关于我们

East Asia is undergoing a period of rapid transformation and has become a center of gravity for trade and investment, demography, climate change and security challenges. For the German government, the “policy guidelines on the Indo-Pacific region” outline the framework for cooperation in the broader region. They reflect an appreciation that engagement with the topics, institutions and people of East Asia is key to shaping the international order of the 21st century. For Germany, China is at the same time a partner, competitor and a systemic rival. As a federally owned company, GIZ supports the German government implement effective solutions for sustainable development. As an engine for a future worth living, our work serves both planet and people. With offices in China and Mongolia, GIZ draws on over 40 years of regional experience and on access to key political, economic and civil society stakeholders to offer tailor-made services. In East Asia, our work centers on 5 areas: • Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Biodiversity • Industry and Trade • Law and the Rule of Law • Sustainable Economic Development and Education • China’s Overseas Engagement Through technical cooperation and dialogue facilitation we help tackle one of the biggest global challenges: to implement effective solutions against climate change and environmental degradation. Through bilateral projects, including on digitization, standardization, mobility, and energy, GIZ advances Germany’s stake in the region’s sustainable economic development, and in fair rules on trade and investment. Both in China and Mongolia, legal cooperation projects strengthen rule of law standards. Finally, GIZ supports cooperation with China as a donor country through dialogue on donor principles and joint development projects in the Global South. ✍ Exciting news! During the China visit of Robert Habeck, Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, in June 2024, representatives from GIZ and the National Energy Conservation Center signed a Letter of Intent to improve Sino-German cooperation on energy efficiency in key industries. 🌱 This letter is part of a high-level dialogue and cooperation mechanism between Germany and China on climate change and green transition, which was agreed upon in 2023. Both countries decided to intensify their cooperation in the areas of climate, energy, green mobility, environment, and circular economy. 🏗 Specific cooperation projects are the bedrock of such a political agreement. The recently signed Letter of Intent, with a focus on climate and energy, is an important step in establishing a solid foundation for future dialogues and cooperation. 🤝 Germany and China will be working together to find faster ways to reduce CO2 emissions in the cement sector. Germany´s valuable experience in this area can benefit the fight against rising CO2 emission, because globally concrete manufacturing is responsible for 8% of carbon emissions. With this Letter of Intent Germany and China agree on pilot projects that chart a pathway for carbon neutrality in the cement sector. 🌏 Global challenges need cooperation. Let's work together towards a future worth living for! #GermanyChinaCooperation #Cement #ClimateAction #EnergyEfficiency #CircularEconomy #GIZ #NECC

🎓 Last Thursday at the Tsinghua University Institute for Carbon Neutrality (ICON), Jennifer Morgan gave a passionate call to action: the climate crisis is a collective challenge we can only solve together! In her address to the students, the German Special Envoy for International Climate Action highlighted that "we need platforms like this to exchange lessons learned and discuss our joint path forward. Engaging with the next generation is crucial –it's your future at stake. No country can tackle the climate crisis alone, but every country will feel its impact". Her message underscores the urgency of collaborative global efforts and the vital role of youth in driving sustainable solutions. 🌱 The launch of the NextGen Climate Dialogues series follows German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's visit to China and highlights the vital role of Sino-German academic collaboration in addressing global climate issues. GIZ’s Climate Partnership project is proud to help drive this initiative, organizing student exchanges and high-level discussions to engage youth in climate solutions. 👉 https://lnkd.in/geegJQ95   ⛰ Last month, professor Dirk Messner, president of the Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency and our kick-off speaker of the Dialogues series at Tongji University in Shanghai spurred lively discussions on the climate-biodiversity nexus, stressing the need for systemic change and nature-based solutions. The interactive session saw enthusiastic student participation, discussing South-South cooperation, ethical climate issues, and energy security.   👩🎓 This autumn, the Climate Partnership will support 20 German students to head to Tsinghua University, and in 2025, 20 Chinese students will visit the Technische Universität München (Technical University of Munich). These exchanges are key to fostering resilient academic networks and addressing pressing global issues.   For more details on Sino-German academic networks, scholarships, and opportunities, check out the BMBF website. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gp84qJxB   🌏 The climate crisis demands collective action, and engaging the next generation is essential. 🌍 Celebrating International SME Day 2024 in Mongolia! 🎉 On June 27, the world comes together to honor Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) and their pivotal role in driving sustainable development and global economic growth. This year, the Government of Mongolia celebrated International MSME Day with a week-long series of events from June 11-16, turning the spotlight on the incredible contributions of SMEs across the country. 📅 As a proud co-organizer, the GIZ Improved Conditions for Economic Diversification (ICED) project joined forces with the Ulaanbaatar SME Support Center to bring these events to life. A highlight of the celebration was the grand exhibition at the main square, where over 400 SMEs and cooperatives from Ulaanbaatar and 21 provinces showcased their products. The vibrant marketplace, featuring 120 tents and 14 traditional gers, created a dynamic space for businesses to connect with customers and peers. 💡 The event was not just a showcase but a thriving hub of commerce and innovation. Over the five days, participating SMEs generated a remarkable sales income of more than 500 million MNT, underscoring the critical role they play in Mongolia’s economic landscape. ✨ International MSME Day is more than a celebration; it's a platform for sharing knowledge, fostering networking, and recognizing the entrepreneurial spirit that fuels growth and development. This year’s festivities in Mongolia have reaffirmed our commitment to supporting SMEs as key drivers of economic resilience and sustainable development. 🌱💲 Climate Finance & Urban Transition: A future Game Changer!? Read Sino-German Joint Studies on Transition Finance to learn more! 💡 Did you know that investment in urban low-carbon infrastructure could reduce emissions by 89% by 2050 in China, generate a net present value return of more than 50 trillion RMB, and create 10.2 million jobs? 💼 In May 2024 the CIFA Subforum on Climate Finance and Investment for Accelerating Urban Transition took place in Beijing, co-hosted by the GIZ, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Climate Investment and Finance Association (CIFA). It was a factory and melting pot of innovative ideas, with over 120 participants from government, financial institutions, academia, and think tanks. 🚀 Here’s just a few of our insights: 🏢Bernhard Müller from the German National Academy of Science and Engineering emphasized the economic opportunities of low-carbon urban transitions. By building clean, compact, and connected cities, China could save up to 1.4 trillion USD and create millions of jobs. 📚 Worried that policymakers need to balance the current costs of action with potential future benefits? What’s needed are robust national urban policies, technical support programs, and information disclosure platforms! 👨👩👧👦 👩👩👦 📈 Amin Mohseni-Cheraghlou from Columbia University highlighted the global trends of booming populations and rapid urbanization. With 75% of the infrastructure needed for 2050 yet to be built, especially in the Global South, non-government funding and public-private partnerships have a crucial role to play. ☀ 🌧️Next, our panel discussion zoomed in on financial product innovation and market development trends. One example: He Simiao from AXA Climate explained the advantages of weather index insurance. This innovative approach has already greatly benefitted city disaster relief efforts. 📘 The event also saw the launch of the “Sino-German Joint Studies on Transition Finance”. This joint research project contributes to the development of a common definition of transition finance under the G20 framework.
