NEW EPISODE. My recent guest on the Entangled World podcast was Don Four Arrows Jacobs also known as Wahinkpe Topa. Four Arrows is internationally respected for his expertise in #Indigeneity and applications for living life in balance. He is a prolific author of many books and writings about the vital necessity of restoring our pre-colonial #worldview. I first came across his work when I read the most recent book he co-wrote with Darcia Narvaez, Restoring the #Kinship Worldview: 28 Precepts for Rebalancing Life on Mother #Earth. It is absolutely worth the read, it is a thought-provoking exploration into how we’re living and what we can learn from Indigenous and ancient cultures that have lived in harmony with all of life for centuries before colonization and industrialization became the norm. In this episode, Four Arrows takes me on a journey exploring the Indigenous worldview, non-duality, and origin stories and myths. We talk about #anthropocentrism, this idea that humans sit atop the pyramid of life and that everything else on Earth is inferior to and here for humans to use and then discard as they see fit. This human-centric worldview lies at the root of our entangled crises and we explore some untraditional ways that worldviews and ultimately culture, might shift. New podcast! 🎧 I spoke with Laura May, PhD for the Conflict Tipping Podcast about my PhD research on #peacebuilding in #SouthAfrica. I discuss the challenges and opportunities of using indigenous knowledge for peace, as well as the challenges local community-based organisations face, and how everyday acts of care aren't taken seriously as legitimate peacebuilding. The Refusal of the Call & the Voice of Doubt In most great stories, after the traveler hears their call and before they embark on their journey, they pass through a phase that mythologist Joseph Campbell named the Refusal of the Call. During the Refusal of the Call, community members, specters, and voices in the traveler’s own mind confront them with fears of unexplored lands and dangerous creatures that live outside the village walls. Although our callings promise something valuable to those who dare proceed, the journey is risky and without guarantee. None of us can predict with certainty whether we’ll reach our destination or survive the journey. We never know when we may encounter a landslide, rabid animal, or sudden sandstorm. And so, in this phase, we encounter a Voice of Doubt. An inner Voice of Doubt is the part of ourselves that cries Yeah but… and What if…? in an attempt to keep us safe. An outer Voice of Doubt is a person we care about who does not understand our calling and tries to convince us not to go. The greater the risk and the more we care, the louder the what ifs. What's the difference between your version of events and a really good story? Ever heard of bog bodies? They are ancient corpses preserved in peat bogs because of a beautiful combination of naturally-occurring chemicals. In 1984, my Dad (plus volunteers including my Mum!) excavated one of the best bog bodies ever found in the UK. He's called Lindow Man and you can see him in the British Museum. Last year, a very prolific and well-known podcast series contacted our family to research an episode all about the find. It was exciting! We told them lots of things and thought about how brilliant it would be to hear them on an episode of a famous podcast! When the episode was released, it was different to what we were expecting. We didn't agree with everything they'd focused on; there were angles that didn't seem important to us. In truth, although it was a great podcast, we were left feeling a bit hurt. But that's what storytelling is all about. As galling as it can feel, a series of facts about something you know well might not be very interesting to others. It's what you do with those facts that counts. Often, people outside your organisation are best placed to pinpoint what that is. And if it's the difference between the story being told exactly the way you want it or a story delighting an audience, I know which I'd choose.
