We’ve not heard from you for a while. How are you? Is everything ok? I got many messages and emails along these lines towards the end of 2023 / beginning of 2024. Friends, professional connections, colleagues outside academia who tried to get in touch with me heard nothing but crickets. In preparation for a trip of a lifetime, I took a large step back from social media. I didn’t monitor any of my accounts, didn’t check messages, didn’t post nor did I consume social media passively. I was off the thing, completely. Meeting this man, in London, last week was what prompted me to finally come out of my contemplative cocoon. Sharamentsa, a village of about 100 indigenous men, women, and children of the Achuar tribe, is as remote as it gets. It’s on the banks of the awe-inspiring Pastaza river, one of the major tributaries of the Amazon River in Ecuador, not far from the Peruvian border. The nearest town is about a 10-day walk away. That’s the place where I left a piece of my heart in January 2024, and that’s where Uyunkar Domingo Peas is from. Meeting him in London out of all places was a sign for me to break my contemplative silence and start sharing stories from this journey. Stories of the Achuar’s incredibly rich culture and language, their way of life inside the jungle, and why they seek connection and collaboration with the outside world. Stories on how our actions directly impact their lives and environment, and how everything is interconnected. Uyunkar, Achuar leader and president of Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance, unites 30 Ecuadorian and Peruvian tribes to safeguard 35 million hectares of rainforest and indigenous culture. Learning he'd be at London Climate Action Week, I put on my Sharamentsa regalia (necklace and earrings I bought from the local ladies) and headed to a venue in Notting Hill to meet him. An Achuar. Here in the concrete jungle! I recounted encounters with Sharamentsa's Sukut, Tee, Marco, Santa, and young Carmen, hosts who graciously shared their home, garden and food with us. Uyunkar responded: ‘Yes, that guy! Of course, I know them!’ It was surreal to talk about mutual acquaintances from such a remote place. Early June, I treated the audience of ILCA (International Language Coaching Association)'s third annual conference in Budapest to an exclusive storytelling session about this very journey, talking for the first time about my profound experience in the rainforest. It was really special. I've been planning to share some of these stories, but meeting Uyunkar in London — an Achuar leader from one of the most remote places on Earth — felt like a sign. In the coming weeks, I will share some of my personal insights from the Amazonian rainforest. Lessons on why indigenous wisdom matters for our modern world. On why we must share in the responsibility of protecting languages, cultures, communities and ecosystems of the planet we inhabit together. Maketé, Uyunkar, for inspiring me to share these stories. #LCAW24

Sustainable Marketing Consultant & Visual Storyteller 🌍 I create content that inspires impact.

Did you know 80% of the world’s biodiversity is in the stewardship of 5% of the population? Reflecting on my time attending London Climate Action Week last week. I came away feeling incredibly inspired by the brilliant speakers and amazing people I met. #LCAW hosts a diverse range of events with a focus on finding global solutions to #climatechange. On Thursday I attended day 2 of the Extreme Hangout event at the beautiful Ladbroke Hall. Extreme Hangout is a global community and climate action platform, uniting thought leaders and changemakers to share the best #sustainability practices and highlight actionable solutions that advance climate action - and it did not disappoint! My highlights: An opening talk from special guest Baroness Scotland, Head of The Commonwealth shared powerful insights, emphasising that the impossible can become possible if we work together. Her advice when asked what the greatest thing we can do today to help was simple: “Acknowledge the skills that you have and identify opportunities to make a difference.” Wellness sessions throughout the day to help us slow down and relax from Natalie Munk and her wonderful team from KAYLO. It was an honour to attend an incredibly moving panel session with Amazon Sacred Headwaters highlighting the importance of #Indigenousknowledge in preserving and protecting the #Amazonrainforest. Listening to Olivia Bisa's story, the first female President of the Chapra Nation, gave me shivers. Despite receiving death threats to silence her powerful advocacy, she bravely continues to fight ongoing legal battles for land rights and forest protection of her ancestral land. You can visit their website https://lnkd.in/e6tKKyiq to learn more about their Amazonia 80x25 initiative and show your support by signing their declaration, calling on world leaders to take action to avert the tipping point for Amazonia. It is moments like these that make me grateful for key events like LCAW for providing a platform for these stories to be shared to raise awareness about critical issues and help us join forces to protect the future of our planet. This has given me much to think about as I prepare for my next big project and probably my most challenging to date. Stay tuned for more updates! #LCAWeek2024

It was so great to be part of the Extreme Hangout team last week during London Climate Action Week. We had some incredible speakers discussing hot topics including Baroness Scotland and the Amazon Sacred Headwaters panel. I particularly loved the discussion on conserving our wild spaces, where we heard from Merlin Hanbury-Tennison of Thousand Year Trust speak about how temperate rainforests used to cover 20% of the UK! We have since wiped out 99% of that, and this was definitely a wake-up call for me. It was a reminder that while the climate crisis and ecological destruction can feel like a million miles away, we have a lot of work to do here in the UK, and so much worth saving.

One of our dedicated clients is making an impact by funding innovative forest protection efforts through their CAF Charitable Trust - a flexible, secure, and tax-effective way to manage long-term giving 🌍 Recognising the crucial role of Indigenous knowledge to address climate change and reverse biodiversity decline, our client made a sizeable donation to the Pachamama Alliance. This charity works with Indigenous people in the Amazon to amplify their voices and support Amazon Sacred Headwaters, an alliance of 30 Indigenous nations dedicated to protecting 86 million acres of diverse tropical rainforest in Ecuador and Peru. CAF made sure the donation complied with international regulations and would deliver maximum impact. These funds will be used to: ➡️ Strengthen their innovative approach to Indigenous-led forest protection. ➡️ Support during emergencies. ➡️ Empower local communities through leadership schools, bioeconomy projects, women empowerment workshops and public health initiatives. On Friday we were privileged to meet with some of the tribes who are part of the Amazon Sacred Headwaters alliance who are currently touring the UK. The evening before I had been listening to John Fullerton and Samantha Power talk about BioFi - bioregional financing facilities that might support the development of more regenerative work around the world. The contrasts between the 'needs' and necessary work in different landscapes around the world is stark. As John pointed out in the webinar, starting anywhere you can raise the funds is good because everywhere is degraded to some extent. And whilst that is undoubtedly true, I couldnt help but feel the headwaters of the Amazon hold more significance. Not just for the value of clean water and rich biodiversity to the tribes of the Amazon but to the role of the Amazon rainforest within the wider context of the world. All of our own places are special to us. We act for what we care for most, and often that's wherever we call home. Somehow in these stretched and challenging times, we need also to find support for those places that are not ours directly and yet have global value to us all. Especially those places that do not have access to influence, connections, billionaires, philanthropic funds or crowdfunding. Is that everywhere or somewhere? My place, your place, our place. As these funds establish in place, I find myself wondering if each bioregional financing facility in wealthier nations (even if in impoverished places) can find some way of directing funds around a global network to send something to those places who might struggle to create one. https://lnkd.in/e-sTqhgm
