🌳 Forests are one of our best #NaturalClimateSolutions for combating increasing global temperatures. A study from researchers at the University of Virginia and Woodwell Climate Research Center found that protecting tropical forests could prevent more than 1 degree Celsius of atmospheric warming. It’s the last week to visit Woodwell Climate’s inaugural exhibition "In Flux: Perspectives on Arctic Change" at Highfield Hall and Gardens - on display until July 14. The exhibit’s goal is to connect a distant community to the reality of Arctic change. Many may never visit the Arctic, or study it like Woodwell Climate researchers do. Art can help communicate the reality of an unfamiliar place. Read how the collaborative exhibit came to be and find more information about visiting at https://lnkd.in/ePs_wpKy (📸 : Kaeli Bennett)

🗺️ It was an absolute privilege and highlight of my life to work on our first #PermafrostPathways StoryMap covering how my wonderful teammates and friends Gary Evon and Greg Fiske co-produced a map that illustrates extreme tidal flooding in the Alaska Native Village of Kuigilnguq. I'm so grateful to know them both and feel so lucky to work with such wonderful humans contributing to meaningful work in Alaska. Thank you, Gary, Greg, and Sue Natali for letting me be part of this project and for the opportunity to help elevate this important work ✊🏻 📈 Accurate representations of environmental hazards in maps and other geospatial tools are important for community disaster planning and response—preparation that is especially critical in a region where many communities aren’t connected to a road system and are only accessible by plane or barge. 🤝 Gary and Greg's flood map is an example of co-produced knowledge, which is ✨essential✨ for providing decision-makers with the best available science to ensure that government programs can appropriately meet adaptation needs and avoid the risk of under-serving communities on the frontlines of climate change. https://lnkd.in/eZnmPrQB #YouAreOnNativeLand #IndigenousKnowledge #Alaska #AlaskaNative #IndigenousExpertise #Yupik #CoProduction #PermafrostThaw #Permafrost #Flooding #Erosion #ArcticWarming #ClimateChange #ClimateAdaptation #Mapping #GIS #Cartography #IndigenizeTheMap

The surprising champion of Amazon reforestation is 8 ft long, 700 lbs, and a big fans of seeds. The lowland tapir is the largest, native, terrestrial mammal in the Amazon - and it might be the cheapest and easiest solution for large-scale forest restoration. Lowland tapirs can restore degraded Amazonian forests by traveling through and spreading tree seeds in areas that had been previously burned. Despite their ability to restore habitat, their population is dwindling due to deforestation and hunting. To learn more, watch Woodwell Climate’s Dr. Ludmila Rattis' TED Talk on tapirs at https://lnkd.in/e_MfY2N6 TED Conferences #TedCountdown #TedTalk #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateSolutions #Deforestation #AmazonRainforest #Brazil #Ecology

Hurricane Beryl is the earliest Category 5 storm ever to form in the Atlantic. Woodwell Climate’s Dr. Jennifer Francis said record sea surface temperatures due to climate change foretold an explosive hurricane season. “Hurricane Beryl is feeding off of incredibly warm water in the North Atlantic,” she said. “The ocean temperatures in the development region are about what we'd usually see in September during peak hurricane season.“ Check out this animated map by Greg Fiske. #HurricaneBeryl #HurricaneSeason #ClimateChange

"I am a woman that lives for adventure, mud, and heat. The Caribbean sunshine, warmth, and humidity of my island, Boriké, hug me every single day. That's why many people find it strange that in the summer of 2022 I ended up on the other side of the world from my Caribbean Island home, willingly experiencing freezing temperatures.” ❄️ Read how Polaris Student, Esmeralda Torres Martínez, embraced her love of Arctic fieldwork https://lnkd.in/eCBNsdRK
