Seven Generations A+E is actively working on a project to perform a series of Mitigation Activities as required by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Our work began in 2019 and was initiated by the construction of the new Oyate Health Center and its impact on the Sioux San Historic District. Next week, Alexander Hokkanen and J. Scott Winchester will be virtually presenting “Historic Preservation on the Oyate Health Center Campus: Rapid City Indian School and Sioux Sanatorium,” hosted via Microsoft Teams on July 19, 2024, at 3pm EST (1pm MT). This presentation will detail the work that went into preserving the history of the site, what our tasks were, the process, and the outcomes of this work. About us
Seven Generations is part of Bodwé Professional Services and Mno-Bmadsen, a wholly owned instrumentality of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. Bodwé Group provides architecture and engineering services, as well as a multitude of federal support services, for clients nationwide. Seven Generations Architecture + Engineering (7GAE) delivers creative solutions inspired by Indigenous traditions, beliefs, and planning. Founded in 2012, Tribally Owned, and an 8(a) business, our core belief is Seven Generation Sustainability, an ecological concept that urges the current generation of humans to live sustainably and work for the benefit of the seventh generation into the future. Our collaborative, interdisciplinary skillsets include research, planning, architecture, and interior design with a relational design approach to sustainable solutions for built environments. We partner with many Tribes on projects ranging from administrative facilities and cultural centers to housing and schools. We also work with many more Tribes through Indian Health Service (IHS), the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). Our work also includes large-scale projects for federal agencies such as the Veterans Health Administration, National Parks Service, and Army Corps of Engineers, as well as small-scale work within the places we live to help build community and create resources. Across our work in the Indigenous, federal, and community sectors, we have a passion for and deep experience with health and wellness planning and design. Learn more at www.7genae.com

Establishing the historical context of this site was an arduous task. Our team traveled to various state and national archives to access materials not yet digitized and interviewed 17 narrators to better understand how generations of people are connected to this land. We invite everyone to read the full story of the Rapid City Mitigation Project here: https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV. #HistoricalPreservation #CulturalHeritage #CommunityImpact #MitigationActivities #SouthDakota #TriballyOwned https://lnkd.in/ghZq5ExM
Generations of Indigenous people in and around Rapid City have connections to the site of the new Oyate Health Center Campus. For some, it was where their grandparents went to school during the Rapid City Indian School era. For others, such as Lakota Elder Bev Warne, it was where her mother took her to visit relatives receiving care at the Sioux San Hospital. The Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering team led by Alexander Hokkanen was able to sit down with Bev and other community knowledge holders to document their histories related to the site as part of the mitigation activities in Rapid City. We are deeply honored to be a part of sharing Bev and other narrators’ stories and carrying their knowledge with us. Check out, “The Journey of the Rapid City Mitigation Project,” on our website and read more about our efforts to piece together the storied past of the Oyate Health Center site. https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV #HistoricalPreservation #CulturalHeritage #CommunityImpact #MitigationActivities #SouthDakota #TriballyOwned

The Rapid City Mitigation Project tasks built upon each other to tell the full story of this site and to connect people back to the Indigenous history of this land. From deeply personal oral histories to national archives and artifacts, we are incredibly honored to carry the knowledge of this history with us. What steps are taken when historic structures are impacted by new construction? For the Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering team that worked on the Oyate Health Center, preserving the history of this site and its ties to the community would become an ongoing effort known as the Rapid City Mitigation Project. Tasked with completing nine activities, the team worked to mitigate the impact of the Oyate Health Center’s construction on a site that was once home to the Rapid City Indian School and the Sioux Sanatorium. The site’s long Indigenous history spans centuries, and the work of our team will ensure this history is available to people today and for future generations. We are excited to share the journey of the Rapid City Mitigation Project and invite you to read the full story on our website: https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV #HistoricalPreservation #CulturalHeritage #CommunityImpact #MitigationActivities #SouthDakota #TriballyOwned

From the Sensory Experience Lounge to the Climate Positive Solutions Gallery, there were so many experiences and events for attendees to take in at this year’s NeoCon. It will be exciting to hear our interiors team’s main takeaways from the keynote sessions as we continue to shape the built environment for our clients nationwide. #Conferences #InteriorDesign #ProfessionalDevelopment #Networking
Earlier this week, a group of our interior designers attended NeoCon, an annual conference that brings the interior design community together for idea-sharing and innovation. The Bodwé interiors group was able to engage with other professionals, learn about new products and technology, and hear from keynote speakers such as Bob Weis, who led a session about “Leveraging the Power of Storytelling in Commercial Design” on Monday. We are eager to have our team members help implement the knowledge they gained at NeoCon into our collective work to create functional, beautiful spaces for our clients. #Conferences #InteriorDesign #ProfessionalDevelopment #Networking

Working across #IndianCountry as a #triballyowned company, we recognize the importance of cultural identity within Indigenous communities. It was an honor to hear Marcus Winchester present at the 7GAE headquarters to share his insights about Pokagon history and culture with our team. It was also exciting to have Julio Martinez talk about the growth across both Bodwé Group and Mno-Bmadsen, and we thank them both for taking the time to share this wealth of knowledge with us. How does Bodwé Group connect back to Mno-Bmadsen and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi? To deepen the Bodwé team’s understanding, we recently held a series of enculturation presentations that shed light on these connections and explored the past, present, and future of the Pokagon Band. Offered in-person and virtually, these sessions were led by two Pokagon citizens, Marcus Winchester, Pokagon Cultural Leader, and Michaelina Martin, Mno-Bmadsen Vice President of Communications, as well as Julio Martinez, Mno-Bmadsen CEO. Marcus and Micky presented the rich history of the Pokagon Band and the Band’s vision for the future, while Julio shared the journey of Mno-Bmadsen and our growth across the Mno investment portfolio. By better understanding our roots and our mission, we are able to contribute more meaningfully to growing the economy and legacy of the Pokagon Band. A big thank you to Marcus, Micky, and Julio for leading these invaluable sessions! If you haven’t yet, we invite you to watch a short overview video about Bodwé and how we work to support future generations of the Pokagon Band: https://lnkd.in/eZVqWVbR #WéCulture #TriballyOwned #CulturalPresentation #TeamBuilding #WhoWeAre #WhatWeDo
