Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering’s Post

As Found I'm attending 'As Found: International colloquium on adaptive reuse' in Hasselt, Belgien. In my presentation, I argue that architecture is not (only) defined by formal concepts, historic narratives or stylistic features, but rather values and meanings are 'coming to presentation' through 'attunement'. Asserting that art and architecture may overcome temporal distance by virtue of its own meaningful presence (Gadamer 2004), I propose that strategies for future sustainable building cultures include reinforcing the experienced values and meanings of the ‘as found’ – balancing minimum material intervention with maximum experiential effect. It’s easy to forget that this was a bold experiment by architect Stefano Boeri and their team. No doubt originally thought of as an expensive pipe dream that would be impossible to maintain. Now, it's one of the most recognised buildings in the world containing as many trees and plant species as one hectare of forest and a biological habitat of 40,000 sqm. This image by Polina Chistyakova for Pexels was taken 5 years after completion. The vertical forest is flourishing and the measures of success in terms of spawning a new way of building and working with nature is profound. Applying this approach to low-cost housing is perhaps the most exciting outcome. How do we encourage more bold experiments to be initiated and supported in our industry?
