By 2027, USAID Nepal seeks to build the capacity of 50 water and sanitation-related institutions, extend access to safely managed sanitation to more than 16,000 people, and improve access to basic water services for 75,500 people.
USAID #Karnali Water’s efforts in Naulakot, Pokharikanda, Bijulekh, and beyond, are driving progress in pursuit of those goals: As of late 2023, the activity has strengthened water security in 64 communities throughout the Karnali river basin, reaching more than 12,850 residents with a sustainable, improved drinking water facility at their doorsteps to promote hygienic and healthy lifestyles and prevent communities from deadly water-borne diseases.

Ethiopia’s vulnerability to climate change requires more modern and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems. But regions across the East African nation have low resilience to climate-related challenges. ⚡
With this in mind, the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) and UKaid, along with the Ethiopian Government, are implementing the initiative “Strengthening Climate Resilience Systems in Water, Sanitation, Hygiene” (SCRS-WaSH). 💙
A part of the Ethiopian Government’s wider One WaSH National Programme, this initiative is addressing the growing climate problems assailing Ethiopia, causing severe droughts and floods and even threatening water security and sanitation. 🍂
With support and expertise from NIRAS and Water Aid, SCRS-WaSH integrates climate-resilient practices into WaSH programmes, improving immediate access to essential services and developing a sustainable system geared towards environmental and social health. 💪🏾🌳
This multifaceted approach includes innovative technologies, strengthened institutional frameworks and active community engagement. By targeting beneficiaries at federal, regional and facility levels across 13 regions, SCRS-WaSH is helping integrate water management and sanitation practices into the daily lives of the nation’s people.
Key objectives of the initiative are:
💧 Fortifying water supply management in 30 rural multi-village schemes;
💧 Integrating climate resilience into existing and new water supply schemes;
💧 Establishing robust post-construction maintenance systems and supply chains for spare parts.
And these efforts do not stop at enhancing water schemes. SCRS-WaSH is also creating jobs, particularly for women- and youth-run micro and small enterprises. Plus, it addresses period poverty in schools through education and resources for menstrual hygiene management. 🩸

The last rainy season demonstrated just how #climatechange has increased the amounts and unpredictability of rainfall. For my neighborhood in Lusaka, that may have been alien. But for most people in Zambia, that has been the recent reality. Climate change-induced flooding has also disrupted infrastructure and water sources, revealing the urgency for resilient sanitation systems. Sadly, a significant portion of the population lacks basic #sanitation facilities, underscoring the need to address inequalities. To combat these challenges, promoting climate-resilient sanitation technologies, collaboration among stakeholders, public awareness campaigns, and integrating climate resilience into programs are key strategies. Ultimately, recognizing the nexus between climate change and sanitation is vital for a healthier, sustainable, and equitable #Zambia. 💧 Water scarcity is a pressing issue in Pakistan, with the country ranking among the most water-stressed in the world. The Indus River, Pakistan’s lifeline, supports agriculture, industry, and livelihoods for millions, yet it faces threats from pollution, over-extraction, and erratic rainfall patterns.
🌱 The agricultural sector, which heavily relies on irrigation, consumes the lion’s share of water resources. Efficient water management practices and sustainable agriculture are crucial for securing food production and ensuring water availability for future generations.
🏞️ Pakistan’s diverse ecosystems, from the mangroves of the Indus Delta to the glaciers of the Karakoram Range, depend on healthy water systems for their survival.
