Lake Harvest, a local company, has integrated small-scale producers and processors to further develop the tilapia value chain. The Zimbabwean government's focus on biodiversity economy aims to unlock the enormous potential value offered by nature. The benefits include increased crop yields, reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers, and a healthier ecosystem. Conservation tillage is another transformative practice. In countries like Kenya, farmers are shifting from traditional plowing to minimal or zero-tillage techniques. This minimizes soil disturbance, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and conserves moisture. The outcome is improved soil health, water retention, and enhanced resilience against drought. Moreover, agroforestry, where trees and crops coexist, is changing the landscape. Despite initiatives like the Alliance Green Revolution(AGRA), malnutrition has increased by 50% in the countries where it has been active. It's time to relook at the industry-scale production approach and encourage Climate Smart Agriculture and sustainable farming practices. Pro-resource farming should not be only limited to markets with high compliance and consumer-led demands; it should also be shared with communities that have inherent wisdom about sustainable co-existence. By marrying innate local knowledge with modern-day insights on sustainable farming, we can make up for lost time on the food security goal for communities in Africa.
