🌎 It's World Refugee Day! This year's theme is "For a World Where Refugees Are Welcomed," highlighting the need for global solidarity in welcoming refugees and addressing the drivers of displacement, whether that be conflict, disasters, economic factors, or climate change. ECSP is highlighting countries that are experiencing climate-related displacement: 1️⃣ In Bangladesh, 1 in every 7 Bangladeshis could be displaced by 2050 from climate-related factors, and the country could lose up to 11% of its land mostly along its populated delta, according to the IOM. https://buff.ly/4ca94LJ 2️⃣ Across more than 7,000 islands in the Philippines, approximately 8.6 million people will be directly affected by rising sea levels in the next three decades. https://buff.ly/3xuJ12H 3️⃣ Haiti ranks 3rd in the climate risk index. In 2020, 13,000 people were displaced due to hurricanes Isaias and Laura, and in 2021, 220,000 people were displaced by natural disasters. https://buff.ly/4euDJou. 😞😞Climate change is exacerbating refugee migration globally, with devastating consequences. This is a growing crisis currently. Rising temperatures, sea-level rise, and extreme weather events are displacing millions, exacerbating conflicts, and threatening human rights. Some of the facts are: - Climate change is projected to displaces up to 143 million people by 2050 (World Bank) - 70% of refugees come from countries most vulnerable to climate change (UNHCR) - Climate change intensifies resource scarcity, conflict, and social unrest, forcing people to flee - Refugee migration strains local resources, infrastructure, and social cohesion - Women, children, and marginalized communities are disproportionately affected From these, it is obvious that the intersection of climate change and refugee migration demands urgent attention, cooperation, and innovative solutions. We must address the root causes, support climate resilience, and protect the rights and dignity of those displaced. The future of our planet and humanity depends on it. Let all applicable professionals and government agencies work together in mitigating this anomaly. #climatechange #refugee #migration Image source: https://lnkd.in/erf7zBRf

More human beings are forced to migrate today than at any other time in human history. World Refugee Day was created by the United Nations to honour refugees worldwide. Today we want to empathise with refugees around the world, but also draw attention to the future. More than 216 million people across six continents will be on the move within their countries by 2050 in large part due to climate change, according to the World Migration Report 2024. To put this in perspective with more recent numbers, in 2022 it was estimated that there were 35.3 million refugees total in the world. The climate crisis will be the main reason for the number of refugees to increase so drastically. While climate change does not affect wars or politics directly, it does put communities and systems under pressure by making land inhabitable and reducing food security. It is important to understand that this crisis will impact every continent. Climate change demands everyone in our world take action and reduce their emissions. Every year on June 20th is the World Refugee Day. This year’s theme "Our Home," highlights the shared spaces that bring us together, from our dining tables to our collective home, planet Earth. This day emphasizes the critical need for global solidarity and support for displaced individuals. 🌍 #Climaterefugees, also known as environmental refugees, are those displaced by the effects of global warming and natural disasters. As climate crises arises, it forces environmental refugees to flee their homes. The UNHCR's response to this crisis was that by 2030, solutions would be found for increasing numbers of forcibly displaced and stateless people fleeing from climate-fuelled crises and/or living in climate-vulnerable countries. These individuals would be protected and made resilient to the impacts of climate change, and they would be provided with the means to live self-sufficient lives. 💙 Governments, communities, organizations, and individuals must all collaborate to ensure refugees receive the protection, rights, and opportunities they deserve. By fostering inclusive societies and addressing the root causes of displacement, we can build a future where everyone has a safe place to call home. 🏠✨ Reporter: Angelina Sim Information source: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency #GAUC #ClimateAction #ActNow #WorldRefugeeDay #OurHome #WithRefugees

Has anyone used #AI to forecast #climate #disasters and #migration? If so, we need #risk #maps to show probably migration paths, which would be useful for #cities, #insurers, #builders, #emergency workers, and #hospitals.
What about climate refugees? "As our planet warms, we’re experiencing more frequent(1) and severe weather events, rising sea levels, prolonged droughts and altered ecosystems. These environmental shifts directly affect people’s livelihoods by destroying crops and depleting water sources. They make once-inhabitable areas uninhabitable. In response to these challenges, many individuals and communities have no choice but to abandon their homes and seek safety elsewhere. The vast majority will remain within their country borders – it’s predicted that by 2050 up to 86 million Africans(2) will migrate within their own countries due to weather shocks. But some will cross borders, triggering the need for international protection." 1) https://lnkd.in/eEGx9Bvz 2) https://lnkd.in/eY3UtJv2 #climatechange #globalwarming #extremeweather #extremeheat #waterscarcity #humanrights #sustainability #future Read more & #shareyourthoughts https://lnkd.in/eCcRm7fH

Climate refugees: invisible victims in a boiling planet. Today, the Greek Council for Refugees and WWF Greece published the report “Climate Refugees: Addressing climate-induced massive migration before it happens”. In this report, the two Greek organisations hope to stimulate a dialogue on the need for a robust human rights-based system of protection for climate refugees. As global overheating will most probably exceed the climate ‘defense line’ of 1.5oC within 2024, thus significantly increasing the risk of more frequent extreme weather events, the impacts on human communities are reasonably expected to skyrocket. The broader Eastern Mediterranean region is already suffering from relentlessly brutal climate disasters, while it is geographically placed as the gateway of migration to Europe of persons originating from the continents of Africa and Asia. In the midst of this harsh reality, all countries need to proactively set in place proper mechanisms that will ensure the safe and orderly movement of climate refugees. Offering protection to the invisible victims, i.e. the persons displaced from their homelands due to disastrous weather extremes and slow onset climate events, is a fundamental first step towards building a protection and assistance system, so as to proactively address the prospect of climate-induced massive migration before it happens.
