As of May 10th, FAFSA completions for high school students remain 17.2% below last year's numbers. However, this metric alone fails to capture the complexity of the situation. --> Students from lower-income districts exhibit a larger completion gap of 20.1% in comparison to higher-income districts, with a similar difference observed between high-minority and low-minority districts. --> It's important to note that these figures only apply to high school students aged 19 or younger submitting the FAFSA for the first time. We lack information about rates for people who are not in high school. Working adults 25 and older make up nearly 40% of the learners attending college. --> Rates vary significantly within and between states, ranging from a high of 25% below last year for Mississippi to a low of 3.8% below last year for Indiana. --> There are also variations between different counties or regions and different types of schools within states. What's clear is that these figures will have a significant impact on enrollment.

Fostering democracy? Not exactly the mission I had in mind getting into higher ed tech. But when I joined The Chronicle of Higher Education's webinar on First-Year Student Success last week, I was amazed to see so many attendees asking about strategies for getting out the vote this fall with first-year students. Since November is less than 5 months away, here are 5 ideas that anyone can use to get out the vote with Mongoose's Cadence (or whichever messaging tool you have): 1. 🎂 DOB < 11/6/06 (Now) - Remind them they can vote this year with a link to details, whether or not they're enrolled with you yet! 2. Absentee Info Poll❓(Sep) - Find students to follow up with information on requesting absentee ballots from home with a quick "Yes/No" Smart Message 3. ^Send the Nos an ⚡️auto-reply with more details on getting registered to vote/voting locally! 4. 🏅Challenge Stats (Nov) - Send out a blast text the morning of Election Day to let everyone where to go to get their "I voted" pin to help set a new campus record. 5. It's Not Too Late! (Nov) - ⏰ Schedule a text to go out on election day in the late afternoon reminding them that polls are still open! 6. Erik Ellefsen from the Baylor Center for School Leadership shared in our recent Futures Conference about the dispositions that enable schools to foster healthy innovation.   I love that Erik describes slow work as the foundation of innovation: remembering leads to hope, which leads to wonder, which leads to innovation.   It is best for us to look back before we move forward. According to CNBC, "The percentage of K-12 students and teachers who say they are using AI and approve of it has risen sharply over the past year, according to a new poll conducted by Impact Research for the Walton Family Foundation." The poll found almost half of U.S. teachers and K-12 students say they are using ChatGPT weekly, while just 20% of students say they're using it weekly. There are always a number of variables influencing students and families willingness to consider colleges and universities that solely require test preps. Hat tip to Phil Hill & Glenda Morgan for the note recently about the 'search cliff' in higher education -- I wouldn't have seen it otherwise! As Glenda highlights, buying names is becoming less and less of a viable option for colleges, "thanks in part to changing privacy laws, but also ... to declines in the use of standardized tests and worsened by the demographic cliff itself. Halda.AI predicts that the supply of names available for marketing by colleges and universities will fall precipitously over the next several years." Doing things the same way isn't a path forward - and the dramatic increase in digital marketing costs isn't sustainable for many colleges. Thought this was great perspective - "In the traditional higher ed numbers game, it’s understood that a high percentage of traffic and leads will fall through the cracks. In this new normal, where the student pool is smaller and every pageview is earned, creating anything less than a first-class experience will leave schools unable to compete. Thanks to the tireless efforts of advocates and educators, the President's 2025 budget expands free, high-quality early learning options that are crucial for lifelong success. Reliable, high-quality, and affordable child care enables parents to secure their finances, advance their careers, and maintain consistent employment. Meanwhile, children enjoy the advantages of early childhood programs that foster healthy development and offer valuable social interactions with peers.
