2wIt's an established fact that most migration is determined by "push" rather than "pull" factors, meaning that these migrants and refugees aren't leaving their countries in their droves in the hope of living large off the Welfare State in Europe or whatever the rightwing trope du jour is. No, if they take such tremendous risks it's because staying where they are is even less of an option - you'd want to flee your country to if it was beset by war, famine and other disasters and you were unable to feed your family. Humans have always been capable of both the best and the worst but the widespread heartlessness at the plight of those seeking a better life is cause for despair.
