Australia is facing a literacy crisis as our literacy rates continue to decline. According to a study conducted by Deakin University, almost a third (29%) of students aged 11 - 18 barely read outside of school work. This disconnection from reading at an early age has serious implications. It's not only books that are being shunned, but online content like blog posts, newspapers, magazines, or comics are also showing little to no engagement. But there is a solution. Whole school reading programs can combat this problem in our schools. These programs must be designed uniquely for individual school settings and include dedicated time on the timetable, staff reading alongside students as role models, parent support, appealing library spaces with dedicated spaces to read, qualified library staff, and strong library budgets. Let's work together to turn the page on this literacy crisis. Every book counts, and schools need quality libraries with role models who read. #everybookcounts #turnthepage #wholeschoolreading #schoolsneedqualitylibraries #rolemodelsread
