🌍 ECSP in the News | Last night, ECSP Director Lauren Herzer Risi featured as an expert on a CBS News segment looking at how recent flooding in Brazil is part of a larger trend in climate-induced migration. "When you look back to ten years ago, there were a lot of warning signals, and now those signals are blaring. We need to think about how to change our migration pathways so that people have a viable, safe, and orderly way to escape climate's worst impacts," said Risi. 🗓️ EVENT | Population and Development in the 21st Century Join us on #WorldPopulationDay, Thursday, July 11, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am ET for an online-only event exploring pathways to progress on population and development. 30 years ago, 179 governments came together in Cairo and transformed the global approach to population issues. 🎙️ NEW SECURITY BROADCAST | NATO’s Paul Rushton on the Alliance’s Climate Security Efforts Senior officials from 32 countries will meet in Washington, DC next week for the NATO Summit, with defense, Ukraine, global partnerships, and more on the agenda. Over the past several years, NATO has increasingly recognized that climate change is also reshaping the security landscape and has taken steps to address climate and security together. In today’s episode of New Security Broadcast, Wilson Center Senior Fellow Sherri Goodman speaks with NATO’s Paul Rushton on the Alliance’s efforts to integrate climate security across its core priorities. "There’s no getting around the fact that we’re having to simultaneously confront a changing climate, everywhere we operate, and a more aggressive and assertive Russia that’s determined to undermine the international order," said Rushton, who emphasized the need for new approaches to address linkages between climate exigencies and traditional security threats to NATO countries. 🌈 PRIDE DAY | "Queering Climate Action: A Transformative Task" Happy International Pride Day! Today on #NewSecurityBeat, Emily Dwyer at Edge Effect writes about how we can better engage with LBGTQI+ issues in climate and development work and calls for transformative solutions to address unjust global systems. "A world in which temperature records are set month after month is a world that desperately needs transformative ideas," she writes. "LGBTQI+ organizations and activists increasingly speak of 'queering' systems such as global climate action, global refugee systems, and humanitarian response." Last week, ECSP's Lauren Herzer Risi and Claire Doyle traveled to The Hague for the 3rd International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding at Leiden University. We were thrilled to gather with so many experts from different sectors & regions to hear about their inspiring environmental peacebuilding work and spark new connections. From remarks by Margot Wallström, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Sweden, to a panel chaired by Lauren on a changing Arctic, there was a lot to think on! Although we can't capture all the highlights here, we're sharing some quotes that stood out: 1️⃣ On addressing the environmental impacts of war in Ukraine: "...Seasoned politicians think that to care about nature is a luxury, or that it is an add-on to everything else that is more important, or that we can wait, we can do this later. We cannot do it later—this is about the health and well-being of the Ukrainian people." - Margot Wallström 2️⃣ On the gender-sensitive work of Ripple Effect in rural Africa: "One of the things that we have seen is that women are more vulnerable during climate shocks because they don't have different sources of income (...) So [Ripple Effect] makes sure that they have diversified income sources so that they can be more resilient to climate shock impacts." - sofanit Mesfin 3️⃣ On the cost of climate change: "It's just a matter of either paying now or paying more later. We're already paying costs in the billion-dollar disasters we experience in our societies every year, [like] the heatwave that we have raging across parts of North America right now and that we see in other parts of the world." - Sherri Goodman 4️⃣ On environmental action as a path for peace in Eswatini: "Drought remains one of the most recurrent and pervasive hazards [in Eswatini], impacting the country's environmental and socio-economic stability (...) Addressing environmental challenges can promote sustainable peace by fostering cooperation, addressing the root causes of the conflict, and promoting inclusive development." - Gcebile Ginindza-Matsebula Many thanks to Carl Bruch and all those who worked tirelessly to put on the conference! #EnPAx2024 #EnvironmentalPeacebuilding Pictured: Keynote address by Margot Wallström; Session on "African Leadership on Environmental Peacebuilding;" Keynote address by Sherri Goodman; Session on "Nature-Based Solutions for Peace and Security"

📣 New Report | "Planet on the move: Reimagining conservation at the intersection of migration, environmental change, and conflict" ECSP's Lauren Herzer Risi contributed to a new IUCN report that analyzes how conflict, changes in our environment and climate, and other forces are shaping migration on our planet from a conservation perspective. The report was launched at #EnPAx2024 in The Hague and was discussed in a dedicated session featuring Lauren alongside Richard Matthew, Galeo Saintz, Elaine (Lan Yin) Hsiao, and Janet Edmond. "This report finds that there is an important role in the conservation community in thinking through how we approach the interlinked problems of global environmental change, displacement and migration of species, and the increasing intensity of conflict." - Richard Matthew Read the full report here ⬇️ https://buff.ly/3xq6ths #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalPeacebuilding #Conservation

🌎 It's World Refugee Day! This year's theme is "For a World Where Refugees Are Welcomed," highlighting the need for global solidarity in welcoming refugees and addressing the drivers of displacement, whether that be conflict, disasters, economic factors, or climate change. ECSP is highlighting countries that are experiencing climate-related displacement: 1️⃣ In Bangladesh, 1 in every 7 Bangladeshis could be displaced by 2050 from climate-related factors, and the country could lose up to 11% of its land mostly along its populated delta, according to the IOM. https://buff.ly/4ca94LJ 2️⃣ Across more than 7,000 islands in the Philippines, approximately 8.6 million people will be directly affected by rising sea levels in the next three decades. https://buff.ly/3xuJ12H 3️⃣ Haiti ranks 3rd in the climate risk index. In 2020, 13,000 people were displaced due to hurricanes Isaias and Laura, and in 2021, 220,000 people were displaced by natural disasters. https://buff.ly/4euDJou.
