In a small southern Ukrainian town, birds have built nests in the large holes recently made in the walls of an apartment building. The town is Luch. The holes were made from shrapnel. In Spring 2022, the front line passed through the town, and active fighting lasted for months. Today, not a single house survives undamaged.

Women are often the unsung “sheroes” in #conflict, providing meals, shelter and financial help to those in need. They build powerful networks to make their communities safer and healthier. #Womeninwar are often the #peacebuilders. But research by CARE shows only 5% of conflict stories focus on women. This means they are often left out of the discussions and decision-making that could help prevent conflict, support people during war or even lead to #peace. https://lnkd.in/epks5pYp

War is taking a devastating toll on women in Gaza, in Sudan, in Yemen, and in a growing number of other places around the world. Women pay a disproportionate price for armed conflicts that are mostly started, led, and perpetrated by men. CARE has 10 years of data showing that women know what they, their families, and their communities need in peacetime as well as in war. But their voices and powerful potential remain stifled by pernicious stereotypes and outdated systems that lock them out of conversations that can prevent war and lead to peace. Earlier this year in #Haiti, armed gangs mounted coordinated attacks on police stations, two of the main prisons in Port-au-Prince, the international airport, and numerous other sites. The level of violence since then has been unprecedented. According to the United Nations, the crisis has forced 580,074 people – half of them children – to flee their homes.
