For decades, Pachamama Alliance has supported the Kapawi Ecolodge in its mission to generate local income, preserve Achuar traditions, and protect the Amazon Rainforest. Today, the Ecolodge is managed by the Kapawi, Suwa, and Kusutkau communities, which collaborate with neighboring communities to strengthen ecotourism in the lower Pastaza Basin, a region within the Sacred Headwaters of the Amazon. Discover more about our partnership with the Achuar from co-founders Lynne Twist and John Perkins.

In the late 1990s, some of the Achuar people from the Ecuadorian rainforest partnered with the founders of the Pachamama Alliance. This partnership was based on the belief that all people on this planet have a critical stake in the well-being of the Amazon rainforest. This collaboration led to two major achievements: The creation of the Kapawi Ecolodge, a sustainable tourism venture owned and operated by the Achuar, and the inclusion of Rights of Nature in the 2008 Ecuador Constitution. Learn more about this partnership to preserve the ancestral lands and culture of the Achuar.

In 2023, Fundación Pachamama and Amazonian Indigenous federations CONFENIAE and COICA—along with the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance, Reforest'Action, and the Sacred Headwaters Alliance—began a reforestation project in the provinces of Pastaza and Morona Santiago within the Sacred Headwaters region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The Reforesting Edible Forests project aims to plant more than 167,000 native trees and non-timber plants to support Amazonian families and communities' food gardens, known as chakras. This initiative also seeks to offer economic alternatives to extractive industries. Efforts to protect the Amazon's ecosystem and support local economies are ongoing as the project nears completion in June 2024.

In March 2024, Fundación Pachamama organized the Amazonía Gastronómica event in Quito, Ecuador, where chefs, bartenders, and representatives from non-profit organizations and Indigenous communities gathered to showcase sustainable forest products and their many culinary uses. The event aimed to honor and protect ancestral agroforestry spaces in the Amazon, promote mindful consumption of local, organic foods, and support bio-entrepreneurship. It also highlighted the essential role of women, known as "chakramamas," in cultivating family food gardens and preserving ancestral knowledge in the Amazon region. This gathering highlighted the diversity and culinary richness of the Amazon and the symbiotic relationship between traditional Indigenous knowledge, sustainable agriculture, and gastronomic innovation.

Since 2006, the Ikiama Nukuri program has collaborated with the Achuar Nation of Ecuador to develop a culturally appropriate, empowering, and sustainable model for maternal, infant, and community health. Fundación Pachamama works collectively with Achuar and Shuar women to improve their health and well-being through workshops focusing on safe childbirth, family planning, nutrition, preventing intrafamily violence, and more. Supporting women’s leadership not only strengthens systemic change but also improves the health of communities. Learn more about this vital program at https://hubs.li/Q02sM8x20
