"Migrant workers play a critical role in Libya's economy by filling gaps in sectors often overlooked by the local workforce, meeting a sustained demand for low-skilled labor," says Thibaut Girault, MMC Regional Research Coordinator for West and North Africa, in this interview on migrant economic realities in #Libya. However, #migrants in Libya face challenges in terms of decent work, living conditions, and exposure to human rights violations. 📝 Our research examining the economic situation of migrants in #Libya shows that economic factors play a crucial role in their decision-making. 🔹77% of our respondents cited economic reasons as a primary reason for leaving their country of origin, interplaying with other factors such as violence, insecurity and conflict (41%), and a prevailing culture of #migration (39%). 🔹More than half of respondents decided to stop in Libya for work to finance their onward journey. 🔹78% of all respondents stated that they selected their intended destination because they anticipated finding better economic opportunities and/or generally experiencing a higher standard of living (65%) there. 🔗 Read our report with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung here:

🌍 Mobility as a resilience strategy or negative coping mechanism? While mobility can enable #migrants to seek new opportunities and improve their conditions, it can also become a negative coping mechanism whereby migrants keep moving onward, further depleting their resources. This new article by Roberto Forin, Giulia Testa & Giulia Bruschi on migrant mobility across #Europe examines why some migrants remain in their initial EU border country of arrival while others move to different European countries. ⬇️ Read the article on the European University Institute Migration Policy Centre Blog. #PRIMEprojectEU

People are losing their lives along land routes through Africa 🌍 "It's hard to get very accurate numbers, but we estimate that actually more people are even losing their lives on some of these land routes as compared to the Mediterranean crossings. And in addition to that most extreme tragedy of people losing their lives, there are many, many stories of torture, rape, sexual violence, physical violence, and kidnapping," said Bram Frouws in an interview on RTP on 12 July 2024. 👉 The report 'On this journey, no one cares if you live or die' (Volume 2) by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, IOM - UN Migration & MMC is available here: https://lnkd.in/esdaYT9s

Many migrants first arrive in EU border countries, like Italy 🇮🇹 Spain 🇪🇸 Croatia 🇭🇷 and Greece 🇬🇷 but then what? ❓Why do some migrants stay in their first country of arrival while others move to other European countries? ❓What are the consequences of mobility for migrants’ experiences? These are questions that the #PRIMEprojectEU is working to shed light on. In this new blog post 📃 researchers Roberto Forin Giulia Bruschi and Giulia Testa from our consortium partner, the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) describe what we know about the mobility trajectories and experiences of newly arrived migrants in EU border countries and how we’ll collect longitudinal data to uniquely expand this limited knowledge base. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗶 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁! Greece is one of the primary entry points to the EU for migrants from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Thessaloniki, the capital of the Region of Central Macedonia in northern Greece, experienced a significant change in its migration landscape after 2015 due to increased refugee arrivals towards Europe. Being at the eastern edge of Europe, Greece serves as a transit country for many migrants and refugees aiming to reach countries further west. In 2021, according to ELSTAT, the migrant population in Greece was 7.3% of the total population while the 2011 census indicated that the foreign population living in the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki was 6.3% of the total population. Like many other cities in Southern Europe, Thessaloniki shares critical elements in its housing condition: the existing housing systems encourage home ownership rather than renting and have a limited public and social housing sector, and in the case of Greece none. This increases the dependence of vulnerable populations, such as people with a migratory background, on the private housing market, and particularly rental, impacting their effective inclusion and integration into the city. At Come HoMe, we have conducted research and collected data to understand the housing access challenges faced by individuals with a migratory background. Our focus has been on their experiences with housing discrimination and identifying other obstacles they encounter when seeking a home.
