Magnificent – that is how I’d describe Now Sapphire. Above my expectations – and they were high.
Twenty members of our family just enjoyed the NOW Sapphire resort, arriving on Sunday, June 9, departing June 16. The weather was very hot – but we are the ones to blame for that – as this was the only time we could all get together as a family.
The hotel was above and beyond our hopes and dreams. The beauty of the pools (fresh water not salt), bridges (that also provided welcome shade in the main pool), the open air lounge areas, the beach – all were magnificent, clean and well maintained.
Some of the reviews we had read on here really had me nervous about taking our entire family to this resort. Our worries were completely unfounded and those of you who have not had a good time at this resort or found problems – I just can’t imagine what you must want. I travel a lot. And have stayed at many resorts and hotels and this is above and beyond all.
The staff were exceptional. We felt like they soon knew us and treated us like family – calling many of us by name. One of our older family members even had a waiter come up to her in town, recognize her and coo over her – which made her feel quite special.
The entertainment staff were wonderful – throughout the day they had energy happening in the pool area – and went around and invited everyone to join in as well as letting you know what would be happening in the evening. We loved Marion, Freddie and Juan – who went above and beyond to make our family welcomed and pampered.
Our granddaughter went scuba diving for the first time while in Cancun and had a video provided to her. Since we had family members from five states – we knew most wouldn’t have the opportunity to see it – so Freddie coordinated us to be able to use the TV system in the Eclipse one afternoon so we could view her underwater experience.
In March my husband and I vacationed Barcelo in Los Cabos and often said if this place (Sapphire) would be half as nice, we would be thrilled. We can pleasantly report that we do feel that the quality of the Now Sapphire was much nicer – we loved the pools (warm at Now Sapphire – freezing at Barcelo), and the ONLY thing in comparison that was better at Barcelo was their professional evening entertainment. Now Sapphire lacked that higher standard of evening entertainment.
The Now Sapphire entertainment staff did a fine job of getting resort vacationers involved in the evening karaoke, marriage game and other evening activities. We had a few “stars” in those events and that made it fun for all of us.
As for our rooms. We had requested ground floors for two of our eight rooms, and ended up with a couple additional ground floor rooms. (That was fine for us). There are no elevators at this resort – which means if you don’t or can’t do stairs well – be sure to request ground floor. The rooms were serviced at least twice a day for complete make up (bed and replenishing towels), and at least one additional time for water and room fridge beverages. The little bottles of liquor that were in the room upon arrival were never replenished – but there was plenty of drinks available out of the room – and we never wanted for anything. 24-hour room service was available, and was exactly delivered at the time promised when ordering and tray pick up was pretty quick (because the equanas and cats would make short order of tray ruminants).
We had “preferred upgrade” for two of our rooms. This allowed needed internet access for one of our family members to still take tests and do classroom work, as she is in college. We learned that the Preferred access to the Lounge had Bud and Bud Light, which some of our guys prefer over the Corona and Model (or something like that). The preferred lounge was air conditioned – and a nice place to go to check your email or print your boarding passes. We also utilized the computer in there to pull together all of our families photos onto one flash drive – so that they could all be uploaded when we got home to all family members. Ivon in this area was very snippy – and one morning, when he didn’t receive a tip he anticipated the night before (because one of the family members didn’t get back there to give him evening tip), the next morning he mentioned it. Seriously. Guess that backfired on him – as that meant no more tips for him, period.
Tips were supposed to be included – but we felt that some of our servers and service were quite great and rewarded them – which seemed to be quite welcomed, but not expected by most. Some of the hotel guests were quite obnoxious with the way they would splash their money and stick it up on the posts at the swim up bar to get attention to themselves. Most of the bartenders at the swim up bar or others were very good about keeping track of who should be next to be served.
Carlos in the round bar in the lounge area (where there are lots of couches and chairs and a great place to meet up with friends during the day or evening) was a fabulous attentive bartender. Thank-you Carlos for all you did for our family to make our stay so enjoyable.
As for Preferred status – it did get you air conditioned restaurant seating, If you chose to use these restaurants. That said – we felt that the Market Place (buffet) and Blue Water Grill became the two places we used most. Seating at the specialty restaurants for large groups is impossible – and even breaking our large group up into 6 or 8, still found very long waits. There are no reservations or assigned seating times. I think if you were a couple or four in a group you probably wouldn’t have too long of a wait – and if you did – it just makes more time for “happy hour”. Alejandro in the Blue Water Grill became our waiter of choice – the man is amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had a waiter that was as good – anywhere!
The food was okay. Nothing spectacular. The buffet was nice. Omelets and eggs made to order, the hibachi night in Market Place was very nice, I wasn't thrilled with Mexican food offerings (but then again, we aren't Mexican - but I do like Taco Bell haha), hardly any vegetables - but LOTS of wonderful fruit. Delicious orange juice in the mornings, and GREAT coffee in the mornings.
We liked their rendition of Shrimp Cocktail in Blue Water Grill - which was more of a shrimp soup - lots of nice deveined shrimp, in a bowl served with something like a tomato cilantro salsa. Very interesting. We also found that the quesadillas and club sandwiches were enjoyed and quickly served. Pork chop on the evening meal seemed to be all of our selected favorite. Real "chunky" mashed potatoes and fresh broccoli and asparagus were nicely done.
The Preferred pool also became a hide-a-way oasis in the middle of the night a couple time when it was just too hot to function (especially the night we came back from 120 degree day at chichen itza.) The white clothed guards kept an eye on things and I think since they knew we were just getting cooled off and talking, and not antics, they really just let us all enjoy the water and conversation). (Thank-you!!)
Kudos to the pastry chef(s) at this resort -- the desserts everywhere were fun and delicious. The cream puff swans, to the layer mini cakes, the crystallized candies and chocolate curls adorning each morsel – you could tell they enjoyed their job and did it well.
The main pool was incredible. I loved that there were steps to go in and out of the pool area in several places – in both the main and preferred pools. The water was warm – and the swim up bar was great. (The only waitstaff that I did not find to be attentive at this entire resort was Angel – whom in my opinion, needs to be removed.)
A delightful surprise was the kayak that paddled through the pool one afternoon loaded with fruit on a stick for those in the pool to swim up to and enjoy. What fun – and this made for great pictures.
The morning coffee throughout the resort restaurants was great. So many times, on cruise ships or resorts, the coffee is very strong. I heard several people mentioning how pleased they were with the coffee. However, in the afternoon or evening, coffee in these same restaurants made you fresh coffee – but used the espresso machine to do so – (I asked to find out why the difference). After trying twice in evening and afternoon to get a good cup of coffee, I gave up in the restaurants. However, I quickly learned that CoCo Café off the lobby had wonderful coffee all the time (as well as frozen coffee and other coffee drinks) and desserts/pastries. (Free, of course). This became a favorite place for my husband to get a cookie or two and in the mornings when the family went on excursions – you could grab a cup to go and a danish – it was open early.
One of our family couples celebrated their anniversary – and were greeted with “anniversary banners” on their door and a bottle of Champagne and fruit in their rooms. Another who celebrated a birthday had the same treatment. This was a nice touch that we were unaware of prior to going.
There were several weddings at the resort while we were there. The resort seemed to do a very nice job, making those events special for those involved and their families.
The flooring throughout the facility is marble. This can become quite slippery when wet – thus in our bathroom, we used extra towels on the floor – which were plentiful.
The bathrooms tub/shower were pretty to look at – but the first time you went to try to get in – you realized you either needed to be quite limber, in good shape and tall. We were glad to find several handle bars to grip when getting in and out. The hotel quickly changed one of our rooms to a handicapped room, when it was realized that this tub would be impossible to use for one of the family members.
The Mexican evening was fun – and the finger painter that was set up in the lobby mesmerized many, as he did magic with paint on glass – and then offered the beautiful landscapes or Chichen Itza – and then sold them for only $20, packaged in a protective case to keep them from smearing to get them home. This had to be one of the best “souvenirs”.
Also for sale in the lobby, all the time, was a cigar stand. The guys enjoyed trying the selection. I was surprised that smoking seemed to be everywhere – but there were ashtrays available for those that did partake – and the permanent ashtrays around the resort were quickly cleaned, and the seashell logo restamped in the sand. I was pleased with the cleanliness and attentiveness of the staff to pick up stray glasses and discarded items quickly and efficiently.
The spa was great. I think I enjoyed the “non-service area” where you could just go between the hot and cold areas, pools, sauna, steam room, etc. even more than the Swedish massage. But it was all great and glad we had the $40 off coupon to use, which brought the service down to just ½ again more than we pay at home for the same massage – but we had the experience and use of the entire facility for the added one hour. (Difference between this and Barcelo resort – was that if you had any spa service scheduled, you could use the pools, sauna and steam room as long as you wanted on the day of service. Although I liked that at Now Sapphire, there was a very nice guy who guided us through the proper procedure – where at Barcelo you just followed the instructions posted on the wall.)
As a final note, we utilized Best Day for our Travel/Contact through our local travel agent – and will have to say that we were disappointed that on two different occasions Best Day misquoted tours and availability. We finally learned not to rely on their service and used other vendors that were on the premises.
For those of you considering a get-a-way definitely look at NOW Sapphire. We were happy and we would happily go back. !
