City officials, members of the Long family, and the Valley Junction neighborhood gathered for the official unveiling of the Johnny E. Long, Jr. and Barbara Long Honorary Roadway sign posted on Maple Street between First Street and 14th Street in Valley Junction. The Longs are the first residents to receive a historic honorary street designation in West Des Moines. Johnny Edward Long, Jr. (1933 – 2010) and Barbara Jean Long (1931 – 2021) both spent the majority of their lives in Valley Junction and were instrumental in the creation of the Eddie Davis Community Center. They served as community advocates to improve the area and ensure all residents received needed resources and services. The event was led by Audrey Kennis, Director of DEI for the City of West Des Moines, and included remarks from Mayor Pro Tem Matt McKinney; Councilmember At-Large Renee Hardman; and the Long’s daughter, Dr. Vicky Long Hill. Following remarks was the official unveiling of the “Johnny E. Long, Jr. and Barbara Long” Honorary Roadway sign. Other City News: https://lnkd.in/gtr_gTRS
