Reflecting on Resilience and Leadership: The HMS Wager’s Legacy In the annals of maritime history, few stories are as gripping and instructive as the harrowing journey of the HMS Wager. Sent to “annoy and distress the Spaniards” during the War of Jenkins’ Ear, this British warship’s mission was dramatically derailed by a series of misfortunes, culminating in shipwreck, mutiny, and a desperate struggle for survival. The Wager’s ordeal began in 1741, amidst Britain’s conflict with Spain. Tasked with a daring expedition to the South Seas, the crew found themselves stranded on a desolate island off Chile’s coast after their vessel was wrecked. Facing disease, starvation, and internal strife, their situation descended into chaos, marked by a breakdown in command and a mutiny led by those determined to survive against all odds. Very solid points, as always John Ʌ Konrad V. I have one thought though...in the examples you gave you referred to the Catholic Church and the challenges faced during World War II. The word existential was used in relationship to the Sacred College of Cardinals. The same could be applied to the Manhattan Project. I wish I could say that I had the same faith in those that hold these current positions of importance within the service to the people. After the examples I have seen throughout my years of service I am unsure that we have the people in those positions who in the best cases, have the ability to use the decisiveness necessary to fix these issues. Are they truly empowered enough to make these changes? Will the "political-military-industrial complex," be willing to accept/execute these critical choices made by these leaders; or in a worse case scenario, are these leaders even capable of making these decisions? Are they too scared to jeopardize their careers to be truthful and honest and rock the proverbial "boat" to ensure that we have enough "boats" for the future? Unlike intelligence, which is relatively fixed, the capacity for ethical reasoning can develop over time. However, from my observations, as leaders gain experience, they confront increasingly complex issues without significant examination of their ethical reasoning. In the absence of conflict to rigorously test these principles, there's a noticeable deficiency within the peacetime Marine Corps, where professional ethics frequently come under scrutiny. The brief tenure of commanders, often just one to two years with their units, exacerbates the problem. This short timeframe encourages leaders to prioritize immediate successes that enhance their reputation and standing, with the understanding that they are unlikely to face repercussions for any adverse outcomes or long-term damage their decisions may cause.

As part of the White House Pacific Leaders Summit, last week I had the opportunity to visit with Pacific Leaders, SPEC Kerry, and colleagues from foundations and NGOs and the message was clear: 1. Effective management and resourcing capacity building to take care of marine protected areas is mission critical to deliver results for the planet and people. 2. Ensure robust blue food systems. 3. Move quickly on financing mechanisms. 4. Peace is the cornerstone to prosperity. This is a powerful agenda for action and progress in one of the world’s most important places - for planetary health and geopolitics.
