#PostOfTheWeek In the first of a three-part blog series highlighting DAI’s support for developing carbon markets, Christy Owen talks to Barry Flaming, DAI’s Senior Technical Advisor on Climate, Natural Resources, and Private Sector Engagement, about his work supporting a global investor buy-in program to assess opportunities for developing carbon removal projects. In this context, carbon removal refers to nature-based solutions such as restoring natural ecosystems—forests, wetlands, mangroves, agricultural areas, etc.—to increase carbon stocks in vegetation and soils. This includes projects that might build off USAID landscape investments to help meet private sector partners’ net-zero commitments. By 2027, USAID Nepal seeks to build the capacity of 50 water and sanitation-related institutions, extend access to safely managed sanitation to more than 16,000 people, and improve access to basic water services for 75,500 people. USAID #Karnali Water’s efforts in Naulakot, Pokharikanda, Bijulekh, and beyond, are driving progress in pursuit of those goals: As of late 2023, the activity has strengthened water security in 64 communities throughout the Karnali river basin, reaching more than 12,850 residents with a sustainable, improved drinking water facility at their doorsteps to promote hygienic and healthy lifestyles and prevent communities from deadly water-borne diseases.

The USAID-funded Scaling Up Nutrition Technical Assistance project in Zambia is working with the Zambian government to reduce stunting in children below the age of two years by promoting environmentally friendly household backyard gardens. The project promotes the use of conservation farming methods such as minimum soil tillage, intercropping, and diversification of plant species, as well as the use of organic pesticides. In urban settings like Kabwe in Central province Zambia, where space for backyard gardens is limited, farmers are encouraged to grow vegetables in sacks, this ensures maximized use of available space. They are encouraged to grow nutritious vegetables, like spinach, garden eggs, beans, and carrots, in flowerbeds and pots instead of planting flowers. We are delighted to feature in the latest British Expertise International report on Education with our FCDO-PLANE Nigeria project. #Africa is the focus of many of the case studies in the BEI #EducationReport and we are delighted to have shared these case study's over the past few weeks. These case studies showcased the work delivered by BEI members and local partners across the African content, including in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. Today, we highlight DAI's case study titled 'Partnership for Learning for all in Nigeria (#PLANE), #FCDO,' as the final case study on Africa. DAI is an international development organisation that works with governments, private corporations, philanthropies and civil society organisations to tackle fundamental social and economic development problems. The absence of a quality and standardised data collection system in schools in Nigeria has led to discrepancies and gaps in the information available for analysis and timely decision-making by education authorities. DAI's work on the introduction of the #EducationDashboard has helped to improve the monitoring of School Support Officers' activities, facilitating real-time reporting, streamlined data collection, analysis and dissemination, and thus enabling more informed and timely decision-making and intervention strategies. Stay tuned as we move into new regional areas and highlight the rest of the case studies from our Education Report. Economic growth and urbanization in #Türkiye have led to increased waste generation, creating a pressing need for more efficient waste management systems. To address these issues, Türkiye is transitioning to a circular economy and harmonizing its waste management practices with #EuropeanUnion standards. Together with our local partners, DAI is leading the Türkiye Döngüsel Ekonomi project to establish a national framework for a #circular #economy. Our technical team has already developed the National Circular Economy Strategy and Action Plan, complete with a #roadmap for its implementation. Waste prevention and sorting is one of the six areas that the Strategy will address, aiming to tackle the challenges and gaps in Türkiye’s current #waste and resource management system. We sort our wastes with a dual collection system. In our cities, we support the recycling process by sorting waste correctly with blue and grey containers. By disposing recyclable waste in blue containers and non-recyclable waste in grey containers, we both protect our environment and contribute to the circular economy. Within the scope of the Zero Waste Regulation, there is at least two separate collection systems on the streets and streets for the separate collection of plastic, paper, glass, metal and other wastes in municipal service areas. In addition, waste collection centres are established for the collection of waste batteries, vegetable waste oil, textile waste, waste medicines, waste electrical and electronic equipment and bulky waste, and trainings along with awareness raising activities are carried out at these centres. Let's make our individual contribution for a livable world with circular economy and green development by sorting our waste! 🌱♻️ Çevre Şehircilik ve İklim Değişikliği Bakanlığı Avrupa Birliği Türkiye Delegasyonu IPA Çevre/Environment TÜRKİYE DAI

#PostOfTheWeek Efforts to increase tax revenue can have a profound and positive impact on a country’s ability to deliver quality basic services. When deployed effectively, higher tax revenue can fund infrastructure, healthcare, and educational investments—the pillars of a thriving society. Read how the USAID #ElSalvador Domestic Resource Mobilization (DRM) Activity team managed to mobilize tax revenue equivalent to 2+ percentage points of gross domestic product (GDP)—translating into hundreds of millions of dollars in additional revenue for the country. #Governance #PublicFinance #PublicFinancialManagement #PublicResources
