This past week, I had the privilege of presenting to some amazing Vistage Worldwide, Inc. groups in Chicago. We delved into the ever-relevant topic of employee retention, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you on it. Key Insight: Employee retention isn't just about offering competitive salaries or flashy perks—it's about creating a culture where employees feel valued, engaged, and aligned with the company’s mission. Retention starts with the first interaction. It's about building trust and showing genuine care for your team members as individuals, not just as employees. What can you do? - Engagement Over Perks: While perks can attract talent, genuine engagement keeps them. Like in any relationship, employees are more likely to engage if they feel connection, respect and appreciated. - Autonomy: Providing employees with autonomy in their roles can significantly reduce turnover rates. It’s about trusting your team to do their jobs without micromanagement. - Continuous Development: Invest in employee growth and development. Our discussions emphasized that retention is a proactive, ongoing effort. Leaders must be willing to invest in their teams (and in their own leadership skills) and create an environment where employees want to stay and grow. Feel free to DM me if you'd like to discuss your strategies for retention. I am here to help. Thank you Steven Larrick, Mark A. Shapiro, David Galowich, and Aimee Daniels for inviting me into your groups for these workshops. #EmployeeRetention #Leadership #WorkplaceCulture #EmployeeEngagement #PowerofVistage

🌟 Sneak Peak: The Decision-Making Mindset 🌟 Here's a process developed to help professionals achieve a clear and focused mindset for making effective decisions. This framework is part of my newest keynote and workshop on decision-making, designed for professionals interested in making better decisions: - Accept: Acknowledge that you’re feeling anxious about the decision. - Assess: Evaluate your level of discomfort and identify its sources. - Identify: Pinpoint the perceived threats contributing to your anxiety. - Predict: Recognize any negative self-talk that might cloud your judgment. - Confront: Face your doubts and challenge them head-on. - Learn: Observe the situation without judgment to gather unbiased insights. - Detach: Separate yourself from the potential future outcomes to maintain objectivity. Each step is simple, but not necessarily easy, and we discuss how to successfully go through the process. It helps one prepare mentally and emotionally to tackle complex choices with confidence. Out of sight, out of mind I recently had the pleasure of leading a workshop on generational dynamics for Mark A. Shapiro’s group, and we delved into some fascinating discussions about workplace perceptions. A key point that resonated was the Baby Boomer mindset: many Boomers tend to believe that if they can’t see you working, then you’re not working. This belief can significantly impact workplace dynamics, especially in today’s flexible, remote work environments. So what can we do about that? For Boomer Leaders: - Trust and Transparency: Transition to a trust-based management style. Focus on outcomes rather than physical presence. - Embrace Flexibility: Recognize that productivity isn’t tied to a desk. Embrace remote work tools and flexible schedules. For Employees with Boomer Bosses: - Communicate Clearly: Keep your boss informed about your work progress regularly. - Show Reliability: Be consistently reliable and deliver on your commitments to build trust. Understanding and bridging these generational gaps can lead to a more cohesive and productive work environment. Would you like to drive productivity by helping your teams learn and understand each other? Schedule a generations workshop with me, or sign them up for my new Generations Master Class, and let's enhance understanding and collaboration in your workplace. Thank you Danny Farne, Craig Costa, Erick Blake, Gretchen LeMay, and all those I can't tag for the insightful discussion! #GenerationalDifferences #Leadership #RemoteWork #WorkplaceCulture #TrustInTheWorkplace #hybridwork #powerofvistage Vistage Worldwide, Inc.

Have you ever had a positive onboarding experience? What did it entail? As it turns out, only 12% of employees strongly agree that their organization does a great job of onboarding new employees. This highlights a critical gap that many organizations face, and in my opinion, a low-effort/high impact investment for employee engagement and retention. That’s why an entire module of our Culture Catalyst program is dedicated to it. Effective onboarding is crucial for: - Building Early Engagement: Setting a positive tone from day one. - Reducing Turnover: Proper onboarding can reduce the likelihood of new hires leaving within the first year. - Boosting Productivity: Well-onboarded employees reach their full potential faster. Investing in a comprehensive onboarding program not only benefits new hires but also strengthens the overall organizational culture and performance. DM me if you want to discuss your onboarding strategy, or join our Culture Catalyst community. #EmployeeOnboarding #WorkplaceCulture #EmployeeEngagement #Leadership #TalentManagement

A question I frequently get from CEOs is how to transition from a classic to a social capitalism culture. Let's clear this up—SOCIAL CAPITALISM is not SOCIALISM or COMMUNISM. We're still very much in the business of making profits here. 😉 This was a big topic in last week's Culture Trumps Everything workshops with some Tampa Bay Execs. The key to this transition lies in COURAGE. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the mastery of fear. Often, we know change is necessary and beneficial, but we hesitate. We fear losing something—be it comfort, power, or control. To drive a significant culture shift, it starts with courage. Facing that fear, embracing it, and mastering it. When we confront our fears, we pave the way for innovation, growth, and a business model that benefits everyone. Let’s lead with courage and make a positive impact together. DM me or book a call if you'd like to discuss further. I'm always available as a resource for you. #Leadership #SocialCapitalism #CourageInBusiness #CulturalShift #ProfitWithPurpose Vistage Worldwide, Inc. #powerofvistage Photos: Mastermind at Country Club of Winter Haven. In a world where paychecks are the norm, why bother with gratitude? Because beyond salaries, acknowledging and appreciating your team's efforts can be the secret sauce to unlocking employee engagement and loyalty (and productivity $$). Paying people to work for us is table stakes. Full employment in the workforce is considered 5%. The US has been below 4% unemployment since December 2021 - more than two years. Even if we pay our employees to do the job they do, we should be grateful because they could be doing the job for someone else. << I wish I could make this statement BOLD. Gratitude is one of the Leadership Superpowers that increases retention, reduces turnover, supports your culture, and adds to your bottom line. These are the kinds of discussions we delve into during my keynotes and workshops on leadership and organizational culture. If you're interested in exploring these topics further, let's chat! #Gratitude #EmployeeEngagement #LeadershipSkills 🙏

An exceptional culture doesn't just happen. There's something special about arriving extra early to an empty room, where I can take my time to get ready and the air slowly fills with anticipation for today's workshop: "Culture Trumps Everything." Walking into a quiet space before the hustle begins is a moment to reflect on the importance of preparation. Just as arriving early gives a speaker time to set the stage and ensure everything is in place, leaders need to prepare and set the tone for their teams. A strong organizational culture doesn't just happen, it is built on foresight and preparation. It's about creating an environment where employees feel valued, engaged, and committed. It's about rewarding the behaviors you want to see, and addressing the behaviors you don't (AKA accountability). When leaders prioritize culture, they unlock the true potential of their teams, driving sustained success and growth. If you want business to grow, you need to prepare and intentionally work on your culture. #CultureMatters #EmployeeEngagement #RetentionStrategies #LeadershipDevelopment #TransformYourWorkplace #PowerofVistage Interested in learning more about how to elevate your organization's culture? ✈️ Things are taking off in Minneapolis Vistage Worldwide, Inc.! ✈️ #Throwback to the whirlwind week with Howie Milstein, Christine Pouliot, PCC, CPCC and Steve Erickson's groups last month. Thank you all for a wonderful time and the opportunity to explore the critical topics of company culture and generations in the workplace. Here are some key insights we discussed that can help one strengthen their organization's culture: - Define Your Purpose: Clearly articulate your purpose and ensure it is consistently communicated and upheld. - Lead by Example: Leadership sets the tone for company culture. Demonstrate the behaviors and attitudes you want to see in your team. - Foster Open Communication: Create an environment where team members feel safe to share ideas, give feedback, and voice concerns. - Recognize and Reward: Acknowledge and celebrate behaviors that align with your cultural values to reinforce positive actions. - Promote Continuous Learning: Encourage your team to continuously seek knowledge and improvement to keep evolving your culture. Building a strong, positive culture requires ongoing effort and commitment, but the benefits in employee engagement, retention, and overall performance of all the generations in the workforce are well worth it. #Leadership #Vistage #ProfessionalSpeaker #Minnesota #HolmansField #GrowthMindset #CompanyCulture #ContinuousLearning #CoreValues #powerofvistage #TBT

Had an amazing time with everyone at our recent Culture Trumps Everything workshop! 📸 Here’s a fun selfie with all the participants holding up their non-dominant hands—a little exercise we do to practically demonstrate and experience a culture shift. During the workshop, participants had to raise their non-dominant hand to ask questions. Initially, it tends to feel uncomfortable and many would forget - then others in the group would point out. Some people will start delf correcting, and others will raise their hand and state "non-dominant" to assure everyone they're behaving appropriately. By the end, everyone could do it with little effort. This small, yet powerful exercise demonstrates how behavior change can lead to a significant culture shift. Thank you Jean LaHoste and your Vistage Worldwide, Inc. members for embracing this exercise with enthusiasm. It’s these small steps that pave the way for bigger transformations in our organizational cultures. Keep raising those hands (non-dominant, of course!) and driving positive change! 🙌 #CultureShift #LeadershipDevelopment #OrganizationalCulture #Workshops #ContinuousImprovement #powerofvistage
