👏 #GIZThailand welcomes new country director Timo Menniken 🎉 GIZ Thailand is delighted to announce that Timo Menniken has started work as our new country director, effective July 2024, and will be leading our continuous mission to shape a future worth living. Timo holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Freiburg, Germany, with a key focus on Asia. Prior to joining GIZ Thailand, Timo familiarised himself with the region while working in Laos for the Mekong River Commission from 2006 to 2010. During this time, he developed a deeper interest and expertise in natural resources, climate, and biodiversity. With almost 20 years of experience with GIZ, Timo has worked in Belgrade, Serbia; Brussels, Belgium; and Germany, where he was appointed Director General. In 2020, he joined the Corporate Development Department in the same position to strengthen GIZ’s internal strategy and policy, before being appointed as Director General of Digital Transformation and IT Solutions in 2021. Timo is known for his strategic and innovative vision, keen team management and strengthening collaboration in sustainable development, as well as his adaptability to the digital realm, which will be a great driving force for GIZ Thailand’s ongoing and upcoming endeavours to support Thailand in several areas, especially in green transformation. "I am really thrilled to join GIZ Thailand and to work with all of you. This feels like a homecoming for me, both in terms of the place and the thematic area. My heart is beating strongly for green transformation, which is the major issue we are working on here. Thailand is ready to further embark on the process, and it is our role to shape it to ensure the best possible impact for the people. I am here, and GIZ is here, to support your visions, missions, and goals. Let’s get started together, let’s work together and let’s make every day count," said Timo. In addition to his role in Thailand, Timo is also regional director for Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore and Sri Lanka. GIZ Thailand’s previous country director, Reinhold Elges, who served since 2020 and played a vital role in driving forward various successful initiatives, took up his new position as Director of the GIZ Brussels Representation in Belgium in April 2024. This second MoU aims to strengthen the existing cooperation framework between EPPO and GIZ Thailand under the project Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE). It focuses particularly on leveraging international experiences to develop policy recommendations for long-term energy planning, as well as training and capacity building for EPPO staff. . 🤝 Dr Timo Menniken, Country Director for #GIZThailand, along with Dr Angkana Chalermpong, Programme Director for Climate, Coastal and Marine Biodiversity (CCMB) at GIZ Thailand, paid a courtesy visit to Dr Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), on the occasion of Timo’s inauguration. . 🌍 During the meeting, both sides discussed the excellent cooperation between Thailand and Germany in the past and areas for future cooperation. 🌱 King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), in collaboration with GIZ under the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility, and Climate (TGC EMC) – #Biomass Component, organised a one-day visit to the Advanced Fuel Processing Laboratory (AFPL) – Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) at KMUTT Bangkhuntien Campus on 28 May 2024. . 🚜 TGC EMC Biomass Component is exploring decentralised pelletisation, which could lower transportation costs, enhance storage capabilities, and improve accessibility for local farmers in the pilot area of Nakhon Sawan province. Studies have shown that pelletisation – when compared to the usual practices of straw baling - can offer significant benefits for farmers by reducing storage costs by about 80%, increasing the economically feasible transport distance for rice straw products by over 300%, and providing a promising alternative for farmers to avoid the practice of open burning. . 🔍 The visit allowed participants to explore practical applications of these technologies for the benefit of Thai farmers. [ภาษาไทยด้านล่าง] 🌱 GIZ and Pollution Control Department (PCD) organised training on the new version of Green Procurement database for system administrators and users on 10-11 July 2024 at Software Park Thailand. Participants explored the database prototype and provided valuable feedback for enhancements. The updated version of the website will be officially launched by late 2024. 📊  The Green Procurement database aims to show the list of environmentally friendly products and services, such as those certified by Thai Green Label or Green Leaf, for public procurers as main target group. Moreover, the database offers criteria for green products and services. Relevant organisations can also report their green procurement data into this database, which can calculate estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction for certain products and services. The current version of the website is available in Thai at http://gp.pcd.go.th/. 🖥️ This activity is under the Scaling SCP project. Its objective is to establish climate- and resource-friendly product standards and consumption patterns to contribute to resource conservation and the reduction of GHG emissions, using sustainable public procurement and eco-labelling.
