NEW DELHI: Five Congress workers who were arrested in rioting case on July 2 were sent to judicial custody hours before Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to meet them in Gujarat.
"Even if Rahul Gandhi is not able to meet the jailed party workers, he will surely meet their family members," Congress MLA Imran Khedawala told reporters.
He mentioned that despite their remand was scheduled to end at 4pm, the police brought the five party workers to court in the morning.
He added that the party's legal team had requested permission for Rahul to meet these workers at Sabarmati central jail, but due to the short notice, it's unlikely to be approved promptly.
The workers were arrested following a clash between Congress and BJP supporters outside Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, the opposition party's headquarters, during a demonstration BJP members protesting Rahul Gandhi's comments in the Lok Sabha regarding Hindus.
Both groups engaged in stone pelting, resulting in injuries to five police personnel, including an assistant commissioner of police.
Nearly 450 workers of the Congress and BJP were named in FIR.
Rahul Gandhi addressed the party workers and later he is scheduled to visit the kin of those affected by recent tragedies in Gujarat.
