Clarissa Harwood is the author of three historical novels. Publishers Weekly called her first novel, Impossible Saints, "a rich debut. . . . With insight and sensitivity, Harwood explores century-old social mores and challenges that still echo loudly today." Her second novel, Bear No Malice, won the Editor's Choice award from the Historical Novel Society and was called "a smart and highly civilized tale about love, temptation, and second chances" by Kirkus Reviews.

Clarissa holds a PhD in English Literature with a specialization in nineteenth-century British Literature and has taught university literature and writing courses for more than twenty years.

Hi Emily,
Thanks for your question and for letting me know you enjoyed IMPOSSIBLE SAINTS! I'm definitely writing other books, and they're all at different stages of development. I can't say too much about this yet, but I have written a companion novel to IMPOSSIBLE SAINTS with some of the same characters. I'll post again here and on my website www.clarisaharwood.com as soon as I can share more information!

I'm editing my answer to add that I can now reveal the happy news that my second novel BEAR NO MALICE will be published in January 2019! You can find more information about it in my new blog post: http://www.clarissaharwood.com/the-di...(less)

Two of his four children traveled to Hungary and met his relatives, but when they returned, he didn't seem to want to look at their photos or hear their stories. He never talked about Hungary, though he really liked my Hungarian dad (his son-in-law), and they had long conversations in Hungarian. Nobody knows why he wouldn't speak of his own family or his previous life in the old country. Was he just very homesick and it made him sad to think about it? Did something bad happen there that was too painful to discuss? We'll likely never know.(less)

Wendy Teller’s Hungarian Trilogy

I’m very happy to introduce Wendy Teller, a fellow historical novelist whom I met through the Great Lakes chapter of the Historical Novel Society. Wendy and I have Hungarian ancestry in common as well as a love of history. Her second book in The Hungarian trilogy, Hungarian Elegy, has just been published, and she kindly took the time to answer my questions about it.

First, what is The Hungar

“She wore her beauty as if it were a medal she had won for fighting in a war she didn’t remember—it was her duty to display it, yet she seemed vaguely puzzled by its existence.”
Clarissa Harwood, Bear No Malice

“She could have made an independent life for herself, instead of being stuck in this horrid village forever.” “Like you?” Lilia blinked. “I went to Girton.” “I know. But you’re back, ‘stuck in this horrid village,’ aren’t you? Why do you stay here?”
Clarissa Harwood, Impossible Saints
