    In 1991, Bernadine Healy, MD, became the first woman to lead the NIH. Before her appointment, she was the chair of the Research Institute at Cleveland Clinic. While she was here, she led a groundbreaking study comparing angioplasty with coronary artery bypass surgery. She also led a large research program on hypertension and advocated for women to be included cardiac research.
