We just arrived home from 2 weeks at the Sierra Mar...we had the best time, all the review we read were very accurate. The weather was just great 31 or higher everyday...Sun, fun, and Rum, what more could you ask for...
The staff is incredible, they are kind and very helpful, full of suggests and activities.
There are 3 A La Cartes you can eat at and the food is excellent...out of 14 days we were there 7 times...
The buffet was just as good with different things most nights..but of course the regular items as well.

Between the Lobby, Pool, Beach and restaurants we had no trouble getting drinks and they were well prepared.

The sunsets were amazing everynight and we met for pre-dinner drinks to watch the sun go down..
The night shows were exciting and they enjoy making fun of the cold Canadian winter on comedy night (very funny)
The pool was clean and cool for swimming the beach front is clean as well but the sand is very hot so you do need to have some kind of flip-flops for that reason alone.
The mountains are just to die for, what an amazing view, it is just something you will always remember.

We went on all the excrusions we could with very little payout...but they were all worth the money just to see the city and the locals.
We took items to give to the maids and their families, these people really appreciate your gestures..and shoes for their children are in high demand.
Since the resort is small, only 200 rooms, everything is within walking distance and easy to find..pool table, disco at night, swings for kids, kiddie pool, lots of things to do in the ocean...paddle boats, snorkling, diving and so on...

One suggest is that they do not take any kind of American Mastcards..so please make sure if you are using one it is a visa or a Canadian Mastercard..ex BMO...They do not take any kind of American exchange...no American express.
You can purchase a phone card, or have internet access, but it was really slow.
We did the Mud bath, the hikes, the city tours, rented scooters, used the bikes...they have horse back riding you name it....tennis, basketball, minigolf...(could use some work)
The gardens are beautiful with lots of wildlife to view, tones of chickens and roaster all around...we could have done without the one that was in front of our room at 7am...but hey you can sleep when you are dead....(ha)
The only suggestion I would make is when using blowdryers or curling irons...they have 110 in the bathrooms but if your plug has the one large prong on it, it may not go into the older looking plugs...mine work because both prongs were the same size...so look into that when travelling...!The air condition worked but they like to turn it off during the day when you were not in your room, but that was fine as well.!

I would suggest this resort to any and all people...our group ranged from early 20 to 70 and everyone had lots of fun...
Enjoy!

I just returned today 02/25/2005 from my stay . The best part of my vacation was the flight home. The hotel is disceiving. It appears quaint, quiet and cute when in fact it's none of those. Upon arrival our rooms weren't ready. Which was forgiveable, it happens...but we had to wait 2 hours for our room to be ready which was not quite as easy to forgive.

The food was very blande and quite cold 90% of the time. terrible problem area where you eat as well as throughout the hotel. The buffet area was nice in appearance I will give them that. The hotel appears very beautiful,

The service of the staff (other then the maides) was extremely discouraging. NO ONE speaks English, and they make NO attempt to try. , ". The selection of drinks is slim, maybe 6 or 7 drinks if you're lucky. The service of the bartenders is slow, and if you dont tip them, they will skip over you to someone who has already.

The rooms are very small,. The hotel staff doesnt keep a very good record of who has paid for what,
Costs for phone calls were not accurate whatsoever and no one really knows how they calculate your cost. They had little "shows" each night for entertainment. They were okay. Some nights it was entertaining, other nights most people just went to bed. The hotel itself, floors etc is quite dirty, the curtains were filled with dust, and when we moved them to open our belcony door, it appeared to almost be snowing in the room.

I was trying not to make this into a completely negative review as there were some very nice aspects. The beach was definitely a sight to see. It was breath-taking. The pool area was gorgeous. The excursions available are definitely not worth the money and I do not recommend trying them out. most of the guest where eldarlys not to much of a young crowd.dico very dead. Overall our trip was not what we had at all hoped for and it was very discouraging. I wanted to write a review because I don't want anyone else to go there, without atleast knowing what's behind the scenes. I wish I had known and I would have chosen another hotel.

1) We went from Holguin (240 km from the hotel) and it took us 3.5 hours on a van (my family were the only travelers from Montreal). Between Santiago and the hotel (72 km stretch) the road consisted of potholes and it was a rather scary drive after the sunset and in rain.
2) The hotel itself was fine but decaying. There were about 20 Canadians for the place ready to accommodate 300 visitors plus 50+ Cubans who came for the weekends. Because there were not many people, they turned the buffet into a restaurant for all evening serving pretty good fish and shrimp kebab. We did not ask for deposit box key (cost $2 per day) and it was OK with electronics left in the room. They put the third bed in the room for our daughter.
3) The lower 4 floors were unoccupied and made the impression of hotel from the movie "The Shining". Beach has almost vanished at the hotel's waterfront but to the west there is gorgeous sandy seashore about 4 km long.
4) The place is good for mountain hiking but a local guide would be handy. I recommend hiring Luli from the local village Playa Blanca, located at the foot of the hill hosting the communication tower visible from the hotel to the west, when he is available (he works as a sport instructor at a local school from 8 to 12). Ask Mercedes at the front desk to get in touch with him as she lives in the same village.

Just an update on the road. I just got back from Brisas and was happy to see the road in a really good condition. Well they are almost at Brisas now. The last few kilometers are really bad, but yes they are working on it. Having said that, the road to Chivorico is the worst I have ever seen!
It was very quiet there in October but we still had a good time. Do bring mosquito spray, especially if on the beach and at nite. It was hot and sunny everyday.
Was on the day trip to Santiago, was disappointed with the overall trip. The fort was great, but my elderly father got attacked by cigar vendors on the road to the fort. I know it is skinny cow season in Cuba right now but this was to much. They were very aggressive with him. I tried to tell them politely that we were not interested but got told that they were not talking to me!
Also please do not give the people on the beach any information about yourself, they will now call your hotel room to tell you to come to the beach with your clothes. I'm very sad to say that it seems the security is in on this business, how else would they get your room number?
We will still return, but we have stopped going to the beach everyday.

Me and my boyfriend went to Sierra Mar April 6th-13th i believe? of 2005 .. On our plane ride over we quickly met some loud, awesome and totally great scuba divers.. and were quickly adopted as children by a very regular visitor of the resort. The bus ride was long and as a diabetic I was glad I brought snacks. THIS is important for people with Children..or diabetics or just everyone bring a granola bar or something. My boyfriend at the time who had never gone on a plane or really outside of Canada was excited but nervous about the trip. We had a room at the top of the stairs which were rough if you've been drinking, if it's been raining (which sadly happened one day) or if you're just an accident prone person like myself. The room was fine, nothing special but nothing to complain about except the fact that I couldn't work the toilet which became mildly funny between me and my boyfriend. He could however so I believe it was just my own "stupidity." And finally after about 3 days I learned how. NEVER EVER drink the green i think it was called the Sierra Mar drink oh man at the disco with the other university students and young teens those drinks got passed off to each other quicker than you'd believe. Mohitos became a quick love of my boyfriend.. that's why we broke up he found Mohitos more exciting than I could ever live up to .. hahaha. I think this resort out of the 3 resorts I've been to in Cuba had the nicest bar-staff, overall staff and the best atmosphere in that respect. The trip was awesome we went on the excursion to Santiago where you can do sight-seeing, shopping and if you're lucky make friends with some very interesting and fun people. We also were lucky enough to meet our adoptive father who evidently introduced us to an amazing family; a doctor and his wife a dentist. They taught us some interesting things about Cuba, communism, socialism, Castro and the school system. It was so nice to meet such genuinely nice locals it really added to the trip. We never ventured out to those rockin' parties that you can get like 5 dollar bottles of rum at.. which i feel may have been perhaps a mistake. The food is meh but .. if you wake up early enough on your first day get down early to sign up for the special dinners. Overall I think it was a good trip for us. We spent most days hanging out at the pool or on the beach and I think taking my boyfriend to Santiago was good for him to see different cultures and something different. My personally favourite part of the excursion were the land crabs; the one popped the tire of the van and we had to wait on the side of the road for the driver to change the tire.. impressively enough it added to the trip because we got to take pictures of the mountains, of those crazy land crabs which are awesome and of some goats. We saw a kid riding a bike with a pig strapped to the back I felt bad for the pig but the kids loved us because one of the girls on the trip brought bubble gum and candy is an awesome treat to bring with you to give to the local kids. We left behind sandals and clothing, pens, shampoo etc. everything is appreciated because they are on rations.. they get one tube of toothpaste for a family of four for 2 months i believe? The dentist told me this she was very concerned about it. Anyways please go.. don't stay on the resort.. explore.. have fun make friends with the other travellers.. that was awesome :) Mainly don't go if you want a perfect white beach.. it is brown sand but it is absolutely gorgeous none-the-less .. it is one of the few resorts in Cuba located in the mountains which are a must-see! :) enjoy, relax and drink a few mohitos! :)

you want to be on level 4 by elevator or 3 so that you would only have to go up 1 level to pool area.
