What an amazing week it has been already and it's only Wednesday! On Monday and Tuesday our City of West Des Moines Community & Economic Development staff and the Greater Des Moines Partnership teamed up once again to host Site Selectors Guild members Courtney Dunbar, CEcD, EDFP, AICP and John Longshore to our city! Known as a Community Familiarization Tour, this opportunity aimed at giving these site selector professionals a comprehensive understanding of our community's attributes, resources, and business environment. During their visit, our guests took an aerial tour of the Des Moines metro via helicopter, participated in a panel discussion at the DSM Economic Practitioners meeting, saw potential development sites in WDM, and met with several business leaders, elected officials, and the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce to explore emerging trends and best practices in economic development. Thank you, Courtney and John for the opportunity to host your visit to West Des Moines! One key takeaway for me was the need to continue our efforts in attracting more young professionals to West Des Moines and the greater Des Moines area. As these YP's become the largest cohort in the labor market, their presence will be a key necessity for future development opportunities. In my experience, having lived on the Texas Gulf Coast, in suburban Kansas City, in small town rural Iowa, and now suburban Des Moines, I hope my story can continue to reach other young professionals who want to live in a metro area that has amazing recreational amenities, low cost of living, affordable (and a variety of) housing options, great schools, less traffic, and a whole lot more! #WestDesMoines #Iowa #economicdevelopment
🚧 City Improvement Projects Update! 🚧 A small section of South 51st Street, north of Mills Civic Parkway, between the Hy-Vee entrances, is currently closed to perform a substantial amount of patching on the road within a short period. Most work will occur during the daytime hours with some work taking place on the weekends, and it is anticipated to last 2-3 weeks. While this is a small section of road, it is a high-traffic area, so please be alert and follow construction signs if you are visiting this area. The West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department seeks an impassioned and skilled Recreation Program/Facility Supervisor to spearhead the development and execution of outstanding community recreation programs and facility management. Reporting to the Superintendent of Recreation, the Supervisor's key responsibilities will include: - Planning, organizing, and overseeing all facets of recreation programs - Managing the day-to-day operations of one or more facilities - Handling administrative duties - Prioritizing customer service and community engagement - Developing and implementing policies, managing human resources, and performing other assigned tasks The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in a recreation-related field and at least 3 years of professional experience in event planning, recreation programming, or leisure services management.
