Thirty years ago, 179 governments participated in the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). They recognized that population issues are deeply intertwined with human rights, gender equity, and the environment. As a result, countries created goals for improving reproductive health, reducing infant, child, and maternal mortality, and achieving universal access to education, especially for girls. On World Population Day, Population Institute joined The Wilson Center for a panel discussion reflecting on 30 years of ICPD and the steps we are taking to realize its goals for reproductive health, gender equity, and a more sustainable future in which no one is left behind. #WorldPopulationDay #WomenandChildren #GirlsEducation #publichealth #populationtrends #reproductiverights #population Kathleen Mogelgaard Nkechi S. Addressing racist and gendered structural violence requires Indigenous-led solutions. As many conservative governments continue to deny the rights of Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ people, we must prioritize Indigenous solutions. Delacroix and Owoo argue why examining the links between population dynamics, reproductive rights, and environmental sustainability is more pertinent than ever and how ICPD30 can center these concerns for the future. While ICPD helped galvanize funding efforts for sexual health and reproductive rights, we continue to fall short of our goals. Mogelgaard and Speidel find U.S. leadership lacking on this front and argue why enhanced funding is vital in advancing global SRHR.
