"Complex and sophisticated...Absolutely un-put-downable!"
~ The Prairies Book Reviews

Erica O’Donnell is hardly the quintessential high school senior. She doesn’t have a driver’s license. She’s never been to a concert. Sports are out of the question. She doesn’t own a pair of heels. No boy has ever asked her out. All of this for good reason: Erica faints. A lot. And at the most inconvenient times.

Chronic fainting, also known as syncope, keeps Erica on the sidelines as the odd-girl out. Luckily, Lindsay Bennett hovers nearby to catch Erica each time she nose-dives to the floor. Lindsay isn’t only Erica’s best friend—for four years she’s been her savior.

But things are about to change.

When Lindsay breaks up with her boyfriend Adam to pursue a married man, Erica is intrigued. But as Lindsay’s relationship intensifies, Erica finds her own world spinning out of control: from covering up her friend’s affair, to hiding her feelings for Adam, to casting suspicion when a string of arson fires sweeps through the town.

Gradually peeling away layers of deception from those she trusts the most, Erica must decide how far she is willing to go to uncover truths—and how many people will get burned in the process.

Hello, Lovely Readers! I am an award-winning novelist who loves writing about grown-ups (GAGA, MAGGIE’S DREAM, and KNOCK ON WOOD) and young adults (UPSIDE DOWN IN A LAURA INGALLS TOWN, I AM ELEPHANT, I AM BUTTERFLY, and RULES OF FALLING). I especially love digging into universal ideas such as friendship, bravery, and self-forgiveness. When I'm not spending quality time with the characters in my head, I speak at libraries, schools, and book clubs. I am proudly represented by Uwe Stender at the TriadaUS Literary Agency. I am currently gearing up for my new book FERAL MARIL & HER LITTLE BROTHER CAROL, about a young girl who aims to steal back her mentally challenged brother when they are separated by the foster care system. A bit about Me the Reader: I also work as a private tutor so I get to re-read classics as well as jump into newer books. My personal reading tastes are eclectic, but I can get into most genres as long as the book is well written. I do not lean toward heavy romance, erotica, early middle grade, animal books, or super fantasy. I am picky about what I read, just as I am picky about what I write. Tall Manning is on FIRE with this novel!

Let us start by saying all SENIORS should read this book in High School, YES, IN SCHOOL.

Parents get over anything you may find as "CRUDE." PAY ATTENTION to the LESSON in the book.

1. The medical diagnosis of Erica: Unspecified Syncope, which can happen to anyone at any time in their lives

2. Larry the creep: NO TIME IS IT OK FOR A 30 YR OLD MAN TO BE WITH A 17 YR OLD GIRL.

As the author states, "Not only is it illegal, but it's also morally unjust" No friend should be covering it up, and GIRLS, TELL YOUR PARENT'S ASAP! IT HAPPENS MORE TIMES THAN WE THINK! IT HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I WAS 16, AND HE WAS 23. BUT MY PARENTS FOUND OUT AND THREATENED HIM WITHIN AN INCH OF HIS LIFE AND JAIL. OF COURSE, THAT DOESN'T STOP A PREDATOR, BUT IT DID STOP ME. MOM IS PRETTY SCARY, THANK GOD!

So be competent; it could save your life.

Tall-Manning tells the incredible story of Erica, who suffers bouts of syncope, meaning she faints at any given time. But luckily, she has her best friend Lindsay, who catches her before she falls and suffers any damaging injury.

However, things start to change for the girls when Lindsay babysits for the Taggerts. No longer is Lindsay there to catch Erica like she used to be.

Lindsay is more interested in being with Larry Taggert, Firefighter, while Erica is on the sidelines with Lindsay's boyfriend, Adam. Adam is a sweet guy, but he is just a volunteer firefighter, and he is the one helping Erica now.

While the two girls are dealing with their drama, their town is being riddled with an arsonist on top of it all.

Tall Manning gives a thought-provoking, intelligently crafted novel.

The word building is stupendously done with a flourishing backdrop for this novel.

Tall Manning has outdone herself with Rules of Falling!

Brilliantly captivating!

This tale is vividly told and makes you pause so many times. Not only from a medical standpoint but from a predatory standpoint.

Tall Manning is a seasoned author and splendidly shines with her delivery of this novel.

Netflix needs to pick this novel up for the screen. This would be great for a Y/A adaptation for so many reasons.

The insecurity of oneself and the need to feel good about oneself lead to the older man syndrome.

I could go on and on complimenting Tall Manning and this novel. But I shall digress and leave it for others to read.

Just note this is genuinely a MUST-READ!

KUDOS TO TALL MANNING!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

RULES OF FALLING by Leslie Tall Manning will engulf your senses and your time--I finished her novel in one night because there was no way I was going to put it down. Manning pens another engrossing, realistic, and heart-felt young adult novel that never shies away from edgy situations and high-risk drama. Set in modern day Eastern North Carolina, The protagonist, Erica O'Donnell suffers from syncope, which I didn't know much about--Manning is a brilliant researcher who also weaves her facts in so superbly into the narrative, a true master of the genre.

Rules of Falling is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a teenage girl with an unusual condition. Erica never knows when she is going to faint, and it severely limits her freedom and the independence a girl her age desperately needs. She is completely believable as a character, from her personal fears and desires to her interpersonal relationships, all of which are necessarily complicated by her condition. Her relationship with her mother and with her best friend Lindsay are especially layered and realistic, with all the tensions one would expect from such relationships.

At first Erica seems overshadowed by Lindsay, whose choices make her life more interesting than Erica’s from a plot perspective, but Erica comes into her own as the novel progresses, and readers will want to cheer on this highly sympathetic protagonist.

This novel is a page-turner, with some twists and turns I didn't see coming. Leslie Tall Manning has written a riveting tale that readers of all ages will enjoy!

Erica O’Donnell is a high school girl who suffers from syncope, or, chronic fainting. Her condition has made her parents overprotective and fearful every time she leaves the house, asks to try something new, or even bends down to tie her shoes.

Erica’s best friend, Lindsay, has always been around to literally catch her when she falls. But lately, Lindsay’s attention has shifted towards the father of her babysitting charges, local firefighter Larry Taggert.

Keeping Lindsay’s growing relationship with Larry a secret along with a growing number of fires in the area, turns Erica’s world upside down. With the help of Lindsay’s boyfriend, Adam, Erica is able to help cover for her friend, but the growing guilt and suspicion towards Larry’s motives begins to rip their friendship apart, and for the first time since receiving her diagnosis, Erica is left to maneuver through the world without her best friend and safety net.

Rules of Falling is a compelling YA novel with an interesting plot, well-developed characters, and a suspenseful, exciting tone. It’s a great read for a YA reader of any age who is looking for more than just a straightforward romance, thriller, or contemporary fiction as this book blends all of these genres into one well-paced, expertly developed story.

Leslie Tall Manning's "Rules of Falling" is a fast-paced and tense YA novel that tells the story of Erica, a teenage girl with syncope who struggles to build and maintain close friendships. As the story unfolds through Erica's eyes, we witness the predatory behavior of a married fireman who grooms and seduces her best friend and classmate, Lindsay. It's a gripping read that's hard to put down.

A fascinating insight into the experience of a student with a chronic disease. Erica has syncope, which means she can faint for no reason. She’s got used to these absences over time, but as she gets older and starts to think about college, her condition feels more of a restriction.
Her best friend has, for years, supported her. Unfortunately, the relationship between them comes under pressure when Erica learns Lindsay has fallen for an older, married, man. The tension between them brews.
As we watch their relationship unravel it’s hard to tell whether Erica’s misgivings are caused by concern for her friend or whether there’s something to the feeling. Erica comes to rely on Adam, Lindsay’s ex, as she tries to support her friend…while looking for answers.
Things build to a dramatic climax, one which took us in quite a different direction to that expected.

I am a fan of Leslie Tall Manning’s work, having read all six of her published novels. And, somehow, her writing just seems to get better with each release.

RULES OF FALLING, her latest, centers on Erica, a teen who suffers from syncope (fainting spells), and her best friend and protector, Lindsay. Introduce heartthrob Adam, and you have the makings of the perfect teen friendship and romance. Yet there is so much more to this story than teen friendship and romance…

When Lindsay makes a profoundly damaging judgment call, friendships are shattered, and painful hidden truths come to light. A tale of deception and manipulation, RULES OF FALLING is an edgy teen tale with a terrifying, heart pounding ending.

Though it’s a great adult read, RULES OF FALLING is a young adult novel that should be required reading for all teen girls.

Rules of Falling follows Erica, who suffers from the fainting disorder syncope and has a less than normal life because of it. Her best friend Lindsay helps by staying by her side at all times, but a rift drives a wedge between the two as Lindsay begins a relationship with a married man. Erica quickly finds herself buried in secrets, which all begin to come to light as a string of mysterious fires hit her town.

Rules of Falling gave me a lot of the same vibes as i am Elephant, i am Butterfly, and I am just as impressed with this book. Once again, I had to take a step back and let it all sink in before writing this review. Lots and lots of things going on here: chronic medical disorders, predatory relationships, arson, and more. How did this all fit into one book and still manage to flow and read well? Color me impressed. And while Erica is the lead and a great one at that, I found myself fascinated with how Lindsay's character was written. It's easy to get so frustrated with her, but when things start to go wrong, the reader is reminded of how young she is and how this impacts her choices and outcomes (parents: her story is incredibly important to read). I also feel like I should have seen the twist coming, yet I was completely caught off guard! I could keep going, but I'll just leave it at this: pick up a copy of Rules for Falling when it publishes, readers will not be disappointed.

Thanks to BookSirens for this ARC; this is my honest and voluntary review.

Erica O’Donnell does not live the exciting life one might expect of a high school senior; ever since she started suffering from a disease called syncope, she has been closely monitored and limited in her activities. Luckily, Erica’s best friend Lindsay is by her side through it all, ready to catch Erica any time one of her spells hits her and to make sure she has whatever she might need in the moment. But Lindsay is also a high school senior, and she has more on her mind now than she used to, especially since she grew into her body the previous summer. As boys become more aware of Lindsay, she gets wrapped up in moments that take her away from Erica and the friendship they used to have. And at the same time, mysterious events in their small North Carolina town have everyone on edge, and Lindsay and Erica find themselves squarely in the middle of it all.

This gripping young adult novel is especially well-suited to fans of John Green who enjoy contemporary fiction and stories where characters grow into what they are truly capable of becoming. From the first moments, readers connect easily with Erica and feel sympathy for her as she manages the unknowns that come from a disease that has no known cure and can come upon her at any moment. For years, Erica has lived in something of a bubble, protected by Lindsay as the two follow more or less the same path. But as Lindsay begins to travel a different road, Erica has to learn to trust herself and convince others that she is worthy of that trust. Strong character development guides this novel, and as mysterious circumstances begin to make themselves known, readers will enjoy discovering the truth along with Erica and her friends.

While this book features a character who suffers from syncope, the story focuses more on how the disease affects her life than on its causes or remedies. An author’s note at the end of the book goes into more detail about the disease itself, and a list of discussion questions can be used in book clubs or classrooms to dive deeper into the subject matter found in the story. Occasional strong language and conversations about sex and relationships are found within the book, all of which are thoughtfully included and add to the overall message of the narrative. Compelling and well-structured, this book is one that older young adult and adult readers alike will devour as they grow to care about each of the characters and the quagmire in which they find themselves. This is an excellent piece of contemporary fiction and one that will augment the quality of library collections for young adult readers.

I received a copy of this book from the author and I chose to leave this review.

Rules of falling starts of with a strong and addictive style and keeps it through the whole story. The story follows Erica, a teenager with a fainting condition, as she watches her best friend get involved with an older married man. Meanwhile a strange amount of fires start breaking out in the town. This is what makes the story so interesting. You watch the main character have to figure out how much she will tolerate and also watch as her gut feelings lead to much bigger things happening in her small town that no one else notices.

Erica is well written character. She has a lot of common sense but also feels like she has a duty to protect those who have looked out for her. She handles the struggles have fainting amazingly as well. As someone with a condition that causes fainting when standing too long and another condition that was actually brought up in the story I was really impressed how on point it felt. The author did an amazing job of really giving insight into it in a very realistic way while also writing an enjoyable and entrancing main character.

I would place this story in the young adult romantic suspense category if I had to place it. It's a mix of all three and a great story for anyone fifteen and up. Adults can definitely enjoy this one even with it being from a teenager perspective. it had a lot of twists I never saw coming. Rules of falling deserves the five star rating I'm giving it.

Wonderful character development - enough hints about the plot were given to keep me reading to see if I was right but not so many as to make reading to the final word boring. Well done, Leslie Tall Manning!

CW: book contains themes such as statutory rape, grooming, and fainting/syncope.

It has been a while since I've read a book in one sitting because I've been sucked into it.
I loved the disability representation. Initially, I wondered why Manning didn't specify which type of syncope Erica had, but after reading the book (and her author note), I really appreciated the idea of focusing on the syncope spectrum (especially since there is so little representation in media!)

The characterization was strong and clear from the beginning. The themes were difficult, but handled well.

The tension was great, as were the twists and turns throughout. Normally when there is a lack of communication between characters in books, I get frustrated because their reasons for not talking are not compelling enough, or the conflict rests too heavily on miscommunication. However, Manning manages to beautifully weave a story where any lack of communication not only makes sense, but is the most reasonable route. Additionally, other subplots have alternative conflicts, and Erica is easy to root for.

Some minor things: AP Physiology is not an AP class. I would have liked another scene between Lindsay and Erica, even after the hospital scene, for a bit more conclusion, although I also understand why that wasn't included.

Erica a high school student suffers from chronic fainting. Her best friend Lindsay is always there to help. But things soon begin to change. Lindsay breaks up with her boyfriend Adam to pursue an older married man and arson fires sweep the town Erica finds her own world slowly getting out of control. How far will Erica go to discover the truth and how many people will get hurt in the process.

This was so good from reading about Erica's chronic fainting to Lindsay's illegal relationship and to the arson fires and the firefighters it kept me intrigued on where it was going to go and how it would all fit together. I really didn't want to put this down. I feel this is a book every teen should read even if just for Lindsay's story because that's a powerful story that needs to be told.

I loved the romance in this book and that every character was very well fleshed out. There was twists and turns that keep you gripped too.

This is my first read by Leslie tall Manning but definitely not my last.

Once again Leslie Tall Manning nails the teenage psyche with this engaging young adult novel. Erica, our main character suffers from syncope, a fainting disease. Her best friend, Lindsay, knows just what to do when Erica suffers a fainting spell and helps her navigate her way through high school. But everything changes when Lindsay becomes obsessed with a married man. Erica doesn’t trust Lindsay’s new heartthrob and is convinced he is not the man Lindsay thinks he is. But when Erica tries to warn her, Lindsay pushes her away. Couple that with a series of mysterious fires and you have a coming of age, romance, and mystery story all rolled into one that will keep readers engaged from beginning to end. Highly recommended. Author Leslie Tall Manning, in her novel, Riles of Falling, has the unique talent of creating vivid engaging characters and setting these people into fascinating settings. The main character, Erica O'Donnell a high school senior suffers from syncope, temporary loss of consciousness caused by a fall in blood pressure. This condition influences her world and relationships. Erica is at the center of dramatic events, which Manning tells with such talent, that it feels all too real. A great read.

I will be honest and say that after reading the summary, I wasn't sure that this book would measure up to Upside Down in a Laura Ingalls Town. But the writing sucks you in at the beginning and holds your attention the whole time. There were just enough twists and turns to keep it from being predictable while mainting focus on the ups and downs of teen life when you are just a bit different. This would be great for reluctant high school readers or for book clubs with a YA focus. Thoroughly enjoyable! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Leslie Tall-Manning has done it again in her latest book, RULES OF FALLING. Her understanding of syncope, as well as the inner workings of an infatuated high school girl, are right on point. The book takes you to places you didn't anticipate, which is always a thrill as a reader. The cover is also stunning and after you finish reading the book, I encourage you to take another look at it. Other meanings become evident. Highly recommend!

“Rules of Falling” introduces Erica O’Donnell, a high school senior with a medical condition (syncope) which causes her to faint —often at inopportune times. Her best friend, Lindsay, has her back and helps her out at every turn. They drives to/from school and share every class together. They basically share everything together until Lindsay starts dating Adam.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. It is an easy read with pacing and language that allows for moving through the story quickly. There’s a reveal/twist which felt organic and made sense to pull the whole story together. I really liked Erica as a protagonist. She’s flawed, overly trusting, a little naïve, but a dreamer. Adam is also a great character who adds a lot of dimension and positivity to the story. I wish Lindsay and Larry’s characters were a little more developed. Larry is a super creep - absolutely hated but simply 1 note. Find the full blog review at heatherlbarksdale.com

i was teetering between 3 and 4 but i ultimately, i gave it a 4 because i read this in 3 days contrary to the actual dates listed.

my first impression of this book was not the best. the cover looked very photoshopped. i hear you. it's a woman with her hair on fire. of course it's going to be photoshopped. it just doesn't look super polished.

but i read the blurb (shoutout to booksirens) and i was intrigued. medical conditions, illicit affairs, star-crossed lovers, POTENTIAL MURDER AND LITERAL FIRES WITH FLAMES AND EMBERS AND ASHES. sign me up.

i found myself gripped by the book once the actual affair started. it took me a while to pick this up for real once i got approval to read this (mostly because i was busy) but because i wasn't really that interested. when larry started doing illegal shit, i was suddenly glued to my computer. i don't know if it was the anticipation of my girlie erica's bff dying or the super cute chemistry between her and adam that kept me going. either way, i really enjoyed it.

the plot was pretty easy to follow through. i was happy enough that there wasn't a lot of fluff going on. it progressed at the pace that was comfy. i like the plot. it's creepy and scary to think that grooming is a thing but it is. i think that younger people should be made more aware of the signs that they're being groomed. it will hopefully avoid trauma. and if this does happen to anyone, that they get help and justice. i hope that people who read this who have friends (i worded this that way bc i don't have friends), that they keep them accountable because erica is very tolerant of lindsay's behaviour. that's not right.

also because this is pretty YA, i imagined the setting as a bulk standard YA small town.

the characters were fleshed out enough that i don't really have any questions about them. erica was a good character. she feels like a real person. i believe her struggles with syncope. i believe her complacency with lindsay's affair because we turn a blind eye for the people that we love. i believe her crush with adam was rooted in insecurity but is very pure. lindsay's well written as well. i think she echoes the same sentiments when we're told that what we're doing is wrong. she defensive and naive which is typical for people at that age. i don't know why i wish she dies in this book but i think it's the conclusion my brain was leaning towards and when it didn't happen, i was mad. lol. adam feels very much like a manic pixie dream girl. think of a boy version of that. that's adam i think. i just kept thinking... no one's like this right. maybe that's my cynicism talking but legit no one is like this... right??? larry a shithead for everything and he's really well written. he written pretty convincingly. i can see why young girls would fall for him. i also love josephine. lol.

why is this a 4 and not a 5? because it is very trope-y. that's it... and maybe because a particular character *lindsay* doesn't die.

my hidden notes are my kindle notes so it's totally skippable. in hindsight, they don't really make a lot of sense because they don't have context when i transfer them onto here but it's below if you're at all interested. otherwise... my final thoughts are at the end.

this book is actually really good. definitely would recommend especially if you just want a light read but you still want to experience the excitement from mystery and the flutter from a romance.

disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. :)

First person POV (single)

This book was such a pleasant surprise. It had been waiting on my TBR for such a long time that I'd forgotten the synopsis and went in blind. So SO enjoyable!

My reading notes 📝

• Very easy & quick read
• Strong everything. Strong characters, strong setting, strong story.
• Erica - what a unique MC
• Native American rep
💚 Adam is a nice guy
Fire🔥
• Josephine is a lovely person
• Important topics & conversations

As you can tell from my notes, Not remembering the synopsis and not having any expectations made this such a fun and immersive experience.

Favourite character: Lindsay.

Lindsay is confident, bold, and very naive and imperfect. I liked her depth and layers.

I appreciate how the author shed light on an almost unknown ailment. I also appreciate the heavy topics and difficult conversations.

I loved how Erica wasn't afraid to question Lindsay's morals and behaviour, even if Erica herself wasn't perfect.

The added romance and Erica's personality added a much needed relief and leveled the balance between light and dark. I thought it was great.

Rules of Falling by Leslie Tall Manning is a mystery, romance and coming of age novel all in one. Manning does an excellent job creating complex and intriguing characters, and by the end of the first chapter I was fully aligned with Erica, the protagonist living with syncope. Erica manages high school thanks to her best friend and protector Lindsey, but when Lindsey becomes obsessed with her affair with a married man, things quickly complicate.

Erica tries to protect her friend, but ends up being pulled into the drama along with Lindsey’s ex-boyfriend Adam. Against the backdrop of a string of unsolved fires in town, Erica must deal with lies, betrayal, and navigating her newfound feelings for Adam. With each chapter Manning escalates the tension, and the intense ending both surprises and inspires.

Using the combination of mystery and strong character development, Rules of Falling expertly tackles the teenage challenges of friendship, romance, fitting in, independence and making ethical choices. This is a fabulous read for all ages, but young adults will especially resonate with the themes.

What a page-turner! From the moment I saw the photo cover I was hooked. Manning pulls you in from the get-go with a truly unique medical condition teenager Erica O'Donnell must navigate. Manning has done another superb job with this book. Her characters promote empathy as well as intrigue for a story that gets more complicated and surprising with each chapter. The pacing and flow of events were spot-on. I found it hard to put this one down. Not being a Southerner, I loved the little quirky phrases and mannerisms that echoed the Southern roots of the characters. All in all this book satisfies - on many levels: great character development, intrigue, conflict, and a bit of romance for those who appreciate that kind of twist. A must-read for sure!

I certainly learnt a lot about syncope, an illness I’d not heard of until this book.

Generally I find young adult books entertaining but other than Eliza and the effects of her illness, much of this book is about American high school which does not really interest me at all.

There’s a lot of ‘poetic licence’ in this book since Adam is an experienced volunteer firefighter but still in high school! Look up the requirements if you find this as incredible as I do.

An interesting plot twist at the end but overall I didn’t really enjoy this story.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This book had me learning things I did not know. I did not know there was a name for chronic fainting which is called Syncope. Erica and Lindsay have been on the same path for a long time. Lindsay has been there to catch her each time she faints, but when an affair with Larry takes her down a new path. Now with the help of Adam, who is Lindsay's boyfriend (ex), to cover for Lindsay and discover what is going on with the fires. The book took me on a journey that showed me many things.

Yes I learned a lot about syncopy but it’s hard to get invested in a main character who is so obviously a supporting character in someone else’s much more interesting story.
