Wishing everyone a Happy 4th of July!

Over the weekend, I had the honor of being a part of the opening ceremonies for the 2024 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games! This year's games featured over 700 incredibly talented athletes, supported by hundreds of dedicated and passionate coaches and volunteers who mentor and push these competitors to be their best selves. With a great crowd in attendance, this night, along with the games themselves, was a special moment for everyone. #specialolympics #santaclaracounty

At the May 21 Board of Supervisors meeting, we had a chamber filled with community members eager to express their viewpoints regarding the use of TASERs by our Sheriff's Department. The first of these speakers came prepared with a large binder labeled "TASERS KILL" and "BAN TASERS." The speaker was Richard Konda, the Executive Director of the Asian Law Alliance. Richard has spent a portion of his legal career studying the interactions between law enforcement equipped with TASERs and those who are at the receiving end of the electric rifle. Richard and I dive into concerns and some history regarding TASERs on my latest episode of And Just One More Thing. In yesterday's Grant’s Pass decision, the Court doesn’t offer solutions to our deep shortage of affordable housing, but nonetheless makes clear that local jurisdictions may evade responsibility for addressing root causes of homelessness by sweeping people into jail. We solve homelessness when we provide access to housing people can afford and services they need to become healthy and stable. While the high court’s decision clarifies that local control is permissible in deciding how to address people who are living in encampments or otherwise unsheltered on our streets, it in no way requires municipalities to adopt or enforce ordinances that effectively criminalize homelessness, even if the ordinances nominally apply to any campers or outdoor sleepers. I hope the elected leaders in our community behave as the good actors I believe them to be and continue to focus on finding real solutions to homelessness rather than pointing to this decision as license simply to sweep people out of sight. #Oregon #GrantsPass #OregonVJohnson #homeless #supremecourt #homelessness

As we close off our fiscal year and move past the myriads of budget meetings, there are a few thoughts and words of direction that I wish to share regarding the road ahead for our county. This weekend Community Seva Inc. celebrated its 11th anniversary and the grand opening of its Central Kitchen. This organization has grown into a community of over 2,900 volunteers that share a passion for service. With the addition of a new kitchen the possibilities for what Community SEVA can achieve and provide to our community continue to grow. Thank you for all the handwork! #community #santaclaracounty
