📣 New Report | "Planet on the move: Reimagining conservation at the intersection of migration, environmental change, and conflict" ECSP's Lauren Herzer Risi contributed to a new IUCN report that analyzes how conflict, changes in our environment and climate, and other forces are shaping migration on our planet from a conservation perspective. The report was launched at #EnPAx2024 in The Hague and was discussed in a dedicated session featuring Lauren alongside Richard Matthew, Galeo Saintz, Elaine (Lan Yin) Hsiao, and Janet Edmond. "This report finds that there is an important role in the conservation community in thinking through how we approach the interlinked problems of global environmental change, displacement and migration of species, and the increasing intensity of conflict." - Richard Matthew Read the full report here ⬇️ https://buff.ly/3xq6ths #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalPeacebuilding #Conservation

As #ClimateChange and conflict increase, conservationists need to better consider how they engage with migration and displacement of both human and other species. In their new report, IUCN’s Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP) underscores the need for a paradigm shift in global conservation efforts in the face of growing human and other species migration potentially fuelled by climate change, environmental degradation, and conflict. The World Bank estimates that climate-induced internal migration could impact 216 million people by 2050, led by movements in Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, North Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. In a thought-provoking new report titled "Planet on the Move", IUCN’s Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP) underscores the need for a paradigm shift in global conservation efforts in the face of growing human and other species migration potentially fueled by climate change, environmental degradation, and conflict. https://lnkd.in/gMz8JyVt

Exploring reforestation as novel approach to environmental preservation: By: Dr. Rulia Akhtar With forests making up almost one-third of the planet’s surface area, they offer a multitude of ecological advantages, such as important contributions to the hydrological process, protecting the soil, mitigating the effects of climate change, and biodiversity preservation. Forests encompass over 30% of the Earth’s total surface, or about 3.9 billion […] http://dlvr.it/T1gG3F

Former Ambassador of Costa Rica in Kenya and Permanent Representative to UN agencies, UNEP and UN Hábitat.
Costa Rica and France are co-chairing the UNITED NATIONS OCEAN CONFERENCE UNOC3. This year Costa Rica organized the High Level event called "Immersed in Change" which took place in San José June 7th and 8th. There were many panels and side-events focusing on the Ocean protection and conservation in line with KMGBF target 3 and the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People which promotes the 30x30 commitment of restoring and protecting 30% of the marine environment and 30% of the terrestrial one. Costa Rica has already achieved both, 52% terrestrial and 30.5% marine so we have committed to 60% terrestrial or forest coverage by 2030. #costarica #nbs #ecosystemrestoration #marineconservation #worldoceansday https://lnkd.in/dgVFRUAq

A great article by Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim telling us something we all know in our hearts already. Kwaxala puts our Indigenous forest partners, who are also our majority owners thanks to our unique ownership structure, at the very centre of everything we are building. Enabling climate funders to very directly and equitably invest in Indigenous protected and regenerated forest areas. #regenerativeeconomics #forestprotection #carbon #forest #naturalcapital #ReFi #Blockchain #Web3 #Sustainability #ClimateAction #RegenerativeFinance #DigitalMRV

🌏 What contemporary conservation opportunities and challenges exist at the nexus of environmental change, migration, and conflict? "Planet on the move: Reimagining conservation at the intersection of migration, environmental change, and conflict" a new IUCN report (co-authored and co-edited by Blum Center's Dr. Matthew) offers a new framework for attending simultaneously to the some of the most complex and interconnected issues of our time. "[The authors'] aspiration is that one day, readers of this report will think of migration as a phenomenon inclusive of all life on Earth, irrespective of whether their mandate is to care for human needs or the needs of other species. The planet is a shared space, species are interdependent, as well as competitive, and recognition of this fundamental reality is critical to reimagining conservation in the context of migration, environmental change and conflict" (p. 6). 📚 Discover new insights in the full report! Attending the Final Intergovernmental Consultations on #Naturebasedsolutions. Plenty of interventions were fronted including the need for indigenous communities and traditional knowledge be incorporated in the standards and criteria of #NbS. Much more deliberations on the definition of NbS vs Ecosystem Based Adaptation #EbA. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (#IUCN) defines NbS as actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural and modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously benefiting humans and nature. #EbA is then defined as the conservation, sustainable management and restoration of ecosystems, such as forests, grasslands, wetlands, mangroves or coral reefs to reduce the harmful impacts of climate hazards including shifting patterns or levels of rainfall, changes in maximum and minimum temperatures, stronger storms, and increasingly variable climatic conditions.
