A wonderful evening celebrating Victoria’s 2024 Women in Resources with over 100 family, friends and colleagues in Ballarat. Congratulations to Fiona Czuczman at S2 Resources, Felicity Davy at Aginco Eagle, Alicia Tyler at Deepcore Drilling and Shannon Brown at Geological Survey of Victoria. The winners show the diverse range of avenues people can join the mining industry from geology to drilling and community relations to government. This years winners have shown commitment to inspiring the next generation of women into science and creating a welcoming workforce to everyone including the LGBTQI+ community and to First Nation Australians. Australian mining is gradually building a more diverse workforce reflecting the community and challenging gender roles with 20% of the workforce being women - up from 12% in 2001. The Coalition’s nuclear policy, announced today, provides a crucial pathway for Australia’s industries to reduce emissions cost-effectively while maintaining access to reliable baseload power. Building a diverse energy mix that meets both environmental and economic goals is essential for keeping vital industries competitive amidst significant cost pressures and ambitious emissions targets. High future demand for reliable and clean energy means that all energy types, including nuclear power will be indispensable in meeting Australia’s future energy needs. The Australian government needs to take the nuclear option seriously, as the rest of the world is, and lift the ban so Australian families and businesses can enjoy cheap, clean, reliable electricity for decades to come. It is a genuine honour to be recognised for my work mentoring young women in STEM, and advocating for minority groups within the industry. ✨ Anyone who has worked with me in a professional capacity will know that I am extremely passionate about providing high quailty support and data to the Victorian Resources industry. This industry plays a key role in uncovering critical minerals required for the renewable energy transition, and I am committed to ensuring it's growth and success in an environmentally and socially conscious way. 🌿 To me, socially conscious exploration requires building empathetic teams who are aware of and committed to changing the behaviours and attitudes that have historically made resource workplaces unsafe for minority groups. It also requires recognition of the significance of working on Country, and a commitment to genuine, active engagement with Traditional Owner groups. The latest EY Royalty and Company Tax Payments report, commissioned by the Minerals Council of Australia reveals that in 2022-23, the sector contributed $42.5 billion in company tax and a decade-high $31.5 billion in royalties. The minerals sector contributed a total of $74.0 billion to federal, state, and territory governments, an increase of $9.3 billion from the previous year. Over the past decade, the sector has significantly bolstered Australia’s economic growth, with a cumulative $356.6 billion in company tax ($206.2 billion) and royalties ($150.4 billion).
