🎙️ NEW SECURITY BROADCAST | NATO’s Paul Rushton on the Alliance’s Climate Security Efforts Senior officials from 32 countries will meet in Washington, DC next week for the NATO Summit, with defense, Ukraine, global partnerships, and more on the agenda. Over the past several years, NATO has increasingly recognized that climate change is also reshaping the security landscape and has taken steps to address climate and security together. In today’s episode of New Security Broadcast, Wilson Center Senior Fellow Sherri Goodman speaks with NATO’s Paul Rushton on the Alliance’s efforts to integrate climate security across its core priorities. "There’s no getting around the fact that we’re having to simultaneously confront a changing climate, everywhere we operate, and a more aggressive and assertive Russia that’s determined to undermine the international order," said Rushton, who emphasized the need for new approaches to address linkages between climate exigencies and traditional security threats to NATO countries. 🌍 "Climate change is a defining challenge of our time, with a profound impact on Allied security" 🌎 ... When climate change is discussed, the impacts on geopolitics and global security often don't stand in the foreground. 📊 Therefore, I found it interesting to see NATO's latest Climate Change and Security Impact Assessment (CCSIA). This analyzes the climate-related risks on NATO’s strategic environment, assets, missions, and resilience. The report follows the Climate Change and Security Action Plan, which was endorsed by NATO leaders at the 2021 Brussels Summit. The plan aims for the organisation to lead in understanding and adapting to climate change's effects on security. Ultimately, by integrating climate considerations, NATO aims to strengthens its security and resilience in a changing world. I am very happy that my strategic inventions as well as my new scientific theory called (New Scientific Theory Of The Earth Natural Suffocation Cycle) can contribute to world peace and stability. In the past few years, I have said many times that the economic, political and environmental security of the world is only possible by destroying the atmospheric lenses in the Arctic Circle. Therefore, in order to achieve these goals and support the future generations of mankind, we need international friendship of all nations and world peace. https://lnkd.in/eU28EPxw https://lnkd.in/eDgXmNAB #NewScientificTheoryOfTheEarthNaturalSuffocationCycle #BehavioralPhysicsofNaturalColloidalParticles #wildfires #netzero #climatechange #CO2 #wildfire #airquality #FBF2024 #geology #geologist #geologyrocks #geophysicist #energytransition #climatescience #earthscience #earthsciences #sciencecommunication #scienceeducation #meteorology #atmosphere #atmospheric #earthscience #earthobservation #physics #geophysics #dataanalytics #scienceexploration #politics #physics #aerosol #atmospher #airpollution #InternationalDayofCombatingSandandDustStorms #Copernicus #climatechangeadaptation #WHO #IPCC #UNClimateChange #NOAA #Cop10 #AirPollution #Air #AirReport #NASA #COP28 #IAEA #EPA #EPA #WMO #ipccreport #globalwarming #climatecrisis #COP26 #temperature #unavoidableopportunity #climateresilience #ActOnClimate #wildfires #oceans #globalwarming #technology #netzero #scenarios #ClimateAction #sciencenews #scienceeducation #sciencecommunication #abpoli #cdnpoli #anthropocene #InternationalDayofCombatingSandandDustStorms #CopernicusAtmosphere #SaharanDust

Today NATO released the 2024 Climate Change and Security Impact Assessment Report. One chapter is fully dedicated to the climate impact of Russia's war in Ukraine: "Military conflict is a significant driver of climate change and environmental damage". An important observation.

NATO has ambitious and far-reaching climate ambitions. In 2021, the Alliance even set the goal of becoming ''the leading international organisation when it comes to understanding and adapting to the impact of climate change on security.'' In an article for NATO Review, Katarina Kertysova highlights key challenges, ranging from the political priorities of member states to potential interoperability problems as a consequence of exploring alternatives to traditional fuels. Interestingly, introducing green military materiel is complex: military equipment takes a long time to develop and can have longer lifespans. If equipment and platforms are in the final design stage today, they may be used until the 2080s. Senior female NATO military leaders gathered for a scenario exercise on climate security led by The Center for Climate and Security. In the session, the new class of the Halifax Peace with Women Fellowship explored how climate change hazards shape security risks in the Balkans. The group selected physical resilience and the information environment as the two most important drivers of future insecurity in the region. Four potential futures for the Balkans were formulated, as visualised in the spectrum below. Read more.. https://lnkd.in/eD_XMxqe 📧 Interested in PSI's work on climate and security? 🌍A whole chapter dedicated to the Ecocide of war in Ukraine. ❓Is defense only territorial governance or should we be aiming for a more holistic view of maintaining livable conditions and maintenance of ecosystem services vital for economic activity as part of defense?
