New Profit, through its Catalyze cohort in Unlocked Futures, will provide $100,000 of one-year unrestricted funding, $10,000 of funding for leadership development, and strategic advisory support to ten innovative nonprofit organizations focused on expanding access and opportunity in America.  The Unlocked Futures cohort will provide funding to organizations led by justice-impacted social entrepreneurs to increase visibility and remove barriers to capital for justice-impacted individuals and communities, including those who have been incarcerated or detained in a prison, immigration detention center, local jail, juvenile detention center, or any other carceral setting, those who have been convicted but not incarcerated, those who have been charged but not convicted, and those who have been arrested (LSAC).

🌍 Good day today for Nature Carbon Markets! 🌍 Today, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce have joined forces to launch the Symbiosis Coalition, an "advance market commitment" for nature-based #carboncredits. This coalition is poised to unlock millions in investment for NCS projects around the globe. 🌱 I'm thrilled to see that the Symbiosis Coalition’s quality standards align closely with Conservation International's Principles for Investment in Natural Climate Solutions. By setting high standards for both nature and people, this initiative underscores the importance of comprehensive approaches to addressing climate change. Carbon projects are not a panacea for solving the climate crisis, but they are a key part of the basket of solutions needed. Similarly, restoration alone will not avert the the dangerous biodiversity crisis which the world is currently facing. I am hopeful that this market signal from Symboisis, which starts with nature restoration, will evolve to eventually include nature protection as well. Stand.earth and 80 leading NGOs urge Science Based Targets initiative to keep the science in SBTi and not sell out to companies looking to short cut reducing their climate pollution. SBTi has been a reputable org helping set real targets so one can only hope this disaster by the CEO (who is now leaving by the end of July) and the SBTi Board will be averted and the SBTi reputation rehabilitated. What is this all about? In the most simple terms here is what SBTi proposed: Let's say you are a fashion brand. You have structured your business so other companies actually make your products in Asia (thus this pollution is Scope 3). But the pollution created is your responsibility and you must work to reduce it with your manufacturers. This is really important bc, for example, many fashion brands have 95-99% of the pollution they create in Scope 3! OR..... under the new SBTi proposal, you could just buy cheap offsets and while they do little to nothing to actually reduce climate pollution, you can now claim you are net zero. Hmmm - that's bad enough. But let's think about how this could be gamed out. What if Amazon, rather than build its own server farms, structures its business so those server farms are run by contractors so Amazon doesn't "own" them. Magically this is now Scope 3 pollution! And it could just be offset cheaply and easily rather than having to run that server farm on renewables in order to be climate neutral. This is a climate crisis - real action, not gaming the system, is what is required. https://lnkd.in/gZKkwhtw

Climate Policy Radar is three! Can still remember when it was a baby, can already imagine it as an adult. We celebrated our birthday last night with our (former, current, growing) team of incredible, smart, committed, and mission-driven humans, and with many of our wonderful friends, allies. And with cupcakes, because everything is better with friends and allies and cupcakes.🎂 As we build and grow CPR as a place that is wonderful to work in (4 day workweek, anyone), and as we build credible, intuitive tools to help people make sense of a lot of data, fast, so they can make better decisions - it's worth reflecting on our mission and on the bigger picture, because alone we can only achieve a fraction of what we can & need to achieve together. We (the world) need lots of Earth data and analytics (Earth observations, emissions data, weather forecasts, socio-economic data, policy data, corporate lobbying data), to enable data-driven decisions (policy, investment, litigation, technological and social innovations..) to tackle our greatest challenges on climate, nature, health, and poverty. The data need to be rock solid - truthful and credible, available for decades, accessible and usable, and enable modelling and building applications and solutions on top of them. They need to avoid all the existing risks to data: being lost or neglected, intentionally hidden (behind paywalls), manipulated, sabotaged, or biased (by design or negligence). They need to be freely available to anyone who needs them - especially those who are disproportionately impacted by climate and nature breakdown, and almost always the least able to pay. In short: Earth analytics need to be governed responsibly, funded long term, and make use of the immense technological capabilities that are already here and getting cheaper and easier to deploy. And crucially, they need to be connected to the demand - to those who need them to make decisions - national & local governments, financial institutions, industry, and civil society. This is a collective effort. We find ourselves at an incredible moment in time - where the demand for Earth data & analytics meets existing (and potential for) supply, with initial signals that philanthropy is willing and able to fund it as a strategic global public good. Climate Policy Radar is already working in collaboration with multiple like minded, bold, creative individuals and organisations to make this vision happen. Happy birthday to us. Climate reporters need tools for investigating offsets. So do reporters who cover local politics, land management, business, and other beats that aren’t always steeped in deep climate knowledge. At CarbonPlan, we developed a tool called OffsetsDB, an open-access platform that makes it easier to find and compare data from five of the largest offset registries – more than 9,000 individual offset projects. On July 9, my colleague Grayson Badgley and I will be leading a webinar hosted by The Journalist's Resource that will walk reporters through the basics of how the offsets industry works and how to use OffsetsDB as a tool to aid your reporting. Research scientist Grayson Badgley and editorial lead Maggie Koerth will answer your questions and help bring some clarity to this increasingly important field.
