About us
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Ethiopia on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1964. The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa. It is three times the size of Germany and has a population of around 102 million. Despite average economic growth of 10 percent since 2005, an estimated 30 percent of Ethiopians still live below the poverty line (World Bank). Ethiopia ranks 173rd of 189 countries in UNDP’s 2019 Human Development Index (category: low human development). For decades, the population of the Ethiopian highlands has been affected by increasing food insecurity stemming from high population growth, deforestation, and inappropriate agricultural production methods. The Ethiopian Government has developed an ambitious growth and transformation plan designed to address its objectives in these areas. It aims to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and double the country’s economic output. To accompany the plan, the government has put in place its Homegrown Economic Reform strategy, which focuses on reducing poverty, creating jobs for young people, and promoting economic growth. Germany is supporting this strategy and in November 2019 concluded with Ethiopia what is known as a reform partnership – an in-depth form of development cooperation with reform-minded African partner countries as part of the G20 Compact with Africa initiative. The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn (Germany). 🌟 ❤️A significant signature for the protection of migrants: In May 2024, 33,685 migratory movements were observed in Djibouti (according to IOM), which equals an average of 1,087 per day, with most migrants coming from Ethiopia. Aware of their vulnerability, the Network for Better Migration Management (Réseau Associatif Meilleure Gestion Migratoire, MGM) provides them with essential basic services, including food, housing and healthcare. “Sometimes we simply hand them our mobile phones so that they can call their families and let them know that they are still alive”, reports one of the volunteers. With the support of the Better Migration Management Programme, coordinated by GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti and funded by the European Union and the German Government, 17 civil society organisations in Djibouti joined forces to form the network. 🤝💪 An important milestone has now been reached with the signing of a legal document in the presence of a representative of the judiciary, ensuring the legal recognition of the MGM 🖋️📜. This will strengthen our collective efforts and enable us to provide effective assistance to those in need. #JourneyOfChange #migrationnmanagement #migrantrights #endhumantrafficking

The Response to Survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (RSSGBV) project together with its partner the Ethiopian Psychologists' Association (EPA) recently conducted a Training of Trainers program on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. From June 10-15, 2024, the project brought together 28 frontline workers from Afar, Amhara, Tigray, and Addis Ababa regions. Participants engaged in an intensive 6-day programme led by the international GBV/MHPSS expert Serena Thomas, focusing on psychological techniques, self-care, staff care, and peer supervision. This initiative aligns with RSSGBV's goal of strengthening high-quality, needs-based and survivor-centred SGBV response in Ethiopia. By enhancing local capacity, the project aims to address the complex challenges faced by SGBV survivors and improve access to essential support services. The RSSGBV project, implemented by GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti , continues to work alongside partners like the EPA, Norwegian Church Aid Ethiopia, and Act Church of Sweden (Act CoS) to create lasting change in SGBV response and prevention. The RSSGBV project is implemented on behalf of the German Government. 2nd National Migration Conference in Ethiopia 💬 👏🏾 From reintegration of returnees to youth migration and effective legal remedies for victims of trafficking – the range of this year’s topics reflects the complexity of migration. This is also mirrored in the diversity of the conference’s participants which consist of key actors from ministries, academia, civil society and the international community. H.E. Belayhun Yirga, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Justice, gave the opening remarks. It was highlighted that research has been essential to the success of BMM and other projects alike. Without research, it is challenging to pursue ideas and actions that will truly have an impact. The conference is jointly implemented by the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education — Ethiopia & GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti . The organiser is the Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme, which is implemented on behalf of the European Union and the German Government.
