This week, we are pleased to share this recognition of a Bodwé team member who has demonstrated one of our seven core values outside the office. Senior Interior Designer Amber Anderson at Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering went out of her way to help her colleagues get clean drinking water during a main water break in Grand Rapids back in March. Read about Amber’s selfless act of Love in the included graphic. Thank you, Amber, for your commitment to the Bodwé Values in support of our mission to grow the economy and legacy of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. One of the final tasks as part of the Rapid City Mitigation Activities at the Oyate Health Center (OHC) is conducting presentations to share this important history with the public. Led by Alexander Hokkanen and J. Scott Winchester, sessions for the Rapid City community were held while work on the OHC was still underway. More recently, Alex and Scott presented at the South Dakota Historical Society’s annual conference. Now, the 7GAE team is days away from holding a virtual presentation that encourages attendance from tribal citizens spread across west-river South Dakota. We invite anyone interested in hearing a more in-depth explanation of our team’s collective work to participate in the presentation this Friday, July 19, at 3pm EST (1pm MT). Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gi5g8E7R Individuals who wish to learn more but can’t make the virtual session can read "The Journey of the Rapid City Mitigation Project” on our website: https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV #HistoricalPreservation #PictorialDisplay #CulturalHeritage #CommunityImpact #MitigationActivities #SouthDakota #TriballyOwned

Part of the work that we across the Bodwé Group always take great pride in is our ability to partner with the communities where we complete projects. To complete our work in a good way across all project types, but especially those involving difficult pasts, we must first make an exceptionally concerted effort to educate ourselves. The work that Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering is currently performing is part of a larger effort to preserve the history of the Sioux Sanatorium and Rapid City Indian School. It was deeply humbling to have been entrusted with the personal and familial recollections of community members to have the opportunity to learn from them. These stories bolstered the archive research we conducted at institutions across the country. We are excited to share our work completed in collaboration with the Rapid City community! Learn more about Friday’s presentation and consider attending: https://lnkd.in/gi5g8E7R #Mitigation #CulturalSustanability #IndianCountry #RapidCityHistory #OralHistory #IndigenousHistory #RapidCity https://lnkd.in/gy4g6tF6
This Friday will mark a milestone in 7GAE’s project work to perform a series of historic preservation tasks per Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act related to constructing the new Oyate Health Center and the associated impact on the Sioux San Historic District. As we prepare to share the findings of this work during Friday’s virtual presentation, we find ourselves reflective and grateful to have been entrusted with the ability to help tell the stories of those whom we interviewed and who assisted us in our research, findings, and compilation of our historic storytelling efforts. Join Alexander Hokkanen and J. Scott Winchester Friday at 3pm EST (1pm MT), as they present the findings and outcomes of this meaningful work: https://lnkd.in/gi5g8E7R #Mitigation #CulturalSustanability #IndianCountry #RapidCityHistory #OralHistory #IndigenousHistory #RapidCity

Thank you to Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering for supporting the Kalamazoo Nature Center as they spotlight Indigenous communities and history, an effort directly aligned with Bodwé’s mission to support the #CulturalSustainability of Tribes and Native persons across the country. Tonight’s lecture is sold out, which illustrates how much interest there is in learning more about traditional Indigenous knowledge and how we can all work together to heal our planet. We can’t wait to hear how the day goes for team members representing 7GAE and Bodwé Group at today’s events! #IndigenousKnowledge #EnvironmentalStewardship #CommunityEvents #Kalamazoo #NatureExhibition https://lnkd.in/gKPV_weJ
7GAE is excited to sponsor two special events from the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC)! Open now through January 5, 2025, "Roots of Wisdom" is KNC’s first large-scale traveling exhibition, which was developed by the Oregon Museum of Sci OMSI. The interactive exhibition shares stories from Indigenous communities and explores how traditional knowledge and Western science can come together to provide solutions to the ecological challenges we face. Additionally, KNC has partnered with the MATCH-E-BE-NASH-SHE-WISH BAND OF POTTAWATOMI INDIANS to create a feature on Mnomen (wild rice), the harvesting process, and its importance in local ecosystems. The second event is a lecture and book signing today with Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of the widely acclaimed book, “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants”. Representatives from the Buildings Services Branch of Bodwé Professional Services Group will join Kimmerer at a luncheon today and later attend her lecture at 6pm in Kalamazoo’s Chenery Auditorium. Our work to blend natural and built environments reflects our commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with the natural world. We are happy to be a sponsor of these two events and encourage members of the Kalamazoo community to visit the Roots of Wisdom exhibition before it ends. As writer Diana Budds points out in her recent article for The Architect's Newspaper, there is a lot of design work happening in communities across Indian Country – but not enough Indigenous architects to do it. With quotes from various Indigenous design professionals, this story brings attention to the challenges Indigenous people face in a Western-influenced industry and how they are leaning into their cultural identity and beliefs to guide them through each design project. We encourage everyone to read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gZ_VN7rn As a #triballyowned family of companies deeply rooted in the world of design, we are always consciously aware of the need for Indigenous architects. Working to support the mission to grow the economy and legacy of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, Bodwé Group proudly participates in Mno-Bmadsen’s Pathways Program, an initiative that empowers tribal youth and adults and provides them with resources to gain meaningful employment. As we continue to push for increased representation of Indigenous people in STEM-related fields, especially within the AEC industry, we invite others to learn more about the Pathways Program by visiting: https://lnkd.in/gvmD6mW5. #AECcareers #CareerExploration #DesignProfessionals #Architecture #Engineering #IndigenousDesign #DiversityinDesign

With historical context gathered, the Seven Generations Architecture & Engineering team working on the Rapid City Mitigation Project activities proposed a new way to share the important background of the Oyate Health Center (OHC) site in Rapid City, SD. They designed, curated, and installed an interactive interpretive display for community members to explore their shared history while accessing care at the OHC. Equipped with touch-enabled monitors and audio capability, the interpretive display brings to life each narrator’s oral history, and the press timeline offers a glimpse into what was happening in and around the Rapid City area throughout history. Learn what challenges the team had to overcome to ensure the installation went up in time by reading “The Journey of the Rapid City Mitigation Project” on our website now: https://lnkd.in/gbnW7tKV. We are also excited to share information about an upcoming virtual presentation by Alexander Hokkanen and J. Scott Winchester, who will detail our team’s collective work on the mitigation activities, including what went into the creation and installation of the interpretive display.
