Over the last several weeks I've been fortunate to be included in discussions organized by Jeff Doyle as part of a class he is offering on the Future of Higher Education. This week we were looking at predictions/trends in higher education. Based on the readings and discussion, here is a little more detail on the second hot topics/trend that I feel will be front and center for the 24-25 academic year. Would love to hear thoughts from others: 2) Continued Discussion and Focus on ROI, Financial Value Transparency (FVT), and Employer Outcomes Data for 4-Year Programs Students and parents are increasingly scrutinizing the financial value and outcomes of 4-year programs. The focus on ROI and FVT, along with detailed employer outcomes data, is critical in guiding decisions. Some colleges are putting renewed focus on career preparation and career aligned majors and others are even offering employment guarantees. The new Financial Value Transparency Rules for Higher Ed is part of the push for more accountability and stronger ROI at 4-year institutions. Institutions owe it to their students to clearly demonstrate the ROI of attending their institution regardless of the chosen major. #HIGHERED MYTH No. 376: More programs = higher #enrollment My inbox had a story today about an institution looking to cut a substantial number of programs despite being fiscally sound (for now) because they want to drive future enrollment growth. Sounds counter-intuitive, right? Actually, it's the right move. Every year, we at UQ Solutions research the right number of programs for enrollment growth. And yes, there is a 'too many programs to sustain growth' threshold for each institution. Our analysis shows there is a direct link to having too many academic programs and enrollment declines. Have too many programs and an institution can soon lose focus. There are simply too many programs to promote and sustain to make them all viable. The formula for growth is offering the right programs to the right student segments in the right modality. And although executing that strategy is easier said than done, identifying the correct program mix is straightforward with the right tools. How many programs are too many programs for your institution? Which programs should you be offering in your markets and which ones should you consider sunsetting? Employers/recruiters! If I could give you one piece of broad feedback, this would be it: By and large, you need to more intentionally set accurate expectations. If your process takes forever, including if a student should expect to wait a long time to hear back on an application or after an interview... Like Genie's advice to Aladdin... Tell. Them. The. TRUUUUUUUTH! Students (and job seekers in general, of course) are always going to be sad if they don't get a job or internship they were excited about. But it's not usually going to become a bigger employer branding issue as long as what they experienced was consistent with what you communicated. If they see consistency between your process and your words, they might even still sing your praises to other potential candidates even if they're disappointed in the outcome. I've talked with so many students recently who feel defeated, in part because they either haven't known what to expect in these processes at all, or the expectations a company set weren't met. One I spoke with this morning said she was told she'd hear either a yes or a no by last Monday (a week ago). Nothing. She followed up on Wednesday. Nothing. There's nothing wrong with that length of time to get word to a job seeker (though of course I'll always wish for quicker turnaround times). But EVERYTHING is wrong with setting a much higher expectation than you're actually capable of fulfilling. Don't let your company be the one students complain to each other about because they feel like they were sold a false bill of goods. #careerdevelopment #jobhunt #expectations #recruiting

Would love to hear thoughts from others: 4️. Redefining How We Determine and Award Credit for Learning Innovations in awarding credit for learning are redefining higher education. The fairly recently established Carnegie Post-Secondary Commission is at the forefront, examining how to create scalable, affordable, and career-aligned pathways for all but particularly for low-income, underrepresented, and first-generation students..
