📢 IOM has presented today recommendations on migration and mobility to the Belgian and Hungarian governments, which will hold the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2024, coinciding with the adoption of the EU's New Pact on Migration and Asylum. IOM encourages the two Presidencies to ensure that the adoption and implementation of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum leads to more predictable, coordinated and humane response across all dimensions of migration and asylum. About us
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Regional Office for the EEA, the European Union and NATO (RO Brussels) was established in September 2011 at a time when the Treaty of Lisbon (2009), European Union (EU) enlargement, and deeper cooperation had reinforced the centrality of migration and asylum policy. In this context, the Regional Office in Brussels set out to advance IOM’s global objectives through strategic partnership with the European Union institutions, EU Member States and other countries in the region such as Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, to promote a migrant-centered, rights-based migration management approach and work with states to respond to migration issues including complex crises, socio-economic challenges, and mixed flow movements. Today, our work is guided by the Regional Strategy for the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom 2020-2024 and IOM's Migration Governance Framework’s (MiGOF) principles and objectives, which aim to facilitate orderly, safe and regular migration and mobility of people through planned and well-managed migration policies. RO Brussels supports policies, programmes and operations that pursue the well-being of migrants and societies through a rights-based approach to the governance of human mobility, to, from and within the region, which is coherent, holistic and balanced. The Regional Office acts as IOM’s liaison and coordination office to the European Union (EU) and NATO and other key Brussels-based stakeholders. We support our 28 IOM Country Offices in the region and IOM Offices worldwide on EU-related policy, programmes, legislation and cooperation and resource management.

"On this journey, no one cares if you live or die." Refugees and migrants endure extreme violence, human rights violations, and exploitation not just at sea, but also on land routes across #Africa towards the #Mediterranean. More people cross the Sahara Desert than the Mediterranean Sea, yet the dangers on these land routes are less documented. Together with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC), IOM outlines the horrors faced by people on the move and the needed protection responses, in this new report. The total number of people forcibly displaced – both within countries and across borders – as a result of persecution, conflict, generalized violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order almost doubled over the past decade. 📈The number of forcibly displaced people has almost doubled in the past decade, soaring from 59.5 million in 2014 to a record 117.3 million by the end of 2023, which equates to 1 in 69 people globally. 🚨This staggering rise shows no signs of slowing down. 🔴Disturbingly, 40% of these individuals are children. As of April 2024, forced displacement is estimated to have surpassed 120 million. Learn more on Forced Migration or Displacement on the Migration Data Portal 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gfh2UAUk

Impacts of climate change, along with floods, fires, and storms worsen environmental degradation. It is one of the largest causes of new displacements around the world. Now more than ever, we need collective action to repair and revive damaged ecosystems to create a climate-resilient future for everyone on the planet. Planet on the Move, a report by IUCN underscores the need for a paradigm shift in global conservation efforts in the face of growing human and other species migration potentially fuelled by climate change, environmental degradation, and conflict. Internal displacement affects millions. Many for years on end. Two years after the adoption of the United Nations Action Agenda on Solutions to Internal Displacement, we’ve made internally displaced people more visible, but we’ve just gotten started. https://www.iom.int/ZU8
