During #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, it's essential to shed light on the complex factors contributing to the current state of Black maternal health in the U.S. A recent issue brief by the National Partnership for Women and Families examines the interplay of systemic racism, discrimination in healthcare, and economic inequities that lead to disparate maternal health outcomes for Black women. Economic inequities, in particular, have a significant impact on Black maternal health. Studies show that Black women face wealth and income gaps, which can negatively affect their health outcomes. They also report that adults in communities of color, especially Black adults, are more likely to have medical debt reported to collections. Rivia Health recognizes the importance of addressing economic barriers to maternal healthcare. We ensure women have access to zero-interest, credit-risk-free financing, preventing them from being sent to collections or resorting to financing healthcare payments with credit card debt. Our platform makes it easier for patients to become aware of, understand, manage, and pay their bills, empowering them to take control of their financial health during this critical time. Through our work, Rivia Health aims to reduce disparities in maternal health outcomes for Black women by addressing the economic challenges they face. We believe that all mothers deserve access to quality healthcare without compromising their financial stability. Belonging and connectedness to the local place and community are important components of adolescents’ protective health assets. According to #HBSCEngland data, opportunities to protect #adolescent #health and buffer against risk were lower in 2022 than in previous survey rounds: https://lnkd.in/eZmxyc4x    Key messages:    🏘 Around 2 in 5 of those #adolescents surveyed reported high neighbourhood sense of belonging (NSB)  🏘 Our trend data shows adolescents’ sense of #neighbourhood belonging in overall decline between 2014 and 2022  🏘 Adolescents from high affluence families were twice as likely to report high NSB compared with those from low affluence families

In a scorecard recently released by the Commonwealth Fund, Michigan placed 29th among 39 states examined in overall health care delivered to Black residents. Michigan also had “worse than average” health system performance for white residents compared with other states, with Black residents experiencing the poorest outcomes, This also applies to the health of women, mothers and babies, with high and increasing rates of maternal and infant mortality and inequities in pregnancy-related outcomes for Black and American Indian/Alaska Native women. Mortality increased during the pandemic. SEMPQIC's Detroit Health Equity Education Resource (DHEER) was created as to source and house health equity information and actionable tools to support personal transformation and equip organizational capacity building needed to advance health equity and improve outcomes in the perinatal care system. Developed specifically Black and Brown women and families who are at high-risk for experiencing maternal and infant mortality in Detroit and southeast Michigan. Currently, non-Latinx Black women in Chicago are 4 times more likely to experience pregnancy-related mortality than non-Latinx white women, and nearly 90% of those deaths were preventable.
