A question I frequently get from CEOs is how to transition from a classic to a social capitalism culture. Let's clear this up—SOCIAL CAPITALISM is not SOCIALISM or COMMUNISM. We're still very much in the business of making profits here. 😉 This was a big topic in last week's Culture Trumps Everything workshops with some Tampa Bay Execs. The key to this transition lies in COURAGE. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the mastery of fear. Often, we know change is necessary and beneficial, but we hesitate. We fear losing something—be it comfort, power, or control. To drive a significant culture shift, it starts with courage. Facing that fear, embracing it, and mastering it. The authorship of the quote below is lost to history, but let me thank two of my heroes, Stephen R. Covey for capturing it during a trip to a Hawaii library while on sabbatical, and Viktor Frankl, whose ethos it captures but who never said or wrote it. Making the space between stimulus and response as wide and comfortable as possible is the day-to-day battle of the entrepreneur. At IGW we always joke that organizations are simple. The only problem with them is that they are comprised of human beings. The one you have the most influence over is yourself. Your odds of contending with the inevitable volatility of the world *outside* of yourself are directly tied to your ability create the tiniest bit of tranquility *within* yourself. How you do this is almost secondary. But I promise you that part of the leadership journey is getting to know the difference between engaging with yourself and escaping from yourself, and making the former a daily practice. That is part of leadership of the self.
