As of May 10th, FAFSA completions for high school students remain 17.2% below last year's numbers. However, this metric alone fails to capture the complexity of the situation. --> Students from lower-income districts exhibit a larger completion gap of 20.1% in comparison to higher-income districts, with a similar difference observed between high-minority and low-minority districts. --> It's important to note that these figures only apply to high school students aged 19 or younger submitting the FAFSA for the first time. We lack information about rates for people who are not in high school. Working adults 25 and older make up nearly 40% of the learners attending college. --> Rates vary significantly within and between states, ranging from a high of 25% below last year for Mississippi to a low of 3.8% below last year for Indiana. --> There are also variations between different counties or regions and different types of schools within states. What's clear is that these figures will have a significant impact on enrollment.

The continuing errors and FAFSA delays create a unique opportunity for Community Colleges. Students are considering whether to commit to a university with no clear idea of tuition or delay enrollment for a semester until FAFSA is sorted out. Why not be the affordable alternative? We have the playbook helping several community colleges recruit students considering four-year universities as a local affordable alternative for the upcoming semesters. Curious to learn more? I have some interesting and unexpected data to share about 4-year college enrollment nationally and projections going forward....and some questions that follow. 1. The Fall 2022 freshman class attending 4-year institutions was the largest ever (freshman to me is: first-time degree seeking students). See data here: https://lnkd.in/gV7pbcZ6 2. The Fall 2023 freshman class was probably even larger (another record) given that 2023 high school student FAFSA completions were almost 5% higher in 2023 relative to 2022. See data here: https://lnkd.in/ghsSeg2m 3. The US department of ed is projecting stable freshman classes for all of higher ed out to 2031. Projecting 2.8 million in 2031 and last actual read in 2022 was 2.7 million. See data here again: https://lnkd.in/gV7pbcZ6 Ok now I have questions maybe people in my network can answer: a. why does it seem like so many 4-year colleges are closing while year after year their aggregate freshman classes are getting larger and reaching new highs? Is there a shift in relative demand for certain types of schools? Something else happening? b. when is the so called demographic cliff coming? Or is that not going to happen until after 2031?
