Should the German dual vocational training system be transferred to other countries? The German dual vocational training system with its combination of classroom and practice, learning and working, is recognised worldwide as a fundamental and highly effective model for vocational training. But its transfer to other countries is much debated. In this regard, the paper “Actors and factors in the international transfer of dual training approaches: The coordination of vocational education and training in Mexico from a German perspective” by WiSo professors Dr Martina Fuchs and Dr Matthias Pilz as well as Beke Vogelsang and Natascha Röhrer focuses on the reform of the Mexican vocational education system. The paper identifies challenges and opportunities for actors from German-speaking countries in the context of the Mexican education reform. The findings reveal a mix of factors influencing the educational transfer process in Mexico, with both positive and negative effects. Examples include compatibility with local characteristics, cooperation and complex coordination. The study highlights the importance of setting common goals and adapting to local conditions for the successful implementation of vocational education reforms. Decision-making processes require the involvement of local actors and consideration of bottom-up approaches. In addition, securing key resources such as highly qualified personnel and appropriate facilities is crucial for effective implementation. Motivating companies to engage in dual practices and promoting cooperation through networks must be key strategies for implementing a dual training system. Despite the challenges they face, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential for offering dual vocational training in Mexico. The findings provide valuable insights for the transfer and implementation of dual vocational training models worldwide and emphasise the importance of considering the perspectives of both the donor and recipient countries. ⚙ Vocational Education alert! ⚙ Yes, it is still underestimated in many parts of the world. ⚙ I remember how being in high school many teachers used to intimidate underachieving students with phrases like: "Vocational college is crying for you!", "You can only go to a vocational school, you are useless"! This was perhaps the most humiliating thing of all, it actually meant that you had failed. But today, we are witnessing a return to vocational education being prioritised. Of course, there are countries where vocational education is "ahead of the curve": Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, China and some others. Partnerships with industry and responsive governance informs programming. Vocational tracks there are respected, not stigmatized. I really want your opinion on the vocational education system. Yes, I'm dealing with the system in New Zealand but the same question applies in any country. 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 (or needs to be), 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲? That was, ostensibly, a topic of discussion I was part of yesterday in a room of intelligent, experienced and passionate people from a range of industries. If we go with the assumption that industry knows best what it requires and the direction it needs to head, does it therefore suggest that the way to achieve an efficient, effective, and world class vocational education system that is fit for purpose, is to remove the government from it altogether? I'm truly curious about your thoughts - 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝? In a simple form - set in place a requirement for governmental support of 𝓍, no matter what shade or hue of politics is in place at the time, and leave the rest to industry. What are your thoughts?
