Woodwell Climate Research Center’s Post

The surprising champion of Amazon reforestation is 8 ft long, 700 lbs, and a big fans of seeds. The lowland tapir is the largest, native, terrestrial mammal in the Amazon - and it might be the cheapest and easiest solution for large-scale forest restoration. Lowland tapirs can restore degraded Amazonian forests by traveling through and spreading tree seeds in areas that had been previously burned. Despite their ability to restore habitat, their population is dwindling due to deforestation and hunting.
