I'm very pleased to share that I have started my Ph.D. in Public Policy at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, as a President's Graduate Fellow :) My work at BEAST, and teaching engagements have reaffirmed my belief in the potential we have as individuals in making a real-world impact. By completing my Doctoral studies, I hope to contribute even more extensively to our shared academic knowledge, educate the next generation of policy and organizational leaders, and help bridge the academic-practitioner gap, so that we have the best tools and evidence at our disposal to tackle our most important challenges. Saturday morning PhD thoughts…. If one was to compare the statistics from April 2012 and April 2022, one might be tempted to assume that, despite ongoing training, education, and learning as well as the implementation of NatSSIPs, there hasn’t been a discernible decline in the reported figures. It is reasonable to hypothesise that in addition to incorporating human factors and civility into the day-to-day operational workload, the emerging ‘Golden Threads’ of dissident staff attitudes, leadership, and culture must be addressed as a top priority.

Qualitative data were examined to determine connections among participants with regard to literature reviewed and research questions. Analyses checked for evidence of culturally responsive leadership practice and the use of critical race theory. Findings: Nine common leadership characteristics were identified. Any leader can choose to use a critical race theory lens when practicing leadership for social justice and equity in diverse settings. Conclusions: These findings suggest the need for alternative models of leadership as a response to diversity in schools and universities, and value in exploring connections between multicultural education and educational leadership.

I'm glad to see my article in Discourse (@DiscourseofEd) titled, "Narrative, zombie academic leadership, and the contemporary university", is now "in print" (vol. 44, no. 6). This article has elicited quite an emotive type response from a diverse array of people. Interestingly, I continue to get unsolicited emails from people about this article who feel like they have to tell me something and/or share something from their own experiences in higher education. Clearly, this article hits a raw nerve for some, and yet, I wonder whether my central thesis is being taken seriously. Crises of the #postpandemic era will be greater, more complicated, and more intersectional than ever before. #Highered leaders will require new thinking, new skill sets, and new strategies to effectively tackle future crises. This article explores strategies for effective higher education #leadership in five key areas: (1) reaffirming and reframing #governance for efficiency, action, and agility; (2) rethinking #financial models; (3) building institutional #resilience; (4) accelerating toward #opportunity; and (5) paying closer attention to #publicopinion. Challenges to institutions and demands on their leaders—including trustees, faculty senators, presidents, provosts, and other senior administrators—will be greater, more complicated, and more intersectional.
