Beware car owners with white LED lights using high beam! 8,000+ challans issued in one week: Details
Karnataka Police has launched a state-wide crackdown against vehicles using high beam LED headlights. The state police has so far issued over 8,000 challans in just a week, with over 3,000 cases coming from the Bangalore City alone. Next up, in the list of cities with highest challans comes Mysore City with 381 cases, significantly lower than the former.
High beam white LED lights: Why is it prohibited
High beam LED lights are dangerous on roads in India because they are very bright and can temporarily blind other drivers.
When an oncoming driver is suddenly exposed to these bright lights, they may not be able to see the road clearly for a few seconds. This can cause them to miss seeing obstacles, pedestrians, or other vehicles, leading to accidents.
Additionally, high beam lights can create glare on wet roads or reflective surfaces, making it even harder for drivers to see properly. In a country like India, where roads can be busy and conditions unpredictable, this added risk can significantly increase the chances of accidents.

Ideal usage of headlights
For most driving situations, low beams offer ample enough illumination without compromising the vision and safety of the oncoming drivers. You should only opt for high beams only when the road is very dark and open, where there’s minimal or no oncoming traffic. Use low beams during night driving, in fog, rain, or snow, and in city driving where street lights provide additional illumination.
High beam headlights are useful for rural or poorly lit roads, but they should be switched to low beams when other vehicles are approaching to avoid causing glare. However, it should be noted that getting your cars equipped with high intensity aftermarket headlights should be avoided as it is a punishable offence and can result in fines.
