Travelled March 26th for one week
First time to this area and resort, however like many others, I have been to different parts of Cuba 30 times if not more. I was looking for a peaceful vacation and earlier reviews on this site were pretty much accurate with the exception of the one related to smoking. This was a non issue.
What made this location/hotel exceptional over others...
-the wrist bands and your room keys were assigned while getting on the bus at the airport. On arriving at the hotel bell boys were waiting to take the luggage - this was the fastest check in ever
- the views if nothing else, made this hotel a must see
- the staff really made a point to make you feel welcome especially the entertainment staff, the lady who cleaned the room and the man who fixed the door to our room which never stayed locked due to the humidity
-cappuccinos were great
-paid a little extra and ordered the lobster at the a la carte - I must say it was the best in Cuba and worth noting here
-the musical entertainment in the lobby was frequent and very good
- the area seemed to have more of a tropical feel then other parts of Cuba
On the negative side and this is a stretch given there was little for me to complain about
- the orientation meeting indicated that tipping was not included in the package. I would prefer paying extra for tips upfront as exchanging money at the hotel was not the greatest let alone getting small denominations and having to carry it around
-for me I prefer the clear turquoise water and white sandy beach although I did know going in that this was not the case here
-although the elevation made for great views taking elevators to the beach didn't give me that feeling of being right on the beach especially in the evening when it seemed far removed
- leaving the hotel was a bit chaotic as everyone seemed to leave at once which resulted in the small airport having that same chaotic experience. The $25 vip service was well worth the price at this airport
Lastly, this is a great resort, great location, met some wonderful fellow tourists. Yes I will go back and yes I will recommend this resort to my friends

I have seen a decline in Cuban hotels in recent years with the increase in the level of prostitution or sex tourism that I have seen (I speak Spanish and French). There are two sides to this resort..the tourist stuff and a very seedy side in which some tourists shamefully exploit the locals.

Santiago de Cuba is fantastic for its music and some of the best I have ever heard in Cuba have been here. The talent is incredible.

The scuba diving was very good but beware...I got poisoned here because the air intake was not pristine. Just watch when your tanks are filled.

The ecological restaurant was a gem and well worth eating at. It is very peaceful and relaxing.

This is a resort in decline in many ways. It is a large scale, old style resort that tries to be all things to all people...rather than focusing on one thing. As a result, the food is bland and the entertainment lack luster. It simply tries to hard.

I would make it into an ecological resort and focus on eco tourism. Although there was diving, the reefs are also in decline.

The rooms are standard but it is a long walk to the beach. If you have mobility problems ask for a room that is on ground level.

In many aspects this is a very typical Cuban resort, meaning that:
sometimes there are no tomatoes, sometimes there are power failures, sometimes things don't work, sometimes the shower is cold, sometimes the elevators fail, sometimes the ac is down, sometimes the orange juice runs out, sometimes the entertainment is cancelled, sometimes the bikes break down, internet is slow, international phone calls are a pain, limited resources, but most people are helpful and friendly, it's safe, there is excellent live music, no strip malls, it's cheap,...that's Cuba.

However, there are several things which are special and stand out in Brisas Sierra Mar:
The surroundings are stunning - beach, mountains, and cute small villages with many opportunities for nice hikes, walks and great snorkeling. The beach is 4km long and beautiful to walk on with great sunsets. A few locals sometimes follow you a bit on the stretch which is not directly on the hotel front. (On the hotel front they are not allowed access).
The road is indeed bad, but quite typical for small roads in Cuba and takes 2 hrs to Santiago.
High median age of guests, which makes it more of a quiet place and less a party destination and requires decent mobility (many stairs).
For Cuba the food is above average and hygienic.
Some kids might get bored, since there are not many extra activities geared to kids except for a caregiver during the day. (Our 4-year old enjoyed her stay).
Great views from most rooms.
Brown beach (this is not for everyone). A little further in the water the water floor is not great for walking or standing, since there are some urchins. For swimming its fine.

I just returned from Brisas Sierra Mar on November 1, 2007. Just prior to departure, I was told that I was being moved to this resort as an "upgrade" from the resort I had booked (CA Los Corales) as the Los Corales was closed. The positive of the hotel is that it is in the most beautiful and relaxing atmosphere anyone could ask for. This helped with letting some of the other stuff slide. I was mostly put off by the fact that basically nothing advertised as being offered by this resort was actually available (only one a la carte restaurant was open all week, no disco, no internet/computer, no water activities, no bicycles, no nature walk as advertised, the pool tables were there but there were no balls/cues since the activities shop was closed). It made for a long week. Our dolphin excursion was cancelled time after time (and the rep never let us know in advance). We wanted to rent scooters, go for the nature walk, ride the bikes, play tennis, but since the "workers' bus" never seemed to arrive, these things were never available. I know we were there during a period of bad weather which likely is the reason for this, but we found that any questions that were asked were either responded to by telling you what you wanted to hear (whether that was actually true or not) or by simply evading the question. We did do the 2 hour horseback ride to the waterfall. We had a great time doing that. The horses were well fed and round in appearance (although mine bucked me off before I got on which threw me off a little). The rooms are in need of some TLC. They would have been acceptable had we not had to spend so much time in them as a result of the weather. When the weather was bad, the doors didn't seal and rattled and the wind and rain whistled through keeping me up at night a little worried for our safety. The floors are very dangerous when they are wet, but the staff are immediately sweeping as soon as it rains. Rain and tiles are never a good combination I guess. The elevators worked fine while we were there so there was no issue of having to always use the stairs. The bars/restaurants operated on Cuban time, meaning that if it was slated to open at 11 they might tell you they were out of beer/food until 11:45 just because they weren't ready to operate. And yes, I was eaten alive by the bugs. we were told this was because of the recent weather in the area. I am not sure after reading all of the reviews whether that is actually the case but regardless, there are bugs so bring spray and after bite. The staff were pleasant and many spoke very good english. The other thing I didn't like was being cornered by the female entertainment staff at night begging for specific items of clothing. They certainly spent the day looking at what was being worn and then later cornered you and asked for it. We had brought certain things to be given away, mostly items for children. That isn't what they wanted. They specifically asked for items by name brand and colour. It put me off leaving anything for them. I also was unsure as to what was going on when the locals were there for the weekend. Some of them were very strange indeed although I didn't have any contact with them.
All in all, we didn't get the services advertised, but we weren't at work and we did get to relax for a week, so I can't say it was horrible - it was just less than expected. Would I return, probably not but maybe during a different season (not low season) when more of the offered amenities are available. As I said to start, it was absolutely beautiful in appearance and that has to count for something.

Arrived 2am to drinks and friendly porters - never had to carry anything after checking in at Toronto.
Breakfasts are wonderful, The chef will cook you an omelette of perfection. The view of lush green mountains is a perfect compliment to the delicious coffee. Take a taxi into Chivirico, the local town and shop and talk with the locals. Six loaves of bread(to give away) cost 1.28 Canadian. Poverty is everywhere bur acceptance and friendliness make this the best country I have ever visited. Take lots of giveaways, shoes, shirts, vitamins, pencils with erasers. Dinky toys are a hit. Children have very little in the way of toys and everyone loves candy.
The hotel has safe pool for children, beaches are clean and well taken care of with nice chairs and beach bar.You can use paddle boats or bicycles free and you can rent mopeds. You can eat almost 24 hrs a day with real hamburgers and papa fritas(french fries) or grilled cheese in the snack bar beside the pool bar. No rowdy behaviour just people enjoying the hot tub, the swim up bar and volleyball in the pool.
Entertainment team first rate with excellent dance shows and visiting bands(bring stockings for the dancers(pantyhose- black & sheer size medium and tall)
Most people understand some English and you will have no difficulty communicating. Rooms are adequate and there are 4 restaurants to choose from for dinner. We
enjoyed the buffet and the inventiveness of the chefs in creating salads. Lots to do - tours, city of Santiago, mud baths, horseback riding is a steal at $5.50 Canadian an hour with guide!!
Great time for single couple or family. You'll come back again.

there is an small disco on the main lobby floor that will play recorded music dance songs until 2:00am and the lobby bar is open 24hr right beside the dicso that is a great meeting place for everyone. The wrist bands are given out at the airport as you go on the bus to the Brisas. The trip to resort is not bad about 1hr.plus. The brisas is very safe and did not hear of anyone getting robbed. The resort story at the time I said there was that someone left their cam on a table at the pool bar and it was taken and then someone tried to sell it.
