtube, where you can watch our dolphin swim!

Me and my friend aged 20 went to this resort on april 4-11th. Here are some good and mostly bad things about this resort.

IF YOUR SINGLE AND WANT TO HAVE FUN THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU!!!!!

First of all we flew CUBANA Airlines which was not that bad because we got emergency exit seats both ways. flight was good no bumpy ride, but the bad thing about the flight was the fact that we had to stop in St Lucia (Cuba) for 2 hours but they let us off the plane to enjoy some beers. The food on the plane was the same thing as they served on the way there (ham and cheeze, with no bun)
When we arrived in Santiago it was good we had time to get our luggage and as soon as we did that we were met by the Hola Sun Representive (MARIO) who was a very plesent fellow who always tried his hardest to make your trip as good as possible. THe bus ride is the worst its like a hour long and people were getting motion sickness because of such bumpy roads.

Upon arrival at the hotel Sierra Mar we were met again by the entertainment staff who were singing their house song (mauve la colita).
Check in was fast and the staff at the front desk were actully able to speak and understand english lol. Pouring Rain too.
Rained for 3 days total.

After check in we went to our rooms which were clean and tidy, no bugs, no mess but a lil hot and humid. Alot of people say theres a musty smell in the room but its not as bad as they make it. After the first days you wont even notice it and if your a big wimp then bring some spray. After we checked in i managed to sweet talk one of the maids in getting me a mini fridge which was very handy for keeping your drinks cold well your in the room. We actully recieved a pretty good room the room we got was partial ocean view and partial garden view (400 Level) i think that level is the best because its close to all the activitys and you walk up one set of stairs to get to the main part of the hotel. If you need a telephone in your room make sure you dont get level 100-200 i heard there is no phone service in thoes rooms. Rooms 7-10 only cuz they are small

As for the beach well not much to say about that the beach is not white powder sand like the rest of cuba it is more like a brown type of sand which i had no problem with. The beach was always clean and always had a guy walking around picking up leaves with a stick. There was not many beach activitys at this resort or any beach partys like at most other resorts.
Over all beach a 6-10

As for the staff off god where do i start... Well for the reception, maid staff they were very friendly for the Bartenders the service was VERY poor. ALL but 2 bartenders had very poor attitudes to the point where you would be at the bar and they would not even look at you to ask if you wanted a drink. If you tiped them you got service. One night i got fed up with the poor service and just went behind the bar and made my own drinks for the night. They really did not care as long as they did not have to do any work.
The 2 Bartenders i think have great attitudes and made most of my trip i would have to say was ANNA and ADITA. Allways nice and everytime they saw me they came from behind the bar and gave me a big hug. As for the netertainment staff they were ok always said hello and were plesent.
Bar Service 2-10
Service in general 4-10

Entertainment was very bad. There was nothing to do durring the day as the only activitys were water arobics and vollyball. They definitly need to get more pool activitys durring the day. Most of my day was just sitting at the pool bar or tanning because of the lack of activitys.
At night there was a disco inside the hotel which was ok i guess, Not anything like a Toronto club or anything. Just one room a few lights and a couple of drunk idiots lol. Good thing is that if you bring your cd to them they will play it.
Entertainment 5-10

As for the Food if your looking to eat the same old crap ever day u got it. The buffet started with the same thing for lunch as dinner started with Rice, pasta, some vegtables then some mystery meat (pork, chicken, beef) lol who knows. BREAD IS WICKED
Service was very slow in the buffet too.
Al le carte dinner sucked also. the steak was like the size of my palm with 4 half scoops of mashed patatos. I wasnt brave enough to try anything else.
Attitudes of the restruant personel was very poor also. I was please with the food at the breakfast, you have to try the omlet its pertty good, Bacon undercooked lol but not bad. Also the snack bar is amazing it is open till 1am and they make the best grilled ham and cheeze.
FOOD 5-10 as i did find some stuff to eat sometimes

Bars... Well bars are always good provided there are drinks....The first two days the selection of drinks were pertty good and as the week went on it got pretty bad. They started running out of Bananas, Lime, tonic water, pineapplejuice, tomato juice, Disco cream (bailys) and some other drinks. Aparently you cant make alot of drinks they have if they dont have lime juice. Everything you ask for they say "No Lime". So your stuck with Cuba Libre (Rum and coke). As i said before Poor Attitudes of the servers.
There were 4 bars in this hotel. Lobby Bar (24hrs) which was always good, Pool Bar with swimup bar i loved that, Beach Bar with the guy with 4 1/2 fingers haha and then theres the RANCO bar on the beach.
Bar.
Bar ill give it a 8-10 NEED BANANAS

If you get a chance go to chivarico is a small lil town but intresting and you can buy run and cigars there. Rum is around $4CUC you can sometimes get it cheaper.

The currency there is Convertible Peso . Ill tell you right now its a rip off and if you bring american money your gonna get screwed. 1st of all they take 18% off the exchange right away if you use american money. The rate is 1.388 for canadian so it sucks. They say its at par with the american $ but its way higher.
Change your money at the airport too, Hotel is fast and good but a lil more maye 5cents more.

Overall Trip was Good only because i made my own trip. I was the party animal of the resort and i did not stop drinking. If your a old couple then this resort is for you but if you want to party go to Varadero or CANCUN party central. JOSE at the front desk is the best guy ever if anyone is going tell him TONY says hi. I would rate this hotel a 3 1/2 star just because of the service other then that the location and the view is amaizing. I am sure i have alot more to say about this resort but i cant remember right now.
Dont forget you need $25CUC pesos to leave the country or you cant leave. Most likely wont return to this resort or santiago at all for that matter considering that there is only 3 resorts in santiago.OVERALL RATING 7-10

But if you have any questions about this resort or you remember me from the resort

We have been visiting this resort several times each year since it opened in December, 1993. Initally it was operated by Delta...however, that's history. Superclubs ran it for a couple of years. It's now Brisas Sierra Mar.
Yes, it is a wonderful place. The scenery is breathtaking. The beach is long, dark sand and somewhat weedy. Good snorkeling and scuba diving. The meals are excellent. In 2003 I broke my foot just hours before departing for Santiago. Upon arrival at the hotel, the Customer Service Representative, Lisete, asked what they could do to make our vacation comfortable. Within hours they provided a wheelchair, a small wooden stool so my leg could be elevated - especially at mealtimes. In addition, they provided a gentleman Attendant, ONEL, to assist me, each day, for 21 days with whatever I required. This SERVICE surpassed all and any expectations. I was extremely well looked after. In fact, if ever one needs to recuperate from an illness there's no better place to be. The Cubans are extremely caring. Over the years, we have become friends with many local people. There are villages nearby and warm, eager Cubans just waiting to encounter tourists.
Email services isn't always available at Sierra Mar. Taxi service is limited and costly. Always a good experience. I encourage anyone who is open for adventure to experience this resort.

I am returning to sierra Mar on April 2nd for the 5th time. I have travelled to a fair amount of places but this is by far my favourite.of the six others going, one is going for her fourth, one her third ,one her second and the others their first..time.

The food is great, the atmosphere wonderful.the employees are excellent and very friendly. I have kept in contact with many throughout the years. I go into chivirico at least once for lunch at one of the worker,s homes and it is really nice.

I find the resort extremely clean, safe and enjoy all aspects of it.

Yordanis,Edita.Ernesto,Suzanne,Lily.Yvette,Carlos,jose,Rolando are the best. They make our visit well worth it.

I highly recommend Sierra Mar and you can,t beat the price. Also we pay extra to fly to toronto just so we can go to Santiago de Cuba.

I misplaced the e-mail address to the resort so if someone has it please submit it Tks.

The main dining room often (not every night) sets out tables outside for the evening meal. About an hour or two before dinner hour you will see them setting up. Ask the attendant to save you a table (a tip is nice to offer) and he'll put out a name tag on a table for you. It's very pleasant taking your meal on this patio.
