It's brilliant to see Oxygen Conservation banging the drum for the lost rainforests of the south west. Rich and his team have been terrific supporters and partners of the work we're doing at the Thousand Year Trust to bring these vital pockets of splendour more into the public eye.
Founder @ Oxygen Conservation | Scaling Conservation, Delivering Positive Environmental & Social Impact | Natural Capital Asset Management
Temperate rainforests challenge our current natural capital valuation systems, exposing a profound contradiction. Despite their ecological richness and critical role in carbon sequestration and biodiversity, they are undervalued and deemed "worthless" within existing frameworks. These ancient ecosystems, home to diverse flora and fauna, offer invaluable services beyond immediate economic gains. They store centuries' worth of carbon and yet, they face threats from human activities and climate change. Recognising the true value of these ecosystems is imperative. Conservation credits could be a game-changer, incentivising preservation efforts and ensuring these treasures thrive for future generations. In this pivotal moment, we're called to shift our perspective and acknowledge that temperate rainforests are not only priceless but essential for sustaining life on Earth. It's time to invest in their protection and honour their irreplaceable contributions to our planet's health and our own well-being. “These ancient Atlantic temperate rainforests were where the Athurian legends were based, the Jabberwocky was set, Tolkien’s Fangorn Forest where the Ents roamed.”
“A deer sees an oak sapling on the ground and to them it’s like a Ferrero Rocher, a delicious snack.” With four exotic deer species in the UK and two native species living far outside of their carrying capacity isn't it time we started eating more venison? Until deer numbers are brought closer to ecosystem equilibrium our ancient temperate rainforests will never naturally regenerate. The pressure on oak regrowth is just too high. If we want healthy rainforests then we need to talk about deer. Thank you Siobhan Norton for writing this excellent piece and thank you to THE PIG Hotel for the fantastic partnership you've launched with us at Cabilla Cornwall | Team + Wellness Retreats and at the Thousand Year Trust. https://lnkd.in/ewT6eZTP

The team grows!
It gives me huge pleasure to announce that Ennia Bosshard and Harrison Carter are joining us at the Thousand Year Trust as our Co-Directors of Research! Ennia has spent much of her professional career across leading academic institutions focussing her research on forest restoration and the provision of their ecosystem services. Harrison, starting his career in Investment Banking and Management Consulting, now sits at the cutting edge of research for human-wildlife coexistence through the provision of novel financial mechanisms and the use of interdisciplinary approaches in research. Together, alongside our trustees, Colin Shaw, PhD, Samantha S., Chris B. and Guy Shrubsole, they bring an impact focused strategic direction for research at the Thousand Year Trust and an infectious energy set to deliver. I am certain that with Ennia and Harrison at the helm, research at the Thousand Year Trust is set to thrive for us, and the rest of the UK!

Huge congratulations to Guy Shrubsole for winning the James Cropper Wainwright Prize in the Writing on Conservation category for his stunning book, The Lost Rainforests of Britain! Everyone should read this book. It’s our huge honour at the Thousand Year Trust that Guy is one of our founding trustees and that the rainforest at the heart of Cabilla Cornwall | Team + Wellness Retreats features beautifully in his book. He’s a great man, leading the charge for a great cause. Our other trustees, Chris Blackford, Samantha Skinner and Colin Shaw, PhD are all helping to shape the strategy and set the groundwork for our mission to triple the amount of Atlantic temperate rainforest growing across the UK. Join us in this quest to restore our rainforests. #rainforest #carbonsequestration #biodiversity #ecosystemservices #mentalhealth #cornwall https://lnkd.in/eTt6iXem

Working with Rewilding Britain and Springwise has been an absolute dream collaboration for the Thousand Year Trust. Restoring Atlantic temperate rainforests across the UK is a cause that will energise anyone who loves the natural world and wants the UK to pull its weight in the battle against climate change. #climatechange #biodiversity #rewilding #rainforests
🌲 Could we triple temperate rainforest growth in the UK by 2050? Supported by Rewilding Britain's Innovation Fund, the Thousand Year Trust is working to restore Atlantic woodland, which currently makes up less than 1 per cent of land in the UK. And the Trust's calling in wildcats to help. As Merlin Hanbury-Tenison emphasises, "[These woodlands] provide incredible benefits to mental health and wellbeing for the people who spend time amongst them. These are the habitats in the UK that we evolved in and the ones that can help heal us, both mentally and physically.” Learn more about everything the Trust is doing in our new report! ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eEuamniv

Celtic rainforest. Ancient oak woodland. Whatever you call it, it’s an amazingly rich ecosystem that we are blessed to have in Cornwall. Of course there’s nowhere near as much of it as there once was, and its recovery is inevitably a long term vision. But surely one worth embarking on. A fascinating and inspiring day yesterday with our friends at the Thousand Year Trust and The Wildlife Trusts at Cabilla Cornwall | Team + Wellness Retreats on the edge of Bodmin moor. We’ll be working hard together on this one… #naturerecovery Rob Stoneman Merlin Hanbury-Tenison
