Heavy rain continues in S Gujarat, sea turns rough
Surat: Heavy rain continued in the south Gujarat region on Friday with Umarpada in Surat district recording the highest 117 mm rain. Vansda in Navsari received 112 mm of rain while Kamrej in Surat recorded 100 mm.
Due to heavy rain in rural areas of the district, the water in Tapi river was overflowing from causeways and traffic movement on it was suspended. Surat city recorded 55 mm of rain which resulted in temporary waterlogging in many parts of the city.
Meanwhile, residents from different areas complained of damaged roads and no waste collection.
On Friday, Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) health department team surveyed open plots in the city and found accumulation of water in 1,938 plots. It was found that there was no arrangement of draining water from the plots. Water accumulation leads to mosquito breeding. About 113 persons responsible for managing the open plots were issued notices and a total spot fine of Rs 1.18 lakh was collected.
The sea turned rough in Valsad’s Tithal and Daman with high tide and heavy rain.
Cops were deployed at Tithal Beach to ensure that people did not go near the water. Police tied a rope to prevent people from going on the beach while the seawater reached the road. Locals joined police in restricting visitors from going near the beach.
In Daman, the administration has issued prohibitory orders entering sea. However, a video of a woman trying to get photos clicked on the beach surfaced on Friday. The waves at Daman reached as high as 20 feet above the promenade.
